Delegates Entertained at Two Day Methodist Meet

The Columbus District Conference of the Methodist church met in Talbotton Tuesday and Wednesday with traveling delegates from across the district. A special program included welcome by Col. John McGehee, sermons by Rev. Osgood Cook and Rev. Jno. M. Cutler, and women’s society lunches at Straus-LeVert Memorial Hall. The 1939 session will go to Richland. delegates and alternates were elected, and district statistics were shared, including 25 charges and 77 churches.

Daniel Family Returns to Butler to Make Home

Mr. and Mrs. George M. Daniel, Mr. Thomas Daniel and Miss Lorena Daniel have returned to Butler yesterday and are making their home in the city. They left Butler five years ago and have since resided in Atlanta. Butler citizens welcome the esteemed family back into their midst.

Ellaville Georgia June 11 Frank M DeVane Schley counties sole surviving Confederate veteran turns 94 Wednesday He lives in Chattanooga with his daughter Mrs Jesse Clonts His memory centers on meeting General Robert E Lee after the April 1865 farewell address He recalls soldiers tearing up an apple tree for souvenirs He fought in many battles including Gettysburg and Wilderness He volunteered in 1861 at age 18 with Company B of the 17th Georgia Regiment He was born June 15 1844 in Schley County to Liza and J T DeVane He married Polly Wall and fathered eleven children six living He has 99 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren

Bobby Adams Fatally Hurt After Fall From Wagon

Four year old Bobby Eugene Adams of Thomaston was fatally injured Tuesday when he fell from a wagon and sacks of wheat crushed him. He died shortly after the accident. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Pasley’s Funeral Home with interment in Shiloh cemetery. Survived by his parents, four brothers and a sister. nephew of A L Waters and Mrs Bonard Bazemore.

Smallpox Vaccination Clinic At Butler On Monday

Fry to shift big factory to Columbus Georgia

Detroit June 14 Walter L Fry prominent sit down boss said he will move the major manufacturing division of Dry Products Inc to Columbus Georgia due to rising Michigan wage rates. He reported an 1987 gross of 1 817 000 and only a five thousand dollar profit after costs. The transfer would cost about 350 Detroit jobs and Fry stressed no quarrel with labor.

Taylor County Motorists Pay High Gasoline Taxes

Taylor County officials report Georgia gasoline tax revenues rose to 19.56 million dollars in 1987, up from 17.50 million in 1986 and 14.37 million in 1984. J A Payne of the Taylor County Petroleum Industries committee urges reasonable taxation, notes motorists fund road building, and calls for eliminating duplication with a federal tax.

Many Taylor County Men Risked Lives In The World War

The article notes 385 Taylor county men enlisted and served in World War I with counts by locality: Reynolds 148 Butler 108 Howard 84 Mark 82 Charing 11 and Rupert 11. Wage Hour Bill Advances as Congress Near Adjournment

Washington June 14 The 75th congress moved toward adjournment as the House approved the compromise one hour wage hour conference report and sent it to the Senate for action. President Roosevelt expected to sign after Senate approval. Also advancing were a recovery bill conference report and railroad loan amendments. Senate and house leaders outlined further adjournment steps and smaller measures.

Survey for underpass on Highway Three at Butler

The State Highway Department is surveying for a proposed underpass to route Highway Three under the Central of Georgia railroad. If authorized, the project would remove a dangerous grade crossing and two sharp curves within Butler city limits. The underpass would start near Vanlandingham's Service Station, pass behind the West Hotel, and rejoin the highway south of R. L. Sutton's residence.

Sidewalks In Butler Now Being Paved, Mayor In Charge

Work has begun to pave and widen sidewalks in Butler's business district under Mayor O. D. Gorman. Some funds come from a government grant and the rest from property owners. Residential sidewalks have been reworked with a PWA grant. The project aims to beautify the city.

Father’s Day Sermons Held at Local Baptist Church

Reverend R C Howard of Butler Baptist delivered a Father’s Day sermon to a large congregation Sunday morning. Reverend S H Macorkle of Ellaville and Primitive Baptist church preached the evening service at the invitation of Howard. Macorkle’s message drew a large crowd.
