Three men attempted a daylight robbery aboard a northbound Cincinnati Jackson and Michigan train at Enterprise Ohio. They overpowered engineer Vandevender and his assistant with iron bars but failed to stop the train. The engine and a switch engine crashed. Vandevender died in the wreck as passengers watched the unpiloted train rush through Van Wert.

Eugene Schuyler American Consul-General in Cairo dies in his post in Cairo on a Friday. For years in U S diplomacy he served as attaché to several legations and was once Minister to Greece Romania and Serbia. He was nominated Assistant Secretary of State but his confirmation was withdrawn amid Republican opposition. He later served as Consul-General at Cairo until his death.
