Eastern Star Hosts Grand Officers in Bryan Chapter Event

The Bryan Chapter No. 222 welcomed Grand Matron Mrs. Norton By Wellborn and Grand Patron Senator T. J. Holbrook during a formal visit on October 13. Attendees came from Bryan, College Station, Calvert, Navasota, Iola, Bedias and nearby chapters. The evening featured decorations, a sessions and addresses, a short program, and a banquet for about 200 guests.

Methodist Woman's Missionary Society Meeting on Monday

The First Methodist church society held group meetings at members homes. Group 3 at Mrs. L. E. Bailey Cedar Crest reported 43 sick and stranger visits 60 Bible chapters read 13 members present and $66 in dues with Rev. H. C. Willis and guests in attendance. Group 5 at Mrs. A. D. Graham enjoyed a fall themed session with lesson Upward the Trail to Japan 190 chapters read 19 visits recorded and a social half hour with chocolate ice cream and cake.

Surprise Birthday Party for 91st Natal Day at Fountain

Mrs. W. W. Smith celebrated her 91st birthday at her Fountain home with a surprise visit from children, grandchildren, and neighbors. Guests arrived quietly Sunday morning bearing baskets of food and gifts, and a noon dinner honored the matriarch with family friends from Caldwell Milano Bryan and Fountain present.

Government's Ginning Report for Brazos County

Methodist Missionary Society Meeting at College

The Methodist Missionary Society met at the college Monday afternoon with Mrs. C. O. Watkins. Mrs. F. A. Beuchel led a discussion on the first chapter of the new book. Present were Mesdames Wayne Fredericks, D. F. Harrison, F. A. Beuchel, C. O. Watkins, Jennie Yates, G. P. Grout, J. L. McKee, and W. A. Stone.

Bryan Chamber of Commerce Holds Short Session

President John M. Lawrence presided as the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce board met. Reports covered district road work toward the Democratic crossing, advertising efforts, enforcement of a begging ordinance, Kurten Fair plans, and fire prevention talks at East and West Side schools.

Radio concert draws crowd in Smetana streets

C EF Griesser and wife staged a free radio concert at the Smetana schoolhouse front steps. A large outdoor audience heard music after static cleared late evening. Prof. Dixon L Turner leads plans to buy a radio set for community gathering and to form a community club.

Lions Club Program Highlights At Bryan Episcopal Parish House

The Bryan Lions Club met in the parish house dining room with M. M. Erskine leading a fine program. Miss Gussie Ballerstedt and Mary Beth plus Catherine Mitchell sang and read with humor and emotion. Flowers sent to Miss Ralphanna Searcy at Bryan Hospital. T. A. Munson spoke on road work and traffic impacts of motor progress. Attendees included numerous local residents and Dr. Searcy expresses gratitude for the club’s kindness.

First Conference Academy Faces Dallas in Open Conference Opener

Mexican Attacked Miss Etta Peters Saturday Night

Miss Etta Peters was assaulted on North Bryan Street near the Hearne road between 8 and 9 PM on Saturday as she walked home from her dressmaking office. A Mexican assailant tried to drag her toward a ravine before fleeing toward the ice plant. Three witnesses were unable to identify the culprit despite briefings to Miss Peters.

Eleven Head of Horses From A and M College Exhibit

Culberson Urges Democrats to Back Straight Ticket

In a telegram to E A Berry chairman of the State Democratic executive committee former Senator Charles Culberson says Democrats should support the straight ticket for both state and national races including Mrs Ferguson as governor nominee in the coming election. He cites opposition within the party and Republicans aiming to defeat the state ticket and hurt the national ticket’s majority.

Tick Fever Hits Brazos County Cattle Losses Rise

Brazos County records show extensive losses from fever ticks after court dropped tick eradication work last April. Of 41 herds totaling 2326 cattle, 342 head showed tick presence. 21 carloads, 872 head, were shipped to Fort Worth last month. Losses over six weeks total 75 to 100 head, with notable declines in Millican Riverside and Conlee.

Western Public Service to buy Bryan municipal plant

A Colorado company plans a central Bryan power plant within a fifty mile radius to supply Bryan and nearby towns. It would buy the Bryan Light and Power Plant after an audit and valuation, then seek voter approval on the sale. Payroll and local purchases would total about 60 000 annually, boosting Bryan’s economy if approved.

Watthuber No 1Oil Well Near Bryan Faces Big Prospects

The Bryan Petroleum Company’s Watthuber No 1 oil well, 2.5 miles south of A and M College, is drilling at 800 feet in gumbo with similar strata to the Putz well drilled 12 years ago. H. L. Lewis of the Danciger outfit reports 500 onlookers saw gas and oil at Putz, while Watthuber No 1 sits about 500 feet northeast of Putz.

A historical survey shows 79 percent of U S farm acreage bought, 15 3 percent inherited, 3 8 percent by marriage, and 2 4 percent other means with regional variation.
