The county conducts voter registration and election activity as registrars of Taylor County purify the voter rolls. The Foard will be in session all next week. The Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church has called and may appoint Rev. J. T. Adams as pastor, with an expected acceptance.
The Third Georgia Congressional Executive Committee sets September 10 1980 as the Democratic primary date in fifteen counties, to be in Americus September 11 1980. Jno M Greer of Oglethorpe is secretary and candidate Chase Crisp seeks Congress with no opposition. The rules require a district primary for the 72nd Congress, with specific eligibility, voting, certification, delegate selection, and filing fees, and urge newspapers to publish the resolutions.
The Herald notes the first Butler commencement, a visit by Prof G Branch of Valdosta State College soliciting pupils, and a revival at the Methodist church with baptists to join. Also mentions Wheeler Williamson as assistant at the Central railroad depot and a Taylor County Democratic committee meeting on May 10 to set rules for General Assembly entrants.

Atlanta police capture escaped life convict Jack Martin alias Kenton and a girl, Ruth Casaway, after a late night pursuit. Martin, wanted in Detroit for a hold-up and linked to a Macon killing, claimed the Walton county chain gang escape. Authorities hold both on a technical suspicion as Detroit and Omaha inquiries proceed.
A long awaited deal closed this week makes Oscar Dreizin the buyer of the R.S. West lot. The site lies between Dreizin’s new store and W. G. Hill’s building. Dreizin plans a new structure on the lot starting next week, following the December 24 fire that destroyed the Dreizin store.
News arrives of the death of Mr. Jim Purvis about 80 formerly of this county. He died Monday at his Americus, Georgia home. Funeral and burial took place in Americus yesterday with relatives and friends from Taylor county in attendance.

Reynolds will host a poultry car from 8 to 1 a m and Butley from 2 to 6 p m on Tuesday May 6. Bids not yet received will be distributed countywide by Thursday through schools and merchants. Prices likely lower than last month as fryers increase, with cooperative sales boosting returns. County Agent Butler can provide pricing details.
In Macon Georgia on a Monday morning a drunken man, John Thomas Forrest, 39, opened fire on two police officers Capt. J. B. Robarts and J. H. Stewart. Both officers fired back. Forrest was killed by three bullets to the left shoulder. A coroner's jury ruled the homicide justifiable. Bullets pierced the officers’ car doors, one striking Stewart’s cap.
The Taylor County Board of Registrars is in session with members Mrs. Sara Gross and Messrs L. T. Horton and Garrett. Tax Collector G. A. Roberts serves as an ex officio member.
Perry Ga April 28 J H Guller clerk of the superior court of Houston county for nearly half a century died in Perry Sunday at the age of 65 He began work in the office as a Boy of 15 later succeeding his father as clerk The article also reports on Tillman EB Davis on trial in Andalusia Ala for the murder of his wife with poisoning and a wreck used as a decoy in what is described as a notable case with a related insurance motive
Clyde Hill, recently sentenced for forgery and famed for a sensational prison escape, is in Sheriff R Pyle Guffin’s custody. The letter to Judge C McLaughlin, mailed April 21 from a Knoxville hotel, pleads no reply and hints at whereabouts. Hill blames a bank failure for his woes, says his wife and children face hardship, and that a physician fears he has only years to live due to kidney trouble. He mentions his past prominence as a druggist and citizen, his earlier recapture at Macon, and subsequent escapes while being returned to the state farm.
Butler Baptist Church begins revival Sunday night May 4 with Rev J K Brown preaching at a union service with Methodist guests. Rev T R Harvill of Millen will arrive Monday to preach, delivering a series of messages. Pastor E H Dunn invites all to attend and join in prayer and worship through the important days.
Roberta schools observe National Childs Health Day on May 1 with exercises on the grounds. Students scoring perfect in body and health habits are named gold star students and will perform in the May day program. An original health pageant competes for a prize from the Georgia Tuberculosis association and the Georgia Home Economics association.
Friends of Capt. Joe Steed a popular passenger train conductor on the Central railroad are glad to learn he has resumed his regular duties after an eight week illness. He was treated for blood poisoning and was bedbound or on crutches during part of the period.

Trustees of the Butler consolidated school announce the grammar school term ends tomorrow with promotion and report cards to be issued. The plan may delay resumption until October as county boards consider a county wide start. Teachers have completed required work though limited time for review. High school classes extend for three more weeks ending with graduation exercises.
Mr. Bryant Wadsworth a longtime farmer in this county died after a brief paralysis at his Midway community home. He was about 57, born here, survived by his wife Miss Wellons, a son L T Wadsworth of Winston Salem, two daughters Myrtle Whittley and Ruth Tidwell, his mother Mrs T A Shoupe, a brother C M Wadsworth and half brother Arthur Wadsworth. Funeral at Midway Church and Cemetery conducted by Rev M S Gaultney.
Memorial Day exercises conducted by the Wallace-Edwards chapter U D in the Baptist church honored Confederate dead. School children marched to the cemetery to place flowers on graves. Hon. J D McGehee of Columbus delivered a renowned speech. Rev EB JH Dunn offered the invocation. A musical program by local singers accompanied the event.
Mr. H. BE) Saylor, a leading Panhandle resident, narrowly escaped serious injury Sunday night when his car left the Patsiliga creek turnpike north of Reynolds. It plunged over an embankment into mud and water, but he escaped with only minor injuries and little car damage.
A preliminary census report shows Columbus with 2,871 residents, up from 81,125 in 1920, a 37.7 percent gain. Bible City Colum bee suburb records 481,707 people, growing from 1,090 ten years earlier.
Leroy Scott, 17, a Black laborer, confessed to striking a Screven County farmer's wife with an axe last week and attempting to assault her daughter. He was held in an undisclosed jail location pending trial May 21 after a confession obtained in the sheriff’s presence. Authorities said he continued working in a nearby field and kept his employer’s trust.
Dude Bell, a fugitive negro, was captured by officers at Opelika Alabama after a Sunday confrontation that left Mr Roy Byrd shot in the left temple and losing an eye. Byrd lingered near death at first but recovered enough to return home, with Reynolds physicians noting his improving condition. The capture follows a coast toward October court, with McGurrin tracking the suspect to a prison in Alabama.
Buena Vista Ga April 29 E F Johnson former representative from Chattahoochee county and former state senator from the 24th district was acquitted of forgery after state’s principal witness testified Johnson had authority to sign his name to a mortgage note The charge stemmed from Johnson’s deposit of the note as collateral for a job last year He had earlier been jailed in Talbotton on a forgery charge but was released on bond and failed to appear at the March term of court His Marion county charges trial was later set
Lewis Underwood a negro pleaded guilty in Buena Vista superior court to a charge connected with the slaying of Jim McNeal at a Marion county turpentine camp. He was arrested in Birmingham Alabama after posing as the slain man to claim a Meridian bank account.
Sheriff R P McGuffin led a raid in the northern county section Saturday destroying a one thousand gallon still. After the operation he dumped mash into the creek and seized ten gallons of whiskey, cleared away in the waterway.
The Board of Registrars in Butler Georgia convenes at the courthouse for voter transfers and qualification. Voters wishing to transfer districts must request in person and those not legally qualified will be stricken from the list. If in doubt about eligibility, come now before election day.
