Dwight Hearne of Houston, living in Bryan while working as a comptometer operator at A and M College, fell critically ill and underwent emergency appendectomy at Hotel Brazos. He is reported resting well at Bryan Hospital. Mrs George Robinson and daughter Nellie Gordon Robinson of Galveston attended the funeral of a husband and father in Bryan Monday. Jess Smith of Teague, a local druggist, is in Bryan for a citywide druggist convention at City Hall.
The Brazos Valley Cotton Cooperative mailed 1565 checks on Wednesday to its members. Secretary-treasurer Tom Field says the checks, whose total amount is not disclosed, reflect a dividend on business through June 1 and cover earnings on cotton from one bale up to 500.
Final claims for World War I veterans bonus must be filed before January 1, 1955 per Mrs. Albert Buchanan. Eligible veterans served sixty days or more between April 6, 1917, and November 12, 1918. If a veteran died before applying, widow or dependents may apply. January 1, 1936 is the limit for all applications of this nature.
The Cen tral Texas Druggists Association gathered in Bryan at the Municipal building with E J Jenkins welcoming visitors. Mayor N A Stewart outlined events including a banquet and dance at the Municipal Club house and an Aggieland Orchestra performance. Out of town registrants listed include Jess E Smith Matt P Bucy Olin A Pierce S Lipscomb Tom Taylor Val Horn and Gordon Mackey among others.
Miss Ida Parker of Bryan is confined to her bed at her east 29th street home with severe pain after a Tuesday night fall while returning from the Presbyterian church. She slipped from the sidewalk to the pavement as she carried church articles and started to her car. X ray exams showed no broken bones.
Miss Margaret Beason daughter of Mr and Mrs C L Beason and a Stephen F Austin high school graduate was elected to Alpha Phi Sigma an honor fraternity for high school freshmen and sophomores of top rank by grades membership limited to valedictorians and salutatorians or highest students.
The United States Bureau of Public Roads approved pavement on Highway No. 6 from the Grimes county line north to five miles south of College Station as part of 41 projects under the 1935 recovery program. The Texas Highway Department announced the $4,800,000 program, with bids to be requested at the November highway commission meeting and work to begin in December, Brazos county project leading the list.
Four airway routing beacon lights on the Galveston Waco Airway have been turned on. The new airway, funded by Public Works Administration and constructed by the Bureau of Air Commerce, should have all beacons active by end of October. Existing lights are at Wellborn, Bryan, Highbank, and Guda with others at Lemarque, League City, Satsuma, Hockley, and Hammond. Intermediate landing fields at Navasota and Hammond are to be ready within three months.
The Smetana 4-H club met at the school house to elect officers. Ella Mae Holik was chosen president, Lillie Mae Harbarta vice president, Ruby Kre secretary, Ethel Franklin reporter. Ruby Kre and Ella Mae Holick named song and yell leaders with a committee task assigned to Ruby Kre Julia Regmund and Lillie Mae Harbarta. Thirteen girls joined including Annie Mae Turek Mary Kalnec Julia Regmund Mildred Lucky Millie Hanus and Mary Harvon.
A tropical typhoon hits Manila causing at least ten deaths and about 3,000 houses unroofed or blown down. Five people drown and about 1,000 left homeless as at least four ships driven ashore in Manila Bay. Estimated losses reach up to 2.5 million dollars.
Frank Boriskie came back to Bryan from St Louis after a Texas group toured Purina mills and the Purina experimental farm at Gray's Summit. The 330 acre farm tests feed formulas under average conditions with units for calves cows cattle hogs poultry turkeys dogs foxes and rabbits.
The C A Baptists will begin construction of a second Sunday School annex east of the College Avenue church. The wooden building, 22 by 46 feet, will sit on the vacated garage site and be ready by the first Sunday in November. It will add 51 classrooms across the church and both annexes with about 800 seats.
Two year old son of Mr and Mrs Will Pressnal of the Tabor community fell from the porch at the family home Monday. He was taken to Wilkerson clinic in Bryan for x ray and treatment. The femur between hip and knee was broken. He received surgical attention and is resting easily at this time.
The Texas Highway Commission authorized 875000 dollars for half the cost of a two story brick office building to be erected in Bryan. An option on land facing Highway 6 connects to the department’s warehouse. Bryan Brazos County Chambers of Commerce and city funds will cover the rest.
More than 1,000,000 cans of meat are stored and distributed to relief recipients in Brazos Grimes Austin Leon Washington Robertson Walker Milam Houston Burleson Madison counties. Over 500,000 stored in the old cotton warehouse with 1,500 cans packed daily, 24 per carton under J. E. Covey. Additional stock in the C SL Eden warehouse and county jail. Inspectors report high quality and minimal spoilage, with Bryan and Sugar Land noted for best spoilage records.
Mio Krag alias Sylvester Malny alias Chalny confessed to being sent to Marseille with Petrus Kaleman to assassinate King Alexander of Yugoslavia. Kaleman Vlada Georgieff, Macedonian revolutionary leader, killed the King and was killed by police. Krag claimed he fled before the attack to avoid harming others.
The Lions Club held a noon meeting and presented chevrons to F D Fuller J Coulter Smith and Dr Lamar Jones for ten years of membership. Frank Anderson advised health education stressing water intake annual physicals and weight control. The club voted to maintain a booth at the American Legion Free Fair November 4 to 10.
Texas senate committees favor a Lower Colorado River Authority bill to develop with a 4.5 million dollar PWA loan for flood control and hydro power. A Brazos River project bill seeking a 50 million dollar PWA grant and loan for watershed conservation advances, but faces unfavorable reports in the Senate.
New Jersey Attorney General Wilentz told Justice Hammer that the Lindbergh ransom notes prove Hauptmann wrote them and was in the baby's room the night of the kidnapping. Handwriting expert Albert Osborn testified the Haus Hauptmann writing matched the notes with reasonable certainty.
McAllen Oct 16. Workmen completed a slush pit under orange trees at Engleman Gardens north of town. The Mc Collum Exploration Co. No 1 John C Engleman is a new wild cat well amid a fine orange grove in Mestenas tract Hidalgo county.
George Gibbs, colored, found guilty of murdering Nolan Green, colored, in district court and given a five year suspended sentence. The jury returned the verdict about 11 o clock Thursday night.
The October meeting of the T. E. L. Class of the First Baptist Sunday school met Thursday at 3 p m at the home of Mrs J A Williams on south College avenue. Mrs Geo Foster presided and Mrs P G Gunter led the devotion. Hosts served chicken salad olives crackers cake and Russian tea after business and social time.
Herbert Williams indicted for murder in the shooting of Bud McGee was continued until February 27 by Judge W. C. Davis. Williams is confined at home by a serious illness per a certificate from Dr. R. M. Searcy.
Charles Lindbergh told the Presidents aviation commission the blacklist of former airline executives is a major discouragement. He cited the post office rule barring old airmail officers from office after contract reorganizations. Farley linked the blacklist to the spoils conference tied to Brown, who arranged the conference to split up all airmail contracts.
United States Steamboat Service board of inquiry releases a preliminary report charging Captain William Warms and four staff officers including Chief Engineer Eben Abbott Second Officer Clarence Hackney Third Officer Harold Hansen and First Assistant Engineer Antoni Buija with negligence in the Morro Castle fire and loss of 132 lives. The report provides no cause or responsibility for the blaze.
The U S farm administration reported Texas rental and benefit payments total $59 818 355 as of September 1 1947 with cotton accounts leading the state 55 567 670 against a national 152 903 561. Brazos County alone shows 241 444 28 from cotton. Other area counties differed, Washington state recorded 151 633 30 while excluding some counties from the list.
Civil cases without juries were heard by Judge W. C. Davis in district court. Thursday the Morton R. Burkhalter versus C. T. English et al case goes to trial after one continuance. Burkhalter seeks $50,000 after his arm was severed in a collision with a truck. Henderson Hoyle share counsel for the plaintiff. Armstrong and Armstrong represent the defendants.
