War rages in the Far East yet a National Board of Fire Underwriters report links arson to broken homes poverty and alcohol rather than rings or firebugs. The analysis suggests helping troubled individuals reduces fires and notes alcohol imprisons family finances and domestic distress.
Georgia schools freeze state paid teachers at 21 330 for next term, signaling crowding and gaps. Officials say 900 more teachers are needed to maintain prior pupil per teacher ratio, with 600 by possible addition yet debate about impact. The State Board of Education imposed the halt after exhausting funds to raise quotas.
Officials from Third Congressional district newspapers met in Americus Sunday to form the Third District Press Association. Carl Rountree of the Dawson News was named president with Byron Anglin and Charles Benns Jr. as officers. The group aims to strengthen the Georgia Press Association and support press freedom while visiting a planned state printing trade school near Americus.
Work on Reynolds sewerage system started this week after years of talk. The effort united the Woman's Improvement Club Lion's Club American Legion and its Auxiliary and city officials. Easement rights were secured and the first pipes laid under Superintendent E H Hodrett. Estimated cost is 80000 dollars with completion expected by February 1 1951.
Rep Steve Pace of Georgia denounces a Brannan plan to sell government food surpluses at current wholesale prices. He warns the proposal would grant presidential power to set prices and contend it could undermine farm support price controls. Pace says the move risks politicizing the Farm Support program.
Mrs Myrtle Ellis 38 threw her infant niece to safety seconds before her Jeepster was hit by a Central of Georgia freight train at the North Lee street crossing in Forsyth around 12 30 p m. She was rushed to a hospital in serious condition and the incident is being investigated by Sheriff L C Bifick.
The Trevecca College Quartet from Nashville will lead Friday night services at Butler Nazarene church at 8 30 led by this highly regarded group. A cordial invitation is extended to the public to attend.
Mrs Susie Clark Crook widow of M L Crook Sr died at 2 p m Wednesday July 26 at her Taylor Mill home after several months illness. age about 71 born Taylor County member Mt Olive Freewill Baptist church funeral Thursday at 5 p m conducted by Rev John M Cox and Rev C H Moore with interment Mt Olive cemetery pallbearers Richmond Cox Madison Cox Reginal McInvale Grady Trussell Jessie Wright Gordon Crook honorary pallbearers J W Windham H Gates Louis Jones Morris Slaton Ray McInvale Edwards Bros Funeral Home in charge. Surviving two sons M L Crook Jr and Syd Crook Reynolds one daughter Mrs Rex McInvale one sister Mrs Jr A Howell Florida seven grandchildren seven great grandchildren.
Taylor county delegates to the State Democratic Convention in Macon Wednesday include L. R. Adams J. W. Edwards Marvin Peed Jack Peed W. R. Turner B. F. Moore D. E. Byrd A. S. James H. S. Gates J. Ron Cooper Lewis Watson and Mrs. S. Garrett. Herman Talmadge slated for governor nomination alongside other state house officers after June primary majority.
Funeral was held July 26 for Mrs. Ida Ann Hogg 75 at Five Points. She died at her daughter Mrs. Mattie Stubbs’s home near Mauk where she resided. Rev. J. L. Whitley officiated. she is survived by two children Rainey Hogg of Columbus and Mrs. Mattie Stubbs of Mauk and several grandchildren.
Ellaville Mrs. Jo Reid Wall, 83, died at her home near Ellaville on July 26. Lifelong Schley County resident and Ellaville Baptist Church member. Widow of Eugena Wall. Survived by four daughters J J Peterson and C B Tanner in Tampa, Fred Winterlee in Tallahassee, Brown McLendon in Sumter County. three sons Don Wall, Reid in Dover, I H in Cocoa. Also 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Local pastor C W Hancock urges August as the church’s peak month for service. Butler Methodist Church plans a full day of activities led by T E Tante with Sunday school at 10, worship at 11 on “The Hidden Hungers of the Human Heart,” youth fellowship at 7, and evening service at 8 sponsored by the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
Mrs. Alma Simmons Hendrick age 59 widow of H. J. Hendrick of Macon county died unexpectedly at her home Wednesday July 26 from a heart attack. Funeral services were led by Rev. Coy Watson of Blakely with burial in Bethel cemetery. She is survived by two daughters Mrs. Howard Lowe and Mrs. Madison Lowe of Reynolds, three sons Clyde Woodroe and Johnnie B. Hendrick of Juniper, one sister Mrs. A. L. Lane of Juniper, one brother Willis Simmons of Macon, and nine grandchildren.
In Taylor county and Columbus the illness of Columbus Roberts Sr a 79 year old former politician founder of the Coca Cola Bottling Co in Columbus and retired businessman and farmer draws wide regret. He suffered a heart attack at his home Saturday and while Sunday slight improvement Monday showed more serious condition. He once served as Georgia commissioner of agriculture and has given over a million dollars to the Baptist church Mercer University and Bessie Tift College.
Funeral services were held at Crowell Methodist church in Taylor County for J. H. Jones 70 who died in Columbus after living in the area seven years. He spent most of his life in Taylor and Crawford counties and was the son of the late Win and Sallie Daniel Jones. Survivors include daughter Mrs J W Carroll Roberta a son James A Jones of Savannah seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
On Friday afternoon July 28 a head on collision on state highway 19 near the Central railroad crossing in Butler left H. E. Neisler of Taylor county and W. D. Tumlin of Atlanta state manager for Wofford Oil Co. injured. Both were unconscious at the scene and rushed to the local hospital where Neisler suffered severe head injuries and a dislocated right shoulder while Tumlin endured internal injuries and memory lapses.
Midway Baptist Church will observe Home-Coming Day on Sunday with 11:30 a.m. worship by the pastor, dinner at noon, and a 2:30 p.m. song and praise service. The day begins revival meetings with daily services through the week, 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., led by Pastor J. H. Stanford.
Church of the Nazarene hosts a five day program from 9 to 11 a.m. offering Bible reading singing art and craft work. Open to all boys and girls within several miles of Butler with encouragement for older residents to attend.
Thomaston Georgia Marion H Montgomery has been named business manager of the Georgia Review the University of Georgia monthly literary magazine Montgomery a graduate student at the University will begin duties August 1.
