Burnet County Bulletin (Newspaper) - June 13, 1977, Burnet, Texas Burnet school Board to hear teacher at tuesday meeting Tennis lights decision May be reversed Burnet a special meeting of the Burnet consolidated Independent school District has been posted for 7 30 pm. Tuesday june 14 and will be held at the superintendents office at 308 e. Briar Street. The main purpose of the meeting will be an executive session audience with mrs. Patricia huckster an intermediate school teacher whose contract was not renewed by the school Board superintendent Wilkin said. Wilkin said that an item of concern will be a letter he received from Burnet City manager Jack Tippit pertaining to the lighting of the Tennis courts at the High school. Quot the letter from Tippit Indi Cates that the City is willing to pay for the electricity usage for a three month period a Wilkin stated. At the May Board meeting the Board approved entering into an agreement to contribute $3 000 towards the lighting of the school s Tennis courts with the Burnet Tennis association agree ing to put some $4,000 into the Effort. At that time the Board and Tennis association according to Wilkin understood that the City of Burnet had agreed to furnish the electricity at no Cost to the school or Tennis As Socie Tion for a five year period. Ken Wilson and Wally Lemore Are expected to appear before the Council to explain and discuss their refused request to change the zoning of the old Hammond House from r 1 to r 2. George Puckett owner of the historical Cook House at 200 n. Main Street has asked to be placed on the Council s Agenda to discuss his request that the property be rezoned from r 1 to c i commercial. The City zoning commission last tuesday denied Puckett s request unanimously. Both Puckett and Wilson met opposition from area residents at the recent zoning commission meeting. Although the majority of the zoning commission members commented that Quot Burnet needs additional housing of this Type Quot both Wilson and Puckett s requests were denied. Burnet City manager Jack Tippit stated that he Quot has suggested to the City Council that updating the land use plan be Quot i think we need additional zoning classifications and i anticipate that planning will be done to take care of this Quot said Tippit. Zoning administrator Bill Goble Friday said he Felt Burnet needs new zoning ordinances and added Quot we can t continue to group everything in one it May have been satisfactory at the time the zoning was done but the ordinances Are not adequate now a he said. Goble said he thought Burnet needs broader zoning ordinances. Royal Burton a member of the zoning commission was appointed to make a study of what could be done to broaden Burnet s coning for commercial uses Goble said. Burton said he has studied Austin s zoning plans and is trying to develop a workable solution for professional offices and Low traffic business developments in Burnet. Burton said he Hopes to have some suggestions ready for tuesday night s City Council meeting. Wally Lemore involved with the old Hammond House project said that he Quot is More interested in the development of Burnet than anything Quot i think Burnet definitely needs housing such As we propose. I have had Many requests for housing from teachers and professional people Quot he added. Dump truck i takes spill i i Driver Hurt i Burnet a a City of Burnet employee was slightly injured wednesday but the dump truck he was driving suffered a much worse Fate. The Brand new 1977 dump truck was totally destroyed when it flipped and rolled with a Load of Rock. Tim Mcgilvray Driver of the vehicle was heading Back to Burnet after loading the dump truck with a Load of Rock when he lost control of the truck and it flipped throwing him out of the truck. According to Steve Moreno Burnet police officer who investigated the Accident Quot the right wheels left the pavement on a curve near the intersection of Highway 963 and Shady Grove Road. Mcgilvray tried to fight the truck and Force the wheels Back onto the pavement for at least 400 Yards before the truck flipped and rolled. The damage to the new truck was very Mcgilvray was transported to Shepperd memorial Hospital where he was listed in Good condition with slight Back and Chest injuries. Of the legislature does t meet until the Middle of july we can be pressed for time in getting our budget prepared for the Board under our time deadline a Wilkin stressed he indicated that for the present time he and the Board intend to work under the guideline of the existing school seance Bill which was passed two years ago. Budgets tax rates and personnel schedules for the coming school year Are waiting the action of the legislature said Wilkin. Pogue. In reply to Clyde Griffin s recent Challenge to the business communities of Burnet and Marble Falls asking for an Effort to begin planning now to elect a new county judge and two commissioners in next year s primary elections Pogue stated that Quot he intends to be on the ticket in 1978 and invites Clyde Griffin and Marble Falls City manager Dick Zimmerman to join him on the Quot Griffin and Zimmerman Don t realize the Good the commissioners have done for the county in watching where our Money goes Quot said Pogue. Griffin stated recently that he Quot was critical of the fact that the county currently has $223,000 in certificates of deposits in different Banks which is not being used for the county s Many Pogue said that Quot just because we have the Money does t mean we should pay it Zimmerman had said he Quot agreed wholeheartedly with Griffin that it was time to meet the problems of a growing Burnet Griffin had also criticized the county ambulance service calling it inefficient outside of Burnet. Zimmerman has been before the commissioners before asking for better ambulance service for the county stating that Marble Falls did not have adequate ambulance service in the City or surrounding area. Pogue replied to the county ambulance situation by stating that Quot he did not think that Burnet county was in too bad of shape for ambulance service a and ment was serving the purpose and that the hiring of a professional Road Engineer was not necessary. Griffin had suggested reforming of the county government by hiring a professional Road Engineer to oversee All Road maintenance and paying such an individual with Money normally paid to county commissioners. In conjunction with the father s Day program the chamber will hold a Swap and shop Day in the Burnet town Square on june 18 the retail Trade committee of the chamber of Commerce is in charge of the father s Day poster and poem contest. There will be three separate divisions of the contest with Cash awards going to the winners. The divisions Are the elementary intermediate and High school. First place winners in each division will receive $5, second place winners will receive $3 and third place winners will be Given $2 All interested students Are urged to submit their father s Day poster to the local chamber of Commerce judging will take place on june 16 at the local chamber office. The posters will be displayed throughout Burnet in local businesses from june 12 to june 16. The last Day to submit a poster is june 16 according to Douglas Moses chairperson of the retail Trade committee of the Burnet Cham Ber of Commerce the response so far has been encouraging he went on to say that he expects a great response to the father s Day poster and poem contest. An All Day Swap and shop Day for local individuals will be held june 18 on the Burnet town Square no merchants will be allowed to participate in the Swap and shop Sale Only individuals will be permitted to enter the Sale.
