Rov JW Lilley pastor of Bibb arge Macon Georgia will assist e pastor in revival services beginning Monday August 24 in the Butler Methodist area.
Ex-Governor John M Slaton spoke at the Taylor County courthouse Saturday to 163 attendees about his bid for the U S Senate challenging Senator W J Harris in Col J R Lunsford's absence. W E Steed introduced Slaton and the speech critiqued Harris cost and conduct.
County education plans call for fall opening of schools with a full faculty list for Butler Reynolds Crowells Maulk Turners Wesley Cross Roads and Central schools. Sept 1 to Sept 20 start dates shown for multiple faculties and truck drivers in the districts amid incomplete notes for Taylor Mill.
A new vocational agriculture instructor has joined Butler County High School for the term. The educator will serve alongside the existing faculty and teach agricultural mechanics courses. Local residents seek details on duties and qualifications.
Plans are set for the 1930-31 Butler Public Schools opening September 1 with an experienced faculty led by Supt. R. Brown. Tuition remains $2.50 per grammar term and $9.00 per high school term. non residents pay $10.00. A partial refund of 87 1/2 cents is offered to spring grammar tuition payers.
A group of local citizens toured about 35 Panhandle farms north of Reynolds, reporting large cotton and corn crops and noting modern farming methods. Highlights included John Mangham at Mangham estate, H. G. Fuller and Beall place, and the 800 acre Joe Mathews plantation now run by John Mangham with Lydia Goddard as his wife.
Butler patrons with sons in high school are invited to discuss the new vocational agriculture course. Teacher Wm Cowart offers to visit homes by appointment to explain course objectives to parents. Cotton market notes report middling at 10 cents per pound yesterday.
Gilbert C. Robinson of Columbus will be the principal speaker for the fourth district Women’s Christian Temperance Union program at Hamilton on August 21. Also on the program are H. G. Bradshaw of West Point and Mrs. R. W. Page, Mrs. J. A. Thomas, and Mrs. R. B. Ziegler of Columbus.
The melon market shows signs of collapse with many cars already loaded sitting idle on the track yesterday while bids were received for supply.
Judge L. T. Peed mailed pension checks to 26 widows and five veterans in the county. Each check covers the full amount due for three quarter payments, totaling 1550 dollars sent from the state department.
Cotton prices in Taylor County fell to a 1921 low with a flat 10 cents per pound for mid dling grades on Saturday. Buyers remained active as much of the staple sold, with traders expecting prices to hover around 8 to 12 cents for several weeks due to a large carryover and good 1930 prospects.
A new all electric bakery is being installed in the Edwards building’s second door south of the bank. Sponsor J. G. A. Roberts praises the project as town progress. R. F. DeYoung, with long bakery experience in Philadelphia and Atlanta, will install equipment and run the business. The facility will serve Butler and surrounding territory.
Mr and Mrs J W Watson of Thomaston mourn the death of their infant daughter Jane Adair Watson at a Macon sanitarium after a brief illness. She was the couple’s only child. Mrs Watson, formerly Miss Evelyn Gillmore of Butler, is remembered by Butler friends. Remains were sent to Americus for funeral services conducted by Rev H C Griffin.
The body of Deputy Sheriff Homer Bazemore was found near his home with a single gunshot wound to the forehead. A 38 caliber pistol lay nearby. witnesses offered circumstantial evidence suggesting self-inflicted death amid despondency. A coroner's jury returned a verdict that Bazemore died from a pistol shot fired by an unknown person. Bazemore, about 28, served five years with the sheriff's office and was highly regarded. He left a widow and several siblings. funeral services were held at Antioch Church with notable pallbearers.
The Butler Methodist church schedules a Sunday revival drawing attention from local residents. Rev H CG Griffin brings Rev J W Lilly to lead singing and child services, with Lilly praised as a gifted preacher and singer. The pastor invites all denominations and the community to attend.
R H Andrew of Macon deputy grand master of the grand lodge of Georgia Masons died unexpectedly in Stoughton Wisconsin while on vacation. He was scheduled to become grandmaster of the grand lodge of Georgia next year.
