First Gas Engine by Lenoir Marks Invention

The first practical gas engine was built in 1860 by French inventor Lenoir. The single cylinder machine resembled a horizontal steam engine and operated double acting, drawing gas in during the forward stroke and igniting it by an electric spark to drive the piston, with exhaust during the return stroke. It was inefficient due to lack of compression.
