An undetermined number of persons were burned when a diesel tank exploded during a $50,000 Cochran mill fire. Fire Chief Ralph Purser said drums flew through the air and debris scattered across the area. Injured include Robert Brown Jr, Jimmy English, Bill Little, and Chief Purser.
James Robert Brewer died Sunday evening at the home of W. R. Brewer in Schley County. The funeral was held Monday at 4 p.m. at the Carter Wright family lot with Rev. J. L. Whitley in charge. Pallbearers included Tom and Wilburn Layfield Gerald Bryant Elbert Lawhorn Clyde Lawhorn and J. R. Brewer. He was born July 27, 1865 in Webster County and never married. He was a retired farmer in declining health due to old age. Surviving relatives include W. R. Brewer nephew Kate Brewer niece and J. R. Brewer great nephew.
Hurricane Connie weakened to gale size as it churned up the Carolina coast causing torrential rains and heavy seas. The storm already blamed for 20 deaths as it swept north through Virginia and into the Mid Atlantic region.
Florida and North Carolina points were hit as Hurricane Diane moved along a narrow Atlantic path with 115 mph winds. A second item describes evacuees from beach resorts in Bladenboro North Carolina amid Hurricane Connie and notes a Washington dinner interruption.
New Orleans police arrested Jim Combs and Julia Combs in connection with the death of Jim Frank Mann of Roberta. Mann died May 2 in a car fire. warrant sworn by W A Mann of Roberta names the couple as persons of interest. Sheriff O Neal said Mann’s death is not ruled a murder and a hearing is set. The victim’s family had accused four other individuals.
Hon E L Forrester, U S Representative from Georgia third district, will open his Americus office September 1 and keep it until December 1, weather permitting, at the Post Office Building.
Thomaston August 15 two Upson County men Joel Holloway The Rock and Virgil Smith Thomaston died from a traffic wreck on Highway 36 near The Rock. Eddie Shannon of Forsyth driving the other truck was uninjured. Holloway and Smith had been fox hunting and were returning home when the crash occurred at 5 am. Smith had lumber business ties in Thomaston while Holloway ran a store and service station by Rock Hill School on Barnesville highway.
Cotton growers in Taylor and neighboring counties praise Mr. F A Ricks of Reynolds for supplying gins for over forty years. The latest installation is a modern all steel gin with 50 to 60 bales daily capacity and fire proof design. It is his fifth gin in the county and follows prior plants from 1914. Mr. Ricks invites growers to inspect the new facility, touted as second to none in the state for quality and speed.
Albany reports Georgia 1955 pecan harvest projected at about 4 million pounds, 11 percent of normal, forcing processors to cut crews and delay openings. Dougherty county plants have been largely idle, with one large operation planning October startup at 25 percent capacity and 200 workers typically employed.
Athens August 10 More than 1000 Georgia farmers are expected to take part in the 1955 five acre cotton contest in which 3500 dollars will be offered in prizes.
Mr Hartwell Weaver announces the Butler High School faculty for the 1955 56 term starting September 12 with pre school week beginning September 5 The Rupert Grammar School consolidates with Butler adding students and teachers in lower grades The new building is expected to be ready for the term. Mr Malcolm Marchman heads Social Studies and Coach with Mr Hernon H Fox as new Biology and Education specialist.
David L Paulk Jr elected worshipful master for the coming year at the Georgia Third District Masonic Association convention in Ft Gaines. New officers include Paulk Sr secretary J E Logan treasurer and Rev C L Wall chaplain among others. Most Worshipful G P Whitman Sr. urged Masons to live religion daily during his keynote at the Legion clubhouse gathering.
John F. Chapman formerly of this county died in Albany. Funeral held at the local Baptist church with Rev. Lewis and Rev. J M Carmichael officiating. Interment in the family lot. Survived by wife Ludie Rhodes two sons Frank and Paul and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Atlanta August 11 Governor Griffin states he will not engage in state politics next year sending a neutral stance from Chicago where he attends the National Governors Conference. He comments that former Governor Herman Talmadge and Senator Walter George are friends and no clear candidate will emerge, expressing doubt any contest will materialize.
Georgia congressional delegation and wives invited to a summer outing at Radium Springs August 21 to 23 by the Georgia Hotel Association. All but Sen. Dick Russell will attend. guests include Sen. Walter George and Representatives Preston Pilcher Forrester Davis Vinson Lanham Landrum Brown Blitch and others. Gov. Griffin and Lt. Gov. Vandiver invited. Albany officials to coordinate ceremonies and activities plus a golf tournament.
Two laymen from Ma con will occupy pulpits at Crowell Methodist at 11 a m and Reynolds Methodist in the evening. Pastor Rev M W Flanders and wife are on vacation at Lake Jumaluska N C. Sam Lamback will lead Crowell service and Ernest Kennedy will speak at Reynolds. Public invited to both services.
The Mauk Methodist church will open a Bible School Monday and run daily the next week from 2 to 4 30 p m. with sessions for primaries juniors intermediates and young people. Everyone in the community is invited to attend regardless of denomination.
The Maric Methodist church opens a revival this Sunday with worship at 12 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the day and services each evening at 8 p.m. Pastor Rev. Ernest B. Coffee will deliver the messages and all are invited to attend.
In Waverly Hall Georgia on August 14 dedication ceremonies for the new $150000 brick Waverly Hall Baptist Church were held. The morning service featured Mrs Edwin O Neal chairing the building committee and L W Slaughter accepting on behalf of the deacons. Dr F S Porter delivered the dedicatory sermon and Rev J W Howard led the project. Presiding pastor Rev J J Sizemore marked 22 years at Waverly Hall as the church joined a Columbus Baptist Association afternoon service with Wallace E Morton as principal speaker.
Butler Little League finishes 7 wins 2 losses to claim the Peach Belt pennant. Teams in the league include Butler Ft Valley Perry and Montezuma. They enter a double elimination playoff at Montezuma August 24 25 30 and 31 with Perry as their first opponent at 4 p.m. on August 24.
Rev. E H Dunn of Butler will preach at Antioch Baptist church Sunday morning and evening. Baptismal service at 10 a m with Sunday School at 10 30 a m. Morning worship at 11 30 a m and evening worship at 8 00 p m.
