A powerful cyclone hit South Lawrence and Andover resulting in eight dead and up to twenty seriously injured. 500 people left homeless as 75 to 100 buildings were destroyed or damaged, with losses estimated at over 100000. Rescue efforts, hospital aid, and relief fund drives are underway as authorities deploy guards.

Four inmates at Washington County Jail escaped by sawing the window grate on Saturday night. J. M. Weaver jailed for horse stealing led the escape, with William Jenkins, James Halborn, and Peter Amour. Jenkins and Amour were captured at Hartford, Amour and Jenkins recaptured by Sunday afternoon. Weaver taken at Essex Junction and Halborn at Richmond.
Albert D. Parmenter, a 25 year old farmer, lured his young wife Carrie Luella to an orchard near Zanesfield and shot her in the back before killing himself with a double barreled shotgun. Jealousy of neighbor Eddie McCormick cited as motive. Carrie had prior marriage at fourteen to a much older man. two children survive. The bodies were found some time after the act.
John D. Fiske a lawyer and Opera house manager was shot dead by inventor Joseph T. Stillman after a quarrel near the Grand Central Hotel. Stillman claims Fiske attempted blackmail over patent interests and alleged wife’s knowledge of his alleged infidelity.
CicAGO July 28 A special board meeting of the World’s Columbian Exposition committee approved a plan to place the art gallery Government building and an electrical display on the lake front with the current grounds serving as an entrance. At Jackson Park the big machinery hall stock show mineral palace underground mining exhibit glass factory state exhibits Oriental villas and other displays.
On Saturday July 28 Union Civica and two garrison battalions sparked a revolution in Argentina’s capital. President Celman declared a siege as national guards moved to arms and more marine battalions sided with rebels. The governor was wounded, the president took refuge aboard a foreign ship, and General Manuel Campos joined the revolt.
Pa chello Bouchette an Italian shot and killed Francisco Frank thirty in New Rochelle New York yesterday afternoon. Frank had married seven months ago to a young Italian girl and Bouchette had long been infatuated with Mrs Frank. Bouchette visited the home urged her to leave Frank and live with him. Frank ordered him out and Bouchette fired four shots killing Frank instantly. Bouchette was arrested.
R K Clifton alias H J Jennings was arrested by a detective in Guam Alabama for suspected Rube Burrows gang train robbery. He is also wanted in Arkansas for horse stealing. Clifton claimed a Yell County Arkansas home and said he had little money and evaded officers. Express workers may send a Memphis man to identify him. He was heavily armed at arrest.
In Washington July 19 to July 25 the Senate and House debated the sundry civil appropriations bill, tariff measures, and the transfer of revenue marine duties to the Navy. Resolutions honored deceased members, nominations were sent to the Senate, and bankruptcy legislation dominated floor action with lengthy debates and votes.
The Academy of Medicine heard a question from the Chamber of Deputies president about night work for women in public factories. Dr. Rochard warned that any law allowing such work would harm women’s health. The Council of Public Hygiene confirmed a law restricting young girls under sixteen from pedal sewing machines.
Dr Parr claimed his sermon was clear yet a laboring man misunderstood felicity as a part inside a pig. The rector tested him by asking the word’s meaning, revealing plain folk’s unfamiliarity with learned terms.
