Night Fire Destroys Major Brick Block in Town

A fierce blaze on an April night destroyed the Masonic and several adjacent blocks near Broad and Paine streets. The flames consumed many shops including a jewelry store, millinery, a restaurant, and a large stock at Peebles storehouse. Horses perished and substantial property damage occurred. The cause remains unknown. officials vow brick and stone rebuild.

Uncle Charlie Walker 82 Dies at Home in Butler

Charlie Walker known as Uncle Charlie died suddenly at his Butler home Friday morning at about seven. An 82 year old carpenter, he helped build many business houses and residences over fifty years. His wife has been an invalid for 12 years and he cared for her with devotion. They left several children respected in the community.

Near relative of Mrs L P Anthony dies in Houston

Joseph Morgan Browne 88, Civil War veteran and near relative of Mrs Anna Anthony Browne, died at 11 p m Saturday in Houston. He moved from Beaumont to Houston 18 years ago and is survived by his wife and one daughter. Browne was active in the United Confederate Veterans and had ties to Taylor County. His father, Maj Thomas Browne, owned a plantation near Columbia Alabama and served in the Confederate army. Browne married Anna Anthony of Taylor County and moved to Beaumont in 1901 before his interment.

Mr Amos Byrd 80 Dies in Butler Community

Obituary for Mr Amos Byrd of Butler who died Sunday at age 80 after pneumonia followed a brief illness while serving as a U S mail messenger between the post office and railway station. He was noted for honesty, energy, and community service, with surviving family including a widow, children, stepchildren, and siblings, and funeral services held Monday.
