Grimes county will hold its annual fair at Anderson from October 7 to 10. Catalogues with premiums and information are out, distributed by County Agents Geo A Altgelt and Velma Erisman. Entries span farms cattle poultry gardens orchards women 4 H clubs and merchants. Entertainment includes valley shows and horse racing. Officers include A P Wickey president and A Muenker vice president with Geo Siddall secretary and August Oberkamp treasurer.
Rev. T. J. Valenta assistant pastor of St. Joseph's Bryan travels to Fargo North Dakota as diocesan director of the Catholic Rural Life Bureau. He will join diocesan directors from across the country and expects a two week absence.
Oliver E. Ford Jr son of Mr and Mrs O E Ford of Crockett and former Bryan residents is listed among seven Texans commissioned as second lieutenants from the reserve corps. Ford is stationed at Barksdale Field Louisiana and the announcement appeared in state newspapers on Friday October 2.
Missouri Pacific Lines will bring a modern passenger train to Bryan for public inspection from 2 10 to 8 00 PM on Tuesday Oct 20 The display aims to show what to seek in modern rail travel and what Mopac offers It will include a divided coach deluxe coach diner lounge and sleeper and the train will be air conditioned throughout with conveniences for passengers.
The Bryan city commission plans a special election to approve amending the charter to authorize extending public utility service beyond city limits. The measure, urged with Rural Electrification Administration support for a $320,000 loan, clarifies that such debt would be a charge on affected property not a city debt. A hearing is set for Oct 26 at City Hall to fix the election date.
Rehabilitation loans for the new crop year are authorized by the Resettlement Administration but funds are limited. J. E. Box of Brazos County says emergency loans will cover seed, feed, and subsistence needs, while standard rehabilitation loans for teams and equipment are not authorized this year. Previous borrowers may receive supplementary loans for supplies, with repay periods up to five years for recoverable goods and shorter terms for consumables.
More than 300 members of the Bryan National Farm Loan Association and Bryan Production Credit Association attended a get-together and barbecue at the American Legion Park in Bryan. Speakers outlined loan programs for farmers, with A C Williams noting farm sales and loan figures in Texas as well as the Farm Credit Administration’s role, while W S Barron and Lesser Newton urged support for farmers maintaining homes and securing credit.
Dr. Webb Buchanan retired as commander of Earl Graham Post No. 159 and was named chair man of the Department of Texas Community Service Committee. State commander Drury M. Phillips made the appointment in Huntsville. Bryan Post is noted for leading in state community service under Buchanan. Additional committee members will be chosen from each division later.
Austin October 6 an emergency program adds 28 small flood check dams to the Brazos system supplementing 13 proposed earlier. The plan lists dam sites on San Gabriel Brushy Creek Navasota Lampasas Leon North Bosque Paluxy and more with dam heights ranging 30 to 100 feet and lengths up to several thousand feet. The proposal aims to mimic flood control seen on Lampasas and other tributaries and includes surveys on Colorado and other Texas streams along with permits from the water board.
Bryan Lions club marked Fire Prevention Week with Eugene Sanders of Austin as speaker. The talk covered fire prevention basics and the Bryan fire prevention committee formed eight years ago to inspect homes and cut fire losses. A board meeting and committee chairmen’s lunch were planned for Thursday with S. M. Brown urging full attendance.
Osa Johnson, a black man, was found guilty of bigamy in Brazos County District Court, marking a rare conviction in years. The jury deliberated Monday afternoon under Judge W C Davis, with Assistant County Attorney W R Allen presenting the case. Johnson faces a two year term in the state prison for the offense. Attorney J A Rhodes defended Johnson.
Miss Lucy Harrison led Bryan College Station Business and Professional Women on a program about Brazos County employment. Mrs J L Brock spoke on women’s employment in the county and G W Strickland discussed steps to boost jobs with the National Reemployment Service.
The Bryan couple Mr. and Mrs. A. A. McKenzie observed their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at their Bryan home. They wed in Barrie Canada on October 4 1876 and were joined by daughter Mrs. Katie McKenzie Sims and son in law M W Sims. Granddaughter Mrs. Preston Newberry could not attend. Mrs McKenzie uses a wheeled chair after a long illness, and the couple remain celebrated in the community.
Dr. Thomas Gordon Watts of the First Presbyterian Church and Dr. W H Andrew of the First Baptist Church are the only Bryan or College ministers listed in the first edition of Who's Who for the clergy of America.
Constable Frank Kre arrested six residents in Smetana for gaming on Sunday in Justice R. B. Grant's court. Wilburn Walling and John Matacheck pleaded guilty with fines and costs totaling 14 dollars each. four others were warned and did not appear. Names listed: Louis Kasarek Charles Kasarek J J Cahill Will Conlee.
Fire gutted Ivan Langford’s West 26th street home about 2 PM Saturday. Origin undetermined but kitchen suspected. Fire eased by neighbors alarm and firemen after dense smoke filled the closed house. Damage to furnishings and clothing, insurance partly covers loss. no family members were home.
Robbers struck the White Elephant beer hall on North College early Saturday stealing money from the piano. It marked the second burglary at the venue within about a week.
Merchants of Bryan and College Station will choose the Centennial rodeo pageant girls this fall marking a shift from Saddle and Sirloin club selection. The event on Friday night October 16 precedes the A and M versus TCU game and is part of the official Centennial program.
Officers of Earle Graham Post No. 159 American Legion were installed by M. M. Erskine. Lang Spell was named commander with a full slate including Raymond Jones as vice commander and Paul Pearce as adjutant. The meeting also set committee appointments and praised retiring commander Dr. Webb H. Buchanan.
More than 250000 carloads of surplus hay and roughage have been listed with the Federal Livestock Feed Agency. Texas accounted for about 27000 carloads as winter feeding nears. Brazos County farmers are urged to notify the Livestock Agency in Kansas City to dispose of excess feed promptly.
The 1936 reunion of the 36th Division veterans will be held in Fort Worth on November 7 and 8 with Oct. 10 and 11 postponed due to conflicts. The 90th Division also meets in Fort Worth on November 6 to 8, allowing members to reunite. Registration headquarters will be at the Texas Hotel.
Prominent Bryan civic figure William Sr Howell aged 67 died Sunday at his East 28th Street home after a lingering illness. He had long led the Howell Lumber Co and guided local business groups. funeral set Tuesday at 3 p.m. at his residence with Dr. W. Andrew officiating and burial in Bryan City Cemetery.
The city of Bryan begins asphalt topping on dirt streets on the West side, aiming to complete 12.3 miles with no major interruptions. East side work plans 20.7 miles of paved streets and sewer installation, to start after West side finishes.
