Legion Sends Two Juniors to Boys State

Kent Winter and Jack Fredericks, Buffalo Center High juniors, will attend Hawkeye Boys State June 6 to 18. Winnebago Post No 21 funds their stay at Camp Dodge Des Moines area. The camp emphasizes citizenship and government study with nonpartisan, mythical parties Federalists and Nationalists.

War On Flies Begins In Buffalo Center Area

A city-wide effort to stamp out flies in Buffalo Center, sponsored by the Buffalo Center Business Men’s Club, will launch next week. The plan, backed by the City Fly Control Committee, aims to make the community fly free this summer with broad cooperation across business and residential districts.

Federated Clubs to Have Annual Picnic June 8th

The County Federation of Women's Club will hold its annual picnic Tuesday June 8 at Leeland West Prairie Lutheran Church hosted by Neils Community Club. A noon picnic dinner precedes a program with music, a speaker Mrs. Clark Mechem, garden talk on flower arrangements, parliamentary lesson, introductions, plant and slip exchange, and a club project display with judging by Mrs. H E Woodward. Bring plants wrapped for transplanting and pennies nickels dimes for purchases. Please bring own dishes and silver.

Rex Beresford to Speak at Thompson Tonight

Rex Beresford a livestock specialist at Iowa State College will speak at the Town Hall in Thompson Thursday evening June 3 about the livestock situation and outlook. The public is invited to attend. A few Shirley Cabinet Links arrived at John and Jerrys this week.

Camp Week Climax Promised by June 13 Meals

The note urges all boys to stay in camp until the last meal on Sunday June 13. Skipping early will miss the week's climax. Seven good speakers and varied programs are planned to keep all boys engaged.

Thompson Ball Team Nips Bison 2 to 1

The Thompson baseball team defeated the Bison 2 to 1 at Buffalo Center. Albers pitched well for the Bison, limiting Thompson to eight hits while Thompson’s Nolte yielded five safeties. The visitors scored two unearned runs, setting up a matchup at Forest City against Marv Elman’s Indians on June 6.

Regular Meeting Tonight at Winnebago Post 21

The American Legion Post 21 in Winnebago holds a regular meeting tonight Thursday June 3. Candidates for post offices will be selected and officers elected at the July meeting to represent at the State Convention in August. Former Buffalo Center people employed at Vanport City Ore gon fled as floodwaters swept in. Families including Harolds Winters Haagers Van Hoorns Johnsons Smiths Hammes escaped with their lives sending word they lost all belongings. The Vanport flood is described as the NW’s largest disaster, destroying much in its path.

Body of William Jurgens Arrives for Burial in Buffalo Center

The body of William Jurgens the first Buffalo Center boy to die in World War II is due to arrive Saturday June 5. He was the son of Mrs Jeanette Jurgens. Private family services will be held at Schutter Son Funeral Home Monday afternoon June 7 at two o'clock. A military burial will be provided by the Kingsbury Jurgens Veterans of Foreign Wars Post named for William Jurgens and Russell Kingsbury.

Juanita Wessels Is Buffalo Center Band Queen Candidate

Juanita Wessels, senior at Buffalo Center high school, chosen by students as band festival queen candidate for Miss North Town at Masan City on June 22. Amid 28 entries, she contributes to school’s 60-piece band, performs in glee club and sextet, and plans Luther College attendance.

Voters Face Primary June 7 in Winnebago County

Voters will go to the polls Monday June 7 to choose nominees for governor secretary of state and other offices. The Republican slate features Beardsley for governor Blue for governor and eight candidates for secretary of state among many races for county supervisors and state posts. Polls open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with both major parties fielding numerous nominations in a wide array of offices.
