The American Legion Prep County Fair returns for a three day run at the Legion grounds in Bryan and Brazos County. The column urges all residents to attend to support education and agricultural improvement through county exhibits and programs.
Mrs. Laura Kestler and daughter Vallie visit Rock Prairie with Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Barron while Mrs. Barron and Mrs. Kestler are sisters. Dr. and Mrs. Roy Russell of Fort Worth guest with Pr. and Mrs. Lamar Jones. Mrs. James Godwin improves after hospitalization. Miss Billy Lee and Miss Corene Lebrecht of Marlin visit Mrs. Bertha Edinburg for Aggie-T. C. U. game. T. M. Kerbow of Greenville, former Sulphur Springs chamber secretary, visits Bryan and chats with Mr. Eberstadt.
Robert Etheredge of Bryan school receives a new American Fly bicycle from Haswell Book Store. His sister drew the winning number and Robert enjoyed the bike with easy balance once adjusted.
A Hearne fire destroyed the southwest shed of the National compress, owned by Madden interests, damaging between 1200 and 1400 bales of cotton. The origin is undetermined. most cotton was in storage and insured. Reports reached Bryan via R. E. Squeeps of the Southern Pacific Lines.
Ka Graham Post No. 159 American Legion plans a flag display in the business district to promote the American Legion Free Brazos Canty Fair opening Thursday and running the last three days of the week.
Rev George Stewart pastor of the Hempstead Baptist Church states the church has joined the Creath Bragzos Association. The association includes nearby churches along the Brazos River such as Bryan Madisonville and Navasota.
The New York Times reports Governor Franklin D Roosevelt will oppose immediate cash payment of the soldiers bonus in a Pittsburgh address. He is expected to tie the stance to a broader veterans relief program and criticize Hoover administration policies, with remarks on removing bonus seekers from Washington. Albany officials have not commented.
F C Kubin of the Pitts Bridge community died after a long illness at the family farm. Born in Czecho Slovakia May 10 1879 he was 53 last May. Survived by widow a son John Kubin daughter Eleen Kubin mother Mrs Mary Kubin three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services Sunday at Queen at 4 o'clock at the family home with Rev J B Gliessner officiating and at 4 30 p m at Smetana cemetery for interment.
County Judge A S McSwain departed Monday for Galveston to join the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association meeting. Commissioner Guy S Boyett and his companions Dallas Watson Lonnie Fuqua two highway machinery operators from College Station also attended the gathering.
A Friday intrusion by John Reagan high school supporters into Bryan led to seven youths jailed overnight. Police reported later break ins at Forrest Field Field House with theft of clothes jewelry and money from Stephen F. Austin high students.
Rotarian C N Shepardson presided at the New York Cafe luncheon on The Less Fortunate. Mrs A J Buchanan reviewed local Red Cross efforts, clothing and food aid, 1200 Red Cross gardens, and planned drives starting November 11 to help all overcome winter hunger and cold.
A midnight fire and explosion damaged the C. and 8. Confectionery on North Main street. Fire officials suspect a back draft caused the blast which shattered a front plate glass window and door. Night Watchman S. E. Locke witnessed the flare after passing the store. James Scarmardo and Joe Accurso operated the business. building owned by W. I. McCulloch. Insurance covers all damage.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at 3 p.m. for Jwe. W. Sylvester a World War veteran and member of Earl Graham Post American Legion of Bryan with military honors. Rev. Ed J. Harris officiated at the residence four miles north of Bryan. interment followed at Bryan City Cemetery. He was 40 years old. Survived by a widow, father J. S. Sylvester, one brother and five sisters.
Plans are underway for a poultry show and home products exposition to be held late in November in the city auditorium. J H W Taylor, vocational agriculture teacher, and his class will handle details. Home made articles canned fruits and vegetables meats textiles and more will be displayed.
Bryan Federation of Young People's Societies cabinet met at First Baptist with Heber Stewart presiding to set the program for the next public meeting at College Avenue Baptist on October 23 at 3 30 p m The box supper at Sue Haswell Park on Thursday at 7 30 p m funds the basketball league equipment with girls bringing lunch boxes and boys bringing money for boxes Two cakes and candy will be sold for the fund and contests add to the event
W. M. Harmon state representative from McLennan county was in Bryan on the way to Houston and discussed the speakership race for the 40th Legislature. Harmon leads the effort for Rep. Coke R. Stevenson of Kimble county and said prospects were bright as Stevenson gained ground. In Bryan he consulted with Rep. Fritz Engle hard of Eagle Lake, a Stevenson backer.
Brazos County commissioners burn 150000 in highway bonds totaling 518983.65 to seek reimbursement from the Board of District Road and County Indebtedness for state highway construction costs. Judge A S McSwain and officials plan to file the claim, with Roy Montgomery observing the bonfire.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 p.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bryan for Mrs. Annie Cimento wife of Frank Cimento who died Friday at 4 50 p m after a brief illness. Rev B Brain conducted the rites at the church and the Bryan Catholic cemetery burial followed. Born January 1 1904 in Brazos County she lived in Bryan all her life. She was 78 years 9 months 11 days old. Surviving are her husband two daughters Lena and Bennie Cimenio her father Brogie Liece two brothers and three sisters Paul and Peter Licce of Brazos County Mrs Jessie D Antonio and Mrs Lena Consulo both of Bryan and Mrs Mary Dechario of New Orleans.
Virkle Lee Hines and Dorothy Townsend, two African American women, were jailed Saturday night in connection with two cutting affrays in Brazos County. Each allegedly cut or stabbed a man, though no serious injuries were reported.
A 4 H Club Achievement Day event at Prospect featured Mrs. P. K. Trant hosting a pantry demonstration with canned vegetables fruits relishes and meats. The home atmosphere and neat organization impressed visitors including Prospect Club president Mrs. Steele McDonald and speaker Mrs. D J McDonald who spoke on adequate diet and farm sources.
Mesdames M. M. Erskine and M. R. Bentley of Bryan Chapter No. 222 plan to attend the Texas Grand Chapter O E S Golden Jubilee in Fort Worth October 25 to 27. The event marks 50 years of the Texas Grand Chapter with an expected 4 000 attendees and statewide membership of 60 000 to 65 000. Erskine will serve as Bryan Chapter legal representative and Bentley will join the Grand Chapter voting group as past matron.
The October district court term closes with several cases to be heard before adjournment. The most notable is the state’s murder case against Wayne Davis over the shooting of his son in law Willie Lovell, with trial set for Oct 20 after previous delays due to illness and family reasons.
A pot of blazing tar used for roof repairs on the Dansby building occupied by Montgomery Ward Company sparked a fire department response on Monday. No damage occurred.
Members of the Texas Managing Editors plan a fall meeting in Bryan and College Station on November 20 and 21. James R. Record, Fort Worth Star Telegram managing editor and organization president, announced the schedule with sessions set at 10 a.m. on November 20 and 9 p.m. on November 21. A planned entertainment option is a Sunday chicken barbecue.
Three major Texas oil companies visited the J. C. Barnett well at Iola after cementing the casing on Tuesday. Cement will set over a week before plans to bring the well in. The site has drawn attention from oil men statewide, including Pop Joiner. Barnett and J. L. Edge journalist optimism accompanies a discovery of oil in the final drilling stage with initial flow filling the ditch.
Miss Willie Rogers of the Carnegie Public Library warns that borrowers are responsible for books until checked in. Books may be left on the counter during lending hours but at the borrower's risk. The stack room operates 9 30 a m to noon and 2 to 530 p m.
Miss Emma Regmund Miss Julia Holick and Miss Geraldine Gilpin left Bryan for the Texas State Fair in Dallas where each earned a trip as a garden and yard demonstration winner and all around worker. They join regional representatives and depart with Miss Opal Robinson and Miss Bonnie Cox from Harris and Jackson counties for a week long encampment through Friday.
Judge W C Davis grants Hearne Lumber Company petition to certify an account owed by J H and H O Collier of Mumford. Their business in the hands of a receiver Mills P Walker for payment when funds are available.
Leland H. Knight leads a Church of Christ meeting at Benchley starting Wednesday night October 19 replacing the initial Tuesday start. The multi day revival will continue for several days, likely two weeks or more, with nightly services in the early days and open to the public.
The fourth annual free fair by Earl Graham Post No 159 opens Thursday for three days on Legion grounds. New Fine Arts department invites amateur and professional Brazos county artists with ribbons for winners. Exhibits from 4-H and community clubs emphasize agriculture and school progress, with nightly plays by local schools and clubs.
Mr and Mrs Henry Regmund Sr and Mr and Mrs Hentry Regmund Jr with relatives from Corpus Christi attended the funeral of their uncle William Rubin at Riverside on Sunday.
