Drought of 1893 4 spurred founding of Fitzgerald Georgia
Government sponsored colonization in Alaska with drought hit families inspired older Fitzgerald residents to recall the city’s origin. A 1898 94 drought drove Southern governors to aid distressed farmers, leading to a colonization plan by veterans of the Union army. Georgia officials helped locate colony lands now in Ben Hill County, and Fitzgerald grew from 3,500 Northerners settling nearby to a city of 7,500. The town laid out square streets with names honoring generals, trees, rivers, and battleships. It touts free public schooling and municipal waterworks and power.
