Convicts Die in Fire Near Scottsboro Alabama Tragedy

In Scottsboro Alabama two prisoners died when a transfer truck caught fire after a prisoner tried to warm his hands with a lighted paper. Paul Dawson and John Stokes survived, rescued by guards H M Middlebrooks and C R Wasson who suffered burns while freeing others. The blaze spread after gasoline spilled on the floor during the escape attempt.

Anderson Critics State Tax Plan for Road Financing in Georgia

Columbus Ga Feb 3 W T Peerson Macon publisher argued at a regional meeting that Georgia could take over road financing with a 15 percent sales tax and divert some taxes to education. He said fuel taxes could fund road building and maintenance, calling current local tax schemes inequitable. Senator Lester of Augusta chaired the state taxation panel.

Roosevelt asks repeal of major farm laws

President Roosevelt urged Congress to repeal the Bankhead Cotton Control Act Kerr Smith Tobacco Act and Potato Act of 1935 citing the termination of the Agricultural Adjustment Act program and the Supreme Court decision invalidating the AAA auxiliary acts. Georgia Floods Rise as Rains Drench the State

Heavy rains and snowmelt flooded northwest Georgia with rivers at their highest levels in years. The Chattooga at Trion and Lyerly topped records, swamping homes and closing the Trion cotton mill and public schools. Roads and bridges were nearly impassable, complicating travel across the county.

Macon Youths Sentenced for Car Theft in Five Points Incident

Three Macon youths Gus Yancey 19 George Thomas 18 and Vernon Collins 18 were sentenced to one to five years each for stealing a Chevrolet from Henry Koplin. They had obtained gas at the W A Jarrell filling station Five Points north of Butler then left without paying. Dick Sam Swearingen’s self grown cotton crop triumph

In 1985 Dick Sam Swearingen of Charing Taylor County cultivated 3.31 acres with a push plow and hoe, planting with help from a neighbor for two mule days. He harvested 1118 pounds of lint and paid $28.80 processing tax, proving determination can yield reward.

Six Talbot Prisoners Recaptured by Sheriff

Talbotton Ga Feb 3 Sheriff John Shipp reports six prisoners escaped from Talbot county jail Sunday have been recaptured. Four are negroes and two are white men. Five were taken Sunday night and the sixth near Box Springs Monday night. The sheriff was over powered during the escape.

Mrs Mitt Hogg Dies at Buena Vista Home

Mrs Mittie Fuliston Hogg, 82, longtime Taylor County resident and former Texas schoolteacher, died Monday at the Buena Vista home of Mrs W L Bradey. Interment followed at Farewell Cemetery. Survived by one brother in Tampa, Fla., and ten stepchildren, five living.
