The Brazos county American Legion Free Fair, opening November 4 for four days, showcases farm and home exhibits. In its eighth year the event has grown with permanent buildings and broader displays, stimulating rural effort and spreading valuable farming information for the county.
Dr. P. C. Mangelsdorf announces Golden June, a drought resistant yellow corn derived from white strains. The Texas Experiment Station confirms vitamin A enriched corn, produced after ten years of research. Five yellow varieties from white strains were tested at Blackland station, with results pending for the others.
Funeral service for Thomas E. Taylor aged 1 years 9 months who died after illness was held Friday at 10 o clock from McCulloch Dansby funeral chapel. The E B pastor conducted the service and at the grave in the city cemetery. Taylor born Jan 8 1855 in Alberdeen Miss lived in Bryan 52 years and was a deacon at First Baptist. Survived by daughter Miss Tommie Taylor of San Antonio sister Mrs L A Dodson of Wills Point and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were members of the First Baptist Business Men Bible class.
The Works Progress Administration approved asphalt topping for a little over 20 miles of east Bryan graveled streets. Work will start soon after the west side project is finished.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors on Tuesday opposed diverting highway funds to shore up the old age assistance program to cover obligations due before year end. The special committee also filed a resolution urging denial of a telephone franchise renewal, citing deteriorating service since the current company’s take over and the receiver’s oversight. A Farmers Market building plan, budgeted at about 3000 dollars with city county and chamber funding, prompted a request for a joint committee to discuss with the city and county governments.
Otis DeHart and Dewey Carnes received five year prison terms while Royce Carnes drew four years after pleading guilty to burglary. The indictments stem from entering and looting dormitory rooms at Texas A and M College. DeHart and Dewey Carnes had prior prison records and Royce Carnes was on suspended sentence at plea time. Curley Walker awaits trial as co defendant.
Brazos County Chapter of the American Red Cross announces the annual Roll Call from November 11 to November 26. E. R. Bryant resumes as Roll Call chairman for 1936 37, with the local chapter praised for stable operation and strong service. National membership reached 4 137 636 last year and Brazos quota remained 900. plans and exact dates to be announced in November.
Ed Blazek president of the Central Texas Auto company joined Texas DeSoto dealers in Houston for a ten day conference at the Detroit factory. The group traveled by special train after a Saturday night departure, all wearing a ten gallon hat bearing the Texas Centennial Exposition message.
Eva Mildred Jones was elected president at a called meeting of the College Avenue Baptist Young Woman's Auxiliary held Tuesday evening at the home of Ethel and Irene Thompson to name officers for the year. Other officers named include Ruth Griffin vice president Ethel Thompson secretary Irene Thompson program director Nell Griffin mission study chairman and Olive Sample announcement chairman. The next regular meeting will be Monday evening at Nell Griffin's home.
Two dogs were killed Monday after a rabies scare on College avenue as several other dogs were believed bitten. One dog owned by Mr. Phipps, kept for observation, was released after no symptoms appeared and then bit Monroe Riley’s dog before both were slain.
Mr and Mrs Edwin Bullock and their family relocate to Seguin today where Mr Bullock becomes assistant manager of the J C Penney Co store opened recently by James Ray who was formerly with the Bryan store.
Central Texas Protestant ministers and lay leaders meet at the Roosevelt hotel in Waco on October 13 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to outline National Preaching Mission plans ahead of the Texas visit to Dallas November 15 16 17 18 with Dr E Stanley Jones among participants.
The Travis Parent Teacher Association meeting scheduled for Thursday is rescheduled to October 29 due to the circus in Bryan. The program remains the same and all members are urged to note the new date and attend.
Dr. Ide P. Trotter is named head of the agronomy department at Texas A and M College. He arrives with a decade of experience as Extension agronomist at the University of Missouri and will lead teaching, research, and extension efforts. The department had been combined with genetics after Dr. J O Morgan’s death in 1982, with Dr. E P Humbert supervising the merged unit. Trotter’s appointment returns full leadership to agronomy.
A B Conner director of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station will speak on the desirability of establishing in the Southern Cotton Belt a research institute. The talk opens Friday at the first Southern Chemurgic Conference in Lafayette Louisiana, with sessions Thursday to Saturday at Southwestern Louisiana Institute auditorium. National speakers will discuss broader uses of South farm products in industry.
Ed Rychlik died at his home Friday morning at 4 o clock after a few hours of illness. He was 49 years, 10 months and 9 days old and had lived in Bryan for many years. Survived by widow, six children, four brothers, two sisters, and two sisters in Houston. Funeral Saturday at 9 with Rev. Elrod and Rev. Gleissner. interment in Bryan City cemetery. pallbearers named.

News from Fort Smith Arkansas reports the death of Thomas Sulas Hairston a former Bryan resident and police officer. He moved to Arkansas in 1898 and joined Fort Smith police in 1909 serving as patrolman and officer. He died after a heart attack following a shooting incident when confronting a gunman. He was survived by wife Emma Johnson Hairston son Walter Hairston two sisters Susie Winkler and Fannie Watson.
