He replaces Jimmy Taylor whose resignation was accepted by the court effective the same Day. Willis has lived in Burnet county for the last five years and was born in Odessa. He is a fair and Rodeo association director chairman of the 4-h livestock show and Sale a committeeman for the soil conservation District and a member of the Burnet county development Board. Although Willis was sworn in monday afternoon he had not been bonded. Judge Pogue said that he expects the new commissioner to be bonded this week As soon As the paper work is completed. New county attorney Gene Stratton again met with the commissioners court and requested use of office space on the second floor of the courthouse which is presently being used Only two Days each month by the Farmers Home administration. He also asked that the commissioners Okay the employment of a secretarial assistant that Stratton said could be paid from t Federal underemployment Grant the commissioners okayed earlier in the Day. Larry Boyd a representative of manpower in the family planning office was granted approval by the commissioners for funding a program to employ unemployed and under employed persons in the county. A Boyd s plan Stratton said a will fund a secretarial salary. There is space available which is free and there Are funds available at no inconvenience. All you the commissioners have to do is approve the Federal funds. Stratton spoke to the commissioners for nearly an hour outlining his requests reasons behind them and simple solutions. The new county attorney added that he would in addition to the space and a Secretary need some office equipment. Stratton said that he would need a two line rotary Telephone dictation equipment a desk and chair for himself a table and several chairs to use for conferences and a desk and chair for his Secretary if the court allows him to hire one. After considerable discussion the commissioners told Stratton that if he would prepare and present to them at the Jan. 24 meeting a Price list of equipment they would then consider buying the merchandise and allowing Horn to use the upstairs office space. The Burnet county historical commission directors were appointed monday for two year terms. Representatives from the historical society named to the commission Are mrs. Bill Bryson Virgil Lewis Mary Borders and fran Norman from precinct 1, Jimsey Husted Laverne Roach and Darrell Debo from precinct 2, mrs. Floyd Smith Julu Hasty and mrs. Ona Glimp from precinct 3, Garrett Wilkerson Edward White and Willie Mae Price and from precinct 4, Howard counts Iva Fuller and Linda Ross. Acting on a written request from the Buchanan dam Volunteer fire department the commissioners voted to allow the fire department to Cross the Bridge Over inks Lake into Burnet county to handle fires in that area. He said earlier that he was certain the court would give permission because the Buchanan dam fire department can get to fires in the Cassie subdivision area before the Burnet fire department can get to Lucky a co Mer. In other action commissioners let depository bids for county and school funds and for Oil and Gas supplies. They also approved the replacing of lots in Buena Vista subdivision owned by Don Bryant. The City of Burnet is in the Security and Protection business As a middleman distributing alarm systems and protective devices if local businessmen chose to take advantage of the City councils tuesday night decision. By a three two vote for Alderman George. James e Fry s motion the Council said it was a willing to act As a vehicle and extend its buying Power police authority to interested merchants for Security services and protective devices if sufficient interest is expressed. Seconded by Alderman Howard Benton and supported by aldermen dare Cowan and Fry the motion passed despite the reservation of and no votes form aldermen Richard Sanders and Bill Wilcox. Burnett the Shepperd memorial Hospital Board of directors agreed at their tuesday night meeting to approve Active staff status for or. . Cummins of Burnet. Or. Cummins joined the staff of Allen clinic in november and until the Board meeting Only had the temporary approval to use the Hospital. He was however granted full surgical use of Shepperd facile both Sanders and Wilcox expressed concern about the City of Burnet going into the Security business and acting As a merchant for Security devices the action came As the result of a proposal by a Burnet citizen Harry Kaindl who said there is no alternative to the City s Effort if local merchants Are to have adequate Security available to them at reasonable prices. Kaindl explained there Are no licensed authorized Security firms in the City which can offer Security services but that the City can because of its police authority the move came after lengthy discussion and a presentation of available alarm systems by representatives of the silent watchmen corporation of Columbus Ohio. In other action the directors heard a request from the Community action Agency to rent an office area in the Hospital. Company explained they could sell the alarm systems at a 40 percent discount to the City which could then make the systems and services available to local merchants while local merchants would have to pay the full retail prices if they were to Purchase the alarms from a Security firm the Council failed to wit decisively on two other major Agenda items which will be discussed and presumably acted on in a special meeting of the Council set for Jan. 25. At that time the aldermen will consider proposed Gas rate increases proposed by the Lone Star Gas company and the proposed annexation of some 31 75 acres near the 101 acre Industrial Park. A Public hearing on the annexation matter had been set for Oay. The annexation petition which includes Jam end Kas subdivisions and part of Hayes addition adjoining the City limits was presented to the City by Cliff bibles and other residents in late november and a Public hearing was held at the dec. 14 Council meeting. Led by Jack Barrier who owns 20 acres of land in the area to by annexed the protesting property owners presented their own petition with 19 names against the annexation and argued that Bible s petition contains the names of persons no longer reel Ding in the ares. The original petition lists 17 for annexation six against and four abstaining. 1 Don t want to be in the City limits and i want the right to take a vote in the area Barrier said. Zimmerman cited a supreme court Case in which it was ruled that a petition and vote carry the same weight in annexation proceedings. Barrier said that he has a paid City taxes All my life and he does not want to pay taxes to the City of Marble Falls. A Why Are you so ant i Marble Falls asked Alderman Dwayne Michel. A you want to share in the Community s benefits but you Don t want to loin us a i Don t want to share Barrier said. I want to be left atone a is paid enough taxes he added that he constructed his own streets and lights on his properly and has maintained them without help from the City. Mayor Dean Chafee pointed out that the City did not seek out the petition to Annex the 40 Acrea but was taking action on a a certified document which has gone through the Correct channels. This petition is notarized and contains a majority of qualified voters and we accept it in Good Faith Zimmerman said. He explained that according to state Law the ree Deate in the area Are qualified voters even though they May not own on the property they Are living on. Mrs. Laketon Smith who owns seven sores asked the of Runolf Smo annexation Pogo a tuesday night but no one from the audience addressed the Issue and the Council delayed action. Jesse Johnson local manager for Lone Star Gas appeared before the Council seeking actions on the proposed rate hike but Council members noted they had recently suspended the rate increases for 120-Day period and tabled the matter. In other action the Council authorized about 02,800 for improvements to the City water system which will include approximately 300 feet of six Inch line in the area of Valley Street and an offer to extend City water to residents outside the City limits a requested for a fee of 0350. The work outside the City will involve a two Inch line on mormon Mill Road
