Congressman W. R. Poage urged trimming the food stamp program by half and placing able bodied recipients to work. He also called for ending revenue sharing and federal funding of education, while stating support for the truly needy at a Kiwanis meeting in Burnet.
Killeen businessman and rancher Stan Schlueter announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in State Representative District 43, challenging incumbent Camm Lary Jr. in Belton while Lary plans to seek re election. Schlueter is a Bell County native with a Baylor and North Texas State education.
Tommy Duncan of Kingsland filed as a candidate in spring school elections and expressed interest in a board appointment. Kingsland residents proposed Alberta Allred to replace Harvey Raab, who allegedly moved to Uvalde. The board will not fill the vacancy until Raab submits a written resignation, which was reportedly sent.
Burnet Consolidated Independent School District trustees weigh a one year extension for Superintendent Robert Wilkin citing undecided votes among board members. President E B Price backs two years but opposes three year terms. The meeting also reviews Booster Club stadium plans and voting-box locations.
Congressman W. R. Poage announced at a Kiwanis luncheon that he plans to seek re election for the 10th time. He noted he has represented Central Texas for 39 years and now chairs the House Agriculture Committee. Rotarian president Ohn Hoover said Poage will become the second most senior member once Wright Patman retires, highlighting his influence.
Burnet officials report Ken Warden will not seek re election to the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District Board, saying he lacks time. He was appointed in May to fill the unexpired term of Howard Adare and may reconsider. President E B Price and Roy Oakley also face April term expirations with uncertain plans for re election.
Burnet outscores Brady 64 52 on Brady court to start District 24AA play as Fry leads with 27 points and Collins joins him in double figures. Freshmen won 40 29 and JV 65 38 in earlier Burnet routs of district rivals.
The Concerned Citizens Organization for the handicapped of Burnet County plans a Feb 12 meeting to decide on joining the Texas Association of Retarded Citizens. The group set 1976 goals including expanding services, a transportation fund, workshop self sufficiency, and a membership drive. A TARC speaker will attend. call 756-6286 for details. Also reports season basketball results for Burnet and Brady, with district play upcoming.
