Crawfordsville Ind Nov 21 The Pettit murder trial ends with a guilty verdict and life imprisonment for the defendant. Pettit broke down in court as jurors, after initial hints of a death verdict, finally chose the life sentence and the defense signaled plans for a new trial.
San Francisco reports Tong Yoong & Co a large Chinese mercantile firm and labor contractor flees to China with forty thousand dollars. That sum represents wages of two hundred forty Chinese fishermen who had just returned from Alaska. Creditors claim twenty thousand more, with total Chinese firm failures this month reaching about two hundred fifty thousand dollars. The fishermen are left penniless after a season’s work.
New York on November 21 reports the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher aged 80 at her home from old age. She was aunt of Joseph Jefferson and sister in law by marriage to Mrs. Clara Fisher Maeder. Fisher first appeared on stage in Philadelphia at Chestnut Street Theater aged 15.
