Two defeated candidates in the Macon County Democratic primary in Montezuma Georgia filed notices challenging the election as premature prior to voter registration deadlines. Attorney Jule W Felton served the chairman of the county committee with the protest.
An ongoing legal issue asks whether county primaries held before the normal registration close are valid. Attorney General Yeomans weighed in earlier, echoing Bibb County findings that such early primaries require new registration lists. Taylor County plans a March 25 primary, prompting the County Democratic Executive Committee to seek candidate agreements not to file illegality grounds.
The Taylor County primary is set for Wednesday March 25 with a potential run off on Saturday April dth if no candidate wins a majority. Filing closes February 29 at 6 pm for candidates. ballots use the Australian system. multiple county offices up for election. list of announced candidates includes incumbents and new filings across Ordinary Sheriff Clerk Superior Court Tax Commissioner and more.

The Reynolds Butler sale Feb Std was reported successful by County Agent G C Daniel. The truck left Butler at 5 p m with a heavy load. 5 625 lb poultry and 360 dozen white eggs plus 114 dozen mixed eggs. The next truck should load even more heavily as spring approaches.

W C Duke age 60 longtime farmer near Reynolds dies at home in Marshallville of pneumonia. His wife and eight children survive him. The death occurred Tuesday and is a sorrowful loss to Taylor county friends.

News of the death of Judge A W Cozart 65 sparked tributes across Georgia. The Columbus jurist, once recorder, died after bronchial pneumonia. Funeral services were held in Columbus with Georgia Bar Association officials and colleagues in attendance. He authored Georgia Practice Rules and several biographical works. He was born June 18 1870 in Tennessee and moved to Georgia early in life.
A three act mystery titled The Hotel Duchess will be staged at the Mauk school building Friday night February 14 at 7:80 o clock. Tickets are 20 cents for adults and 10 cents for school children. In Athens Georgia on February 9 A pen of White Leghorns owned by W A Seidel of San Antonio Texas leads the tenth Georgia national egg laying contest averaging 128 eggs per hen in 128 days. 706 birds from 20 states entered the contest at the University of Georgia college of agriculture with A E Guinn of Butler Georgia placing fourth.
The Taylor community mourns the death of Mr. P T Hamilton age 57, known as Captain Tom Hamilton. Born in Taylor county he rose to conductor on the G S F division between Macon and Jacksonville. Survived by wife Daisy Lee Brown two sons W T and Louis Hamilton of Macon four daughters Martha Walter Stamatis and Mrs Vernon Halcomb both of Macon and two sisters Mrs Renfroe and Mrs Hill with other relatives. Funeral Sunday at Burghard Conally chapel in Macon followed by interment in Macon Memorial Park.
A reader compares this December and January to past winters noting many days below freezing and frequent rain and snows. The Herald summarizes a tabulation showing 37 freezing days and 19 rainy days over the sixty two day period with two snows, amid predictions of more rain and a heavy freeze.

Julius Cooper, about 22, son of Jim Cooper, was critically wounded by a pistol shot to the left breast at his parents' home on Route Three, two miles south of Rupert. He was shot in the morning after emerging from the residence, despondent over unemployment, with doctors hoping for recovery unless complications arise.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 oclock for Mrs. Vera Barnett Brooks of Thomaston died earlier this week from pneumonia after flu. Survived by husband H J Brooks, an adopted son, three brothers, one sister. Born in Taylor County, long connected with Butler merchants. Teamed with Rev W E Hightower to conduct service at Bethel Primitive Baptist church. Edwards Bros. in charge of arrangements.
A school bus carrying twenty one children to Midland School was sideswiped by a hit and run truck near Columbus Georgia on Friday. Ten children were injured with four needing hospital care. several were treated and discharged the same day. Driver Jim Gibson of Midland remained with the bus when the crash forced it off the road and into a ditch. Chief J W Satterfield said the suspected truck was later found parked on the road.

Hon Rufus E Watkins, longtime Cedar Creek district Justice of the Peace and civic leader, died Friday after a brief illness. He contributed to the Methodist church, Woodmen of the World, and local politics, including securing support for what became U S Highway 19. Funeral services were held Saturday at Sand Bethel Methodist Church with Rev. W. E. Hightower officiating.
Brooks Posey, 42, a former Butler resident, died after a lingering illness at the veterans hospital in Atlanta. A Taylor County native and World War II veteran, he is survived by his wife, two sons B. J. and James, a daughter Katherine, his mother Mrs. J. M. Posey, brother Herbert Posey, and sisters Mrs Claude B. Wade, Mrs Hinton Harris, and Mrs Z. J. Amerson. Funeral and interment were held Thursday at New Providence Church near Forsyth.
