The RCA Rodeo in Burnet showcased stock and cowboys with TV editorials highlighting live performances over replays. Burnet Bulldog Baseball won the district title by beating Marble Falls 2-1 and 9-2, earning regional championship under coach Robert Veach.
Burnet's first RCA Rodeo in over twenty years drew cowboys and cowgirls from across the U S for two nights of competition and $1 500 in prizes. Rusty Riddle claimed Bareback Bronc honors with 74 points, while Gail Petska and Janice Saunders led barrel racing and team roping events.
Memorial Day events in Burnet honor war dead with Colonel Thomas R. Parsons of Texas A&M as keynote speaker. Ramsey Clinton hosts the ceremony with music by Ft. Hood 2nd Armored Division Band and a Confederate Air Force flyover. Donations fund flowers for the monument. flowers may be delivered to the courthouse lawn May 30.
Burnet Consolidated Independent School District faced a drop in average daily attendance to a new low, cutting state funds and resulting in one fewer teacher for the 1975 76 year. Elementary and Junior High ran above 90 percent ADA while the High School fell to 88.65 percent. Two resignations were accepted, social studies teacher Robert Harsch citing health and Deborah Northcutt due to family moves. Charles Wareden was named to fill the unexpired board term. John Grissom reported 88.18 percent of current taxes collected and the district prepared a new delinquent tax schedule. A two year contract for Grissom as tax assessor collector was approved, salary $12,000 per year, August 31, 1975 to August 1977.
The board approves a cash basis only policy to cover unpaid balances and reduce a 13000 deficit. Patients referred for X rays or tests not fully covered by insurance must pay in full. the hospital will file claims without charge if paid, inviting reimbursements from insurers. Nursing pay scales to be studied and updated. Five RN openings announced alongside existing five.
Burnet County Commissioners Court met at 10 00 a m on May 16 to discuss the civil suit Travis C Griffin Jr et al v Gene Schilling et al filed in federal court regarding an incident.
The Burnet Open Tennis Tournament runs June 5 to 8 at Burnet High School courts with eight local courts plus nine more nearby. Juniors start at 9 am Thursday, entry deadline June 2 at 5 pm, entries by mail with check to Burnet Tennis Association.
Comptroller Bob Bullock issued 19.9 million in May city sales tax rebates to 700 of 809 eligible Texas cities. Payments reflect a shift from quarterly to monthly disbursements with June to bring in funds from April–May merchant returns.
A three day search by three patrol boats with grappling hooks failed to locate Joe Mixon of Austin after his boat capsized on Buchanan Lake during high winds. Michael Sharek and Leonard Patterson survived. Patterson reported life jackets aboard. Roger Hensley found Sharek’s body. the TPWD and multiple agencies continued the hunt before search was halted due to low visibility.
Shepperd Memorial Hospital School of Vocational Nursing sponsors a free screening for hypertension and hypotension as part of National Hypertension Month. Clinics run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 22 1975 in Bertram Farmers State Bank Burnet Marble Falls Home State Bank Kingsland Chamber of Commerce Buchanan Dam Cassie Community Center.
Burnet High School announces baccalaureate services on Sunday May 26 at Bryce Taylor Auditorium with Rev. Jim Brazzil scripture by Tamra Smith and sermon by Dan Shipley. Benediction by Rev. L C Johnston Jr precedes commencement on Saturday May 31 at 8 p.m. when 98 seniors receive diplomas.
