County Spelling Bee Held Here Tomorrow Night

The State Highway Department will open bids March 28 on 18 construction contracts totaling about 3.47 million dollars. Four state aid projects will cost around 150 thousand.14 projects financed half by state and half by federal funds. One project includes a causeway linking Jekyll Island to Brunswick with an estimated price of 1 million dollars. Previous bids for the Jekyll project were rejected as too high.

Fire of undetermined origin struck early Sunday at the City Cafe housed in the Butler Banking Company building on the public square. The blaze damaged one corner and caused smoke and water damage to other sections. Owners Edwards Bros. hold insurance partial coverage. Watchman Dies After Being Struck by Car
Watchman Mr. Co B Birdsong of Scott Construction died at Montgomery hospital Butler after being struck by an automobile driven by Robert D Martin of College Park. Martin is jailed on involuntary manslaughter charges. Birdsong, a Talbot county resident, had been lighting red lights at a road work zone when injured. Funeral services were held at Center ville Methodist church with burial in the family plot. Survivors include three sisters and several brothers.

Butler American Legion Post 124 secured the loan of Emiel Garrett's Oriental Rug valued by experts at 150000 dollars. It will be displayed at the Dean Theatre Tuesday after noon March 23 from 1 to 6. Admission is 25 cents or more with proceeds to the Legion Club House building fund. The rug will move to Rich's in Atlanta on April 1.
