A 16 year old farm boy, Oliver Terpening, told state police he killed four children while they picked flowers to feel the thrill of killing. He said the act disappointed him as no thrill was achieved. He confessed to slaying Barbara 16 Stanley 14 Gladys 12 and Janet Smith 2 near Lapeer Michigan and expressed thoughts of harming his stepmother but did not act. His mother Mrs. Mattie Arnold was mentioned in connection to the case.
In Bolingbroke 40 miles north of Macon an explosion on a Central of Georgia freight engine killed Engineer C. S. Simson and Fireman H. Cannon from Macon. The 65 car train was en route from Atlanta to Macon. Service resumed after investigation begins.
Glendale, Calif , would take the news Terpening was arrested in Toledo Ohio after hitching a ride with a painter who recognized him from a broadcast alarm.
A global wave of air crashes over two days has claimed 174 lives with 26 injured and three missing. Notable disasters include an Eastern Airlines DC 4 near Port Deposit Maryland with 53 fatalities and a United Airlines crash in New York causing 40 deaths.
