Rock of Ages Hymn Birth From Theological Debate
The origin story of Rock of Ages traces a wart of theological sparring between Arminian John Wesley and Calvinist August Toplady. Toplady, London editor of The Gospel Magazine, argued against sinless living and for grace. In 1776 he penned Spiritual Improvement and the National Debt, ending with a poem that became the hymn Rock of Ages, surviving the era's disputes and echoing through time.
