Unanimous Choice Elevates Walton to A. and M. Presidency

T. O. Walton, long time Director of the Extension Service, was elected president of the A. and M. College of Texas. The board vote was unanimous. Walton rose from farm work to state agent and administrator, earning statewide respect for his ability to recruit and lead staff and align Extension with the college.

Rev J J Tatum is home after a two month absence spent in revivals. He preached in Panola county Texas and Ashland City Tennessee plus Clay county Texas and reports 50 to 75 additions to the church. He notes strong corn and tobacco crops and a brief fishing trip before returning to Brazos county.

Revered Sholl Reports Pikes Peak Summit Day Trip

Rev William N Sholl writes from the top of Pikes Peak 14 110 feet praising the clear weather with no snow after thirty five years. He notes 37 degrees and a frozen lake nearby while enjoying the grand scenery and cold hands while writing. Those who reached the summit expect snow yet find sunny conditions.

Men of the Church Gather for Evening Fellowship

The Men of the Church met Tuesday night in the Sunday School annex for a supper assisted by Mrs. S. C. Hoyle Mrs. Nellie Stephens and Mrs. Elon Stuart. The group sang and listened to minutes read then heard cornet and saxophone performances by J. Bryan Miller and Henry Locke with Mrs. Roy Danforth.

Dallas Couple Arrives in Bryan To Make Home

Mr and Mrs T H Helm of Dallas have arrived in Bryan to establish residence and are staying with Mrs L H Tucker. Mr Helm works in the print shop at College. Mr and Mrs M B Easters visit from their Kurten area farm today.

Astin House Fire Causes Loss At Roger Q. Astin Home

A Friday night blaze damaged the residence of Roger Q. Astin causing several hundred dollars in damage. Firefighters responded and controlled the fire with no injuries reported.

An electric iron sparked a blaze in the sewing room upstairs at the Astin residence on West 26th street. Residents were alerted by Mrs. Astin, and firefighters arrived quickly with a 100 percent crew to extinguish the fire. Insurance covered the house and contents.

Cotton Bales Moved to Bryan Warehouses Saturday

Over 3,000 bales of cotton were brought to Bryan warehouses by Saturday night. Lawrence warehouse reported 1,760 bales, Farmers' Union 1,870, Eden's Gin round bales 840, counting rounds as half.

Barbecue Driven by St Joseph Fund Draws Big Crowd

Luza's pasture hosted a Labor Day barbecue led by Frank Braczyk and Frank Zubic's committee to raise funds for St Joseph's Parochial School. Meals sold 50c with meat, pickles, cake and bread. Dozens of stands offered soft drinks and ice cream as hundreds attended.

Burglary at Tremont Feed Store Drills Hole in Safe

The Tremont Feed Store suffered a forced entry Saturday night or Sunday morning with $1 100 90 in cash and checks taken apart from a $125 40 cash. The safe was a Victor model 54 by 34 inches drilled through its bottom to gain access. No clues or suspicions emerged and related thefts at local businesses were noted. Sheet Metal Buildings Banned Within City Fire Limits

A letter from G M Holton, secretary of the State Fire Insurance Commission, explains that buildings within Bryan's fire limits must have walls of stone brick terra cotta concrete or equivalent noncombustible material. Metal frame and sheet iron walls do not meet the standard and may fail in a fire.

Vacant Bryan House of Mrs Paul Ruchti Burned Down

A vacant five room house owned by Mrs Paul Ruchti near Allen Academy in Bryan burned to the ground Sunday evening causing an estimated $1,800 loss. The house was unoccupied as Mrs Ruchti had moved to Ausin less than a month earlier. Firemen arrived after 8:10 pm to find walls falling in and laid 1,150 feet of hose to reach the hydrant. Insurance covered about $1,000 of the dwelling loss. furniture loss is listed at $200 to $300 with no insurance.
