The Herald congratulates the local high school debating team and its instructor after several wins in area contests. It urges attendance at a Thanksgiving service at Butler Nazarene Church led by Rev. Gordon Hunter with pastors Rev. Bohler and Rev. Hancock participating.
Slim 13-year-old Virginia Nelson of Ideal Georgia has accumulated $55 in prizes at Macon County and Macon Fairs. She earns awards from $1 to $5 for crafts, sewing, cooking and canning, as praised by her home demonstration agent Mrs. Martin Smith. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nelson.
Buena Vista Georgia November 12 J M Rogers a leading Chattahoochee Valley lawyer urged Marion county commissioners elect C D Duncan T J Pilcher and G C Singleton in an open letter to consider abolishing beer and wine sales The issue which has sparked controversy for years saw two county establishments licensed to sell the intoxicants with outgoing Commissioner O N Singleton becoming a state senator The new commissioners said the question should be voted on by the people and action would be considered at the January meeting They could not reach G C Singleton for comment
The Butler Bears clash with Reynolds Tuesday night at the new Reynolds gym in a return game. Butler won easily in the first meeting but Reynolds has shown rapid improvement and aims to challenge. Tipoff is set for 7 30.
At Mt Pisgah Baptist Church Sunday School opens at 10 30 a m with Carroll Peacock as superintendent. Preaching at 11 30 by the pastor using Isaiah 64 6 and James 14 texts. Evening preaching at 7 o clock the Home series continues with Our Children in the Home. Pastoral invitation for all to attend and pray.
Butler High School wins the western half of the Third District debate. Team members Gordener Blackston Glenda Giles Harold Sullins and Buddy Dunn defeated Leslie. The Butler one act play We Bet on Debts tied with Vienna for a Dreary contest win and will advance to finals with cast Priscilla Jones Glenda Giles Harold Sullins and Preston Childs praised by a large Reynolds audience.
Taylor County announces the start of its fall wildfire season with precautions for brush burning. Advice includes plowing a firebreak, burning after 4 pm on calm days, having tools and water ready, and checking with the Forestry Unit at 8805 Butler to assess daily safety. Ranger Austin Guinn notes past losses in North Georgia and praises local fire protection efforts.
A Columbus woman learned her Army officer husband is among 20 missing aboard a C-119 Flying Boxcar lost since Saturday in the Arctic. Lt. Col. David Laughlin, 36, was en route from Anchorage to Kodiak when the aircraft vanished. Mrs Lunghuhn, daughter of R. J. Bagget, planned to join him in Alaska.
Macon Georgia detectives say two "big time" gatecrackers known as the best in the South were arrested with nitroglycerine enough to blow 100 safes. William C. Carr and Grady W. St. Clair, both 44, were detained after the Sept. 19 Southern Discount Co. burglary and tied to a recent Atlanta heist. Carr carried 1785 dollars and St. Clair 141. Both men have long police records and were released on parole from Raiford Prison.
Marshallville Georgia observes Dolly Rice Day at the Baptist church honoring longtime Sunday school teacher and WMU treasurer for 67 years. Local leaders present a corsage pin and pastor Rev Charles Evans offers a commemorative portfolio with messages from pastors and friends.
Mr Calhun Jones aged 70 died at a Keysville convalescence home after several months as an invalid. Information reached here late last night. He was brother of Mrs Ruth Jones West and survived by a few nieces and nephews.

The Mauk Methodist church will hold a Tuesday 7:30 p m preaching service led by Pastor C W Hancock. It marks the start of monthly week night services with a cordial welcome to all residents of Mauk community.
Rev Hugh Smead Wallace, born in Butler, aged 67, died recently and was buried in Eatonton. He served Baptist pastorates across Georgia Florida Tennessee and Alabama. Survivors include wife Carrie B Wallace of Eatonton son Hugh S III Albany daughter Jule McMichael Reidsville NC six grandchildren and two sisters N G Parker Atlanta and Mrs John L Mann Knoxville.
A Norfolk report states a 16,000 ton oil tanker struck the portside of the attack transport USS Ruchambin early Friday off Cape Henry Virginia, killing at least five soldiers and injuring 31 navy and marine personnel. The collision forced postponement of a large amphibious exercise near Virginia Beach as a board of inquiry opens.
Circle Two of the One-Act Play Contest will be presented in Reynolds High School auditorium Monday at 7 30 p m. Four schools will perform Reynolds Vienna Butler and Oglethorpe with admission set at 25 and 50 cents. The public is invited to attend each play.

James Marchman McKenney 33 prominent Thomaston businessman died when the car he rode in overturned on a curve ten miles south of Thomaston. The vehicle’s brakes reportedly locked on the sharp Po-Bidy road. He was survived by his wife Jacquelyn Blount, daughter Joyce, his parents and four siblings. Funeral services were held at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Glenwood Cemetery. He was a member of several local organizations.
Col Lloyd A Corkan 55 chief of staff at Camp Stewart was shot in the back while hunting on the post. Sheriff Sikes said it did not look like an accident and identified one shooter as First Lt F A Shaw Jr. A warrant officer later admitted to fatally shooting Corkan but was exonerated by a carner's jury.
