A reflective piece notes rising burn deaths amid widespread fires and springtime activity. Dr. S. P. Wise III of San Benito Texas has been accepted as a certified diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. The Plains native and son of Dr. B. T. Wise recently joined the Casey Clinic in San Benito as part of this professional milestone.
A joint conference committee agreed to a compromise bill granting congressmen a 7500 dollar yearly pay hike and a 1250 dollar tax free expense allowance. The plan returns to the House before moving to the Senate and then to President Eisenhower for signature.
Georgia Power Company delivered checks totaling 1 235 74 to Butler and 944 94 to Reynolds and 793 82 to Roberta this week. The city received three percent of gross receipts from electric sales under the Municipal Partnership Plan supplementing property taxes. 1954 total company taxes exceed 18 600 000 with over 1 475 000 to Georgia communities under the plan up from last year. Federal income tax surpassed 11 7 million. City county and state property taxes reached 3 9 million in 1954, up from 3 63 million in 1953.
Miss Martha McAlpine Agricultural Extension Specialist from Athens works with Taylor County Home Demonstration Club leaders to plan the 1955 Family Living program. She will confer with the Home Demonstration Agent in the morning and assist club officers in the courthouse at 2 30 p m with the Family Life plan. Attendees include Mrs Calvin Jarrell Mrs Floyd Jarrell Central Club Mrs Paul Montgomery Mrs Booker Montgomery Crowell Club Mrs R D Waller Mrs S B Austin Mauk Club Mrs Julian Cooper Mrs Ron Cooper Rupert Club and Miss Ann Smith Home Demonstration Agent.
A revival starts Sunday at Lebanon Baptist Church on the paved highway south of town. Sunday school at 10 a.m. preaching at 11 a.m. B T U at 7 p.m. preaching at 8 p.m. each evening through the next week including Sunday March 12 at 7 30. Pastor Rev Mobley Cross will teach. All welcome.

Sally Horton daughter of Mr and Mrs C H Horton Reynolds wins the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow program at her school as top scorer in the statewide written exam. The national winner is named April 21 in Philadelphia with a 1500 scholarship and a trip for the winner and advisor.
George Hammack owner of Hammack Electric and Supply in Butler won a week long Bermuda vacation from the Thoben Elrod Company for leading sales of refrigerator range and freezer units in this state section. The trip runs March 5 from Atlanta to New York, ship to Bermuda, returning March 12, with Hammack declining the trip to focus on a new sales campaign.
Mrs. John Peterman of Butler is named chairman of Taylor County Easter Seal Campaign for 1955 with district chair Neil A. Stokes Jr. announcing. Mrs. J. F. Sikes of Butler is appointed county treasurer. The drive runs March 10 to Easter Sunday April 10. letters will be mailed to county residents.
Local gym hosts Minstrel Friday Nite on March 11 benefiting the County Health Council. Admission 50c adults 25c children. Star performers include Harold Gates Hoot Russell Bob Burns Julian Whatley Leonard Whatley Murray Jarrell and Jack Peed with a large supporting cast and chorus of local women and girls.
James Minor leads a panel of three physicians at Phenix City Central High School auditorium for a medical forum on heart attacks. Moderator Dr Norman S Luton from Phenix City assists. Dr Guy J Dillard of Columbus presents on heart attacks. Capt James B Minor of Fort Benning, chief of cardiology, represents the Army Hospital.
State mourns Rev. Ralph Porterfield 60 pastor of First Methodist Albany for four years died Feb. 22 at his Albany home. A Comer Georgia native and Emory University graduate he previously led the Americus district. He also served churches in Bainbridge Richland Cordele Americus Columbus Savannah Macon and Thomasville.
Taylor county friends of Mrs. Martha Chapman daughter of Mrs. Nettie Sanders will be gratified to learn of her acceptance after extensive investigation into the Purchasing Agents Association of Atlanta. Mrs Chapman purchasing agent for Carthers Wallace Courtney Inc becomes the second woman ever accepted for membership in the Atlanta purchasers group.
Otis E Montfort 65 of Manchester died Monday at his home after a long illness. He was born in Butler the son of Frank B Montfort and Billie S Montfort. He attended the University of Georgia and joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church American Legion and former member of the Manchester Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife a daughter Mrs R C Fryer granddaughters Harilyn and Cynthia Fryer a brother E K Montfort of Montezuma and a sister Mrs W H Slade of Manchester. Funeral at 2 p m at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev W G Harry and Rev Carl McGrady officiating.
John W. Musslewhite born April 10 1880 in Macon County died February 19 at his Jacksonville Florida home after a month long illness Funeral services were held February 22 in Jacksonville Elders J B Pelham and L H Crawford officiated He was survived by his wife Nellie Musslewhite seven sisters and five brothers with numerous nieces and nephews listed in Reynolds and nearby states
Laymen from the Butler Charge will lead services next Sunday across Wesley Mauk Howard and Butler churches as Expansion Day observances. Speakers include W W Hartman J A Gibson Jordan Giles and Rev G E Clay with Union Church hosting March 13 led by Frank Riley. The Expansion Day Offering supports several great causes. Antioch Baptist church will start a Bible study on Monday at 7:30 p m and run each evening for the following week. The course, Church Revival, is open to all interested Christians. Pastor J H Stanford invites participation.
Obituary for Robert Sampson Foy born May 27 1869 son of Wm Wesley Foy and Nancy Coleman Hays Foy. He practiced law in Butler and Sylvester, served 16 years as Solicitor General of the Tifton Circuit, and led Worth County Bar Association before retiring in 1953. Funeral held at Union Church with ministers Hoke Hatcher J C Whitener and James Carmichael.
The annual Red Cross campaign began Tuesday morning with a county quota of 610 dollars and district targets. Volunteers seek local contributions, citing the Red Cross disaster relief, services for service members families and prior aid after the 1954 tornado. The Taylor County Chapter headed by Thelmon Jarrell requests support.
