Poppy Day Sale Totals 1200 Poppies Sold Here

Winnebago Unit No. 21 of The American Legion Auxiliary met at City Hall on Thursday evening June 3. The group reported funds from Poppy Day May 29 totaled 133.60 with 1200 poppies sold. New officers were elected and prizes awarded to top sellers Judy Beyer Gerald Hartman and Francis Bruhns.

Special Prizes For Baby Contest At State Fair

Iowa fairs officials announce special prizes for the statewide Baby Health Contest at the State Fair August 27 to September 3. Twenty six medals and trophies will go to last year’s contestants in the 24 to 36 month class whose 1948 scores show the greatest improvement from 1947. A total of 500 dollars in awards will be given across 27 classes for boys and girls. city town and rural youngsters compete separately. Within each section prizes go to a winning one year old boy and girl and two-year-old boy and girl. grand champion trophies and a highest scoring twins trophy will also be awarded. Improvement scores compare 1948 with 1947. six improvement classes will award four medals each, with boy and girl improvement champions receiving trophies. Examinations start 8 a.m. daily. premiums awarded Friday September 3. Entries must be filed by August 11 with State Fair Secretary L B Cunningham, Des Moines.

Predict Brisk Demand For Meat This Summer

Rex Beresford of Iowa State College told Winnebago County farmers at Thompson town hall on June 8 that the demand for fresh meat should rise through the summer, the strongest since 1935. He warned prices may not spike but are likely to move upward in coming months, with a price drop not expected for 18 to 30 months. He urged each farmer to plan a rotation that fits his farm while maintaining livestock to use available feed.
