Rev H C Marx urges revival prep at First Methodist Church Butler. He warns that indifference to Bible reading and church attendance threatens spiritual bankruptcy among Protestants. Public schedule includes Sunday School 10 00 AM Morning Worship 11 00 AM M Y F 7 15 PM Evening Worship 8 00 PM Mid Week Prayer 8 00 PM.
The Canning Plant will be open on Wednesday of this week and next week, after which it will close for this season. E. G. McCants, Voc Ag Inst.
Ashburn August 20 W H Fiveash ousted as Turner County sheriff after trials on misconduct larceny after trust and extortion. A Turner County Superior Court jury ruled him subject to removal and Tifton Circuit Judge J B Gray ordered removal. An acting sheriff likely until a special election. Fiveash faced 22 counts of misconduct.
Gov. Griffin signs a proclamation designating September for the Standardization of Rural Mail Boxes. Georgia Rural Letter Carrier's Assn president G. C. Barnhill and publicity director Carey Hillard join officials from the U S Post Office Department to launch the program as schools open. Vocational agriculture teachers in 300 high schools and over 17 000 Future Farmers of America will assist in installing new boxes. Barnhill urges civic groups to adopt the effort as a statewide community project.
Hon J J Flynt Jr member of Congress will address the Thomaston Production Credit Association annual stockholders meeting on Wednesday in the Upson County courthouse. The event invites the public to hear the former Griffin Circuit solicitor and first session of Congress participant. Directors listed include W J McDaniel Zebulon J E Ballard Sr Barnesville L E Hancock Thomaston Franklin Mc Cants Butler and J J Pierson Culloden.
Buford V West joins Butler High School as Agriculture instructor for the 1955 56 term. He will work with E G McCants, the current Agricultural Instructor, and is a Colquitt native who earned a B S in Agriculture from the University of Georgia in 1953. The staff total reaches 31 teachers, including non state paid music and band instructors. The lunch room will operate with the same staff as this year at Butler and Rupert.
Bloodhounds guided 50 officers to a woodland dead end where three California suspects were cornered after an 18 hour chase spanning 200 miles. They were identified as Frank Love Bob Hearera and Dewitt Byrd and faced armed robbery and shooting at officers charges. The group had stolen rings watches and gems from an Atlanta suburb store. Byrd was wounded in the leg during the final clash near Uvalda Georgia.
Three jewelry store robbers sought in Atlanta were transported from Mt. Vernon to Macon with heavy guard and jailed in Bibb County for safekeeping before trial. Guns, restraints and a squad of officers accompanied the transport past the courthouse on Third Street. Suspects identified as Frank Love and Robert Raymond Herrera, both of San Francisco, were secured for transfer.
A Homerville officer in Argyle on the Homerville Waycross highway stopped a septic tank truck noticing unusual hoses and no solicitation of work. A search yielded 624 gallons of moonshine aboard the vehicle.
Miss Elizabeth Parker a Baker High School teacher in Columbus and Miss Julia Parker DeKalb County Home Demonstration Agent sail home today aboard the Queen Mary from England. Elizabeth spent a year in England on a Fulbright Exchange. both sisters visited France Austria Belgium Scotland and other European sites. They are Reynolds natives and expect to arrive around September 1 in the city.
Thomaston announces Miss Jean Middlebrooks will represent Upson County in the Maid of Cotton contest in Griffin on Sept. 3. An honor graduate of R. E. Lee Institute, she will begin her junior year at Wesleyan College majoring in dramatics and has sung with the R. E. Lee choir and Thomaston First Methodist Church choir.
Governor Marvin Griffin designates September 11 to 18 as Soil Conservation Week and urges county agents to plan meetings. The observance includes tours, sermons, demonstrations in terracing drainage and pasture improvement, with cooperation from Extension Service, state and federal agencies, schools, and civic groups. Griffin notes Georgia’s strong agricultural base and the need to preserve soil to ensure farming success and ongoing supply of food and fiber.
Lester Farmer, 71, unmarried, died Friday in an Atlanta hospital after years with cancer. He farmed in southern Taylor county for about 48 years and belonged to Lebanon church. Funeral was Saturday at 10 a.m. with Rev. W. R. Lawhorn officiating. Pallbearers were Zeb Harris, Buddie Harris, Arthur Green, Am bry Albritton, Jack Harris, Albert Harris. Arrangements by Edwards Funeral Home. Survived by three sisters Mrs Onnie Crane Mrs Dell Trotter and Mrs Lula Chitwood and brothers M C Ed and Bill Farmer.
Public launched effort to revise the Taylor County jury box this week as required every three years. Names of white women and colored men are added, replacing deceased members from prior panels. Commission members include E. T. Shealy Ed Locke W. R. Lawhorn William Neisler and E. L. Harris.
Social Security official E. T. Moore will address Taylor County farm owners and operators at 8 p.m. Thursday at the local court house about recent changes. Attendance is urged as changes make Social Security compulsory for farmers. Farm laborers paid daily will be invited to a separate September meeting. they need not attend this session. Vernon R. Revival services begin at Charing Methodist Church Monday night and run through the next Sunday. A single worship service at 8 p m each day features Rev Ernest B Coffee the pastor as preacher. All are invited to attend this series of meetings.
Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church hosts an all day singing and Home Coming on Sunday. Donation for cemetery and church upkeep will be accepted during the event. Dinner is served on the church grounds at noon. Everyone is invited to attend and help make it an annual community occasion.
The Citizens State Bank reports growth as it adds Walter F Wilson and Eunice Fuller Olive to staff and notes a 1.5 million dollar deposits base with over 180 thousand in capital surplus and profits. W. H. Van Landingham heads the bank with Mae Childres vice president and cashier. Eunice Olive succeeds Rosamond Trussell. Wilson is son-in-law of the mayor and previously worked in Alabama and Georgia.
County youths are invited to join a five day Water Safety Life Saving course offered free of charge. Principal Hartwell Weaver of Butler High School will coordinate classes each afternoon at a local lake this week and in the coming weeks. The American Red Cross sponsors the program and will issue certificates to all who complete it.
The Herald notes visits from two ministers Rev Will Hill of Sandersville and Rev W B Hoats of Comer. Hill, once a revival evangelist and local Methodist member, now works in life insurance after retirement due to illness. Hoats, longtime pastor of Butler and Reynolds Baptist churches, is currently at Comer Baptist Church and stopped by Butler while en route to Reynolds to visit family.
