Hon. Oak McKenzie, senatorial chairman for the Hoover Democrats in the 14th district, started an organization tour today. He will stop in Elgin, Giddings, Cameron, Lexington and other towns before returning to Bryan.
Mrs R M Sherwood of the Woman's Auxiliary hosted a Monday afternoon tea honoring Mrs Norman Anderson, wife of Rev Norman Anderson, at the College Station Presbyterian Church. Guests brought needlework, enjoyed refreshments, and discussed winter and spring auxiliary plans.
United States Senator Morris Sheppard spoke at Hearne on Governor Alfred E Smith candidacy. He praised some Tammany members as honest and urged support for Smith on prohibition and constitutional faith. Attendees included Judge W C Davis F L Henderson Oak McKenzie W E Neeley R V Armstrong and many Bryan citizens.
Clinton Carnes left for Atlanta to face charges of embezzling about 1,000,000 dollars from the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Church. Georgia officers took him into custody in Winnipeg.
New York games will air at 10 Eastern time and St Louis contests at 2 10 Eastern time. The two radio chains will cover all games starting Thursday.
William Allen White arrives in Emporia and vows a sustained attack on Governor Alfred E. Smith’s record. He plans to support Herbert Hoover, acting as a Kansas editor free of campaign committee influence, and emphasizes he has not retracted past criticisms of Smith.
Jefferson City editorial figure W. R. Hollister aged 50, editor of the Capitol News, killed himself at his home last night. The body was found this morning. Hollister was a recognized name in national Democratic political circles.
Texas A&M coached by Dana X. Bible prepare for a tougher test against Sewanee Tigers in Dallas at Fair Park Stadium on October 6. Davis is uncertain due to injury though likely to suit up. Sewanee brings strong passing and veteran talent. The Aggies focus on defense and team play while anticipating a high effort from Sewanee.
Brazos county club boys win trips to the Dallas Fair. Named are Robert Kindt Frank Conaway Ed Moore and Alphonse Habarta. They will visit October 9 10 and 11 with transportation provided by the Bryan Chamber of Commerce. Names of winning Brazos county girls to be announced later.

Senator J W Hall of Houston resigns his Sixteenth District seat to Governor Dan Moody effective immediately. The holdover, elected Harris County tax collector in the primaries, resigns to allow the November 6 election of his successor to coincide with the general election.

The Reading Club held its first meeting of the year on Tuesday afternoon October 2 at the home of president Mrs L O Wilkerson. Fourteen men attended after a brief business session, then a social hour. Miss Jola Barron gave two readings that were much appreciated. The club outlined an ambitious program for the coming year with an especially interesting study course.
Maria de los Remedios Aparicio Soreque, an Indian woman in Maravallo, gave birth to five sons on September 16, Mexico's Independence Day. Husband Marcelino Soreque, a farmer, and his wife have been married for one year.
A Bryan Lions Club business session Tuesday welcomed Rev. Thos. G. Watts back after an extended absence. The group approved paying an $11 Lions International semi annual convention fund due and discussed attendance enforcement under Article 4 Section 4. The secretary will notify absentees that the by law will be enforced and excuses reviewed by the board of directors.
Roosevelt agrees to seek the New York governor's chair after initially opposing the bid. He states he will run to help Governor Smith and will follow his telegram acceptance while continuing the national campaign schedule. He plans to speak in Columbus Georgia and nearby areas this week.
The Bryan Delphian chapter plans its first meeting Friday at 3 p m at Carnegie Library. The year’s study is Medieval Stories and Modern Fiction. Mrs F D Fuller is president and Mrs W M Owen is secretary.
Leonard Johnson held on forgery charges escaped from the county jail in Nacogdoches by sawing out. He told fellow prisoners he would return in a few days. Ver non Dorsett also escaped with Johnson but briefly left then re entered his cell.
The Woman's Missionary Union of College Avenue Baptist Church held its first meeting of the church year. Mrs. R. W. Persons led as general chairman and announced circle chairmen. Bible study will cover Second Samuel with a four-book mission study including home and foreign topics. Circles elected new chairs: Circle 1 Mrs. Powers, Circle 2 Mrs. Riley, Circle 3 Mrs. Barron, Circle 4 Mrs. Lavinder.
The Bryan Little Theatre opened its 1928-29 season with a meeting at Carnegie Library. Judge Burton announced the year’s tentative program, with The Torchbearer slated for November and Clarence Parker named property man. President Crenshaw urged full attendance and noted entertainment programs at each meeting.
Cain Anderson, Harrison county farmer, convicted of violating the anti mask law and sentenced to eight years by a Canton district court jury, was denied a new trial by Judge P. Bond. The case will be appealed. Anderson was charged with flogging Mr and Mrs Richardson and Mrs Straps near Marshall on June 8 1927.
Colonel Charles Lindbergh sent a message from New York endorsing Herbert Hoover. He stated a strong belief that electing a Republican president is of supreme importance to the country.
Floyd Strelsky 17 of Texas City, a UT freshman, died after being struck by an Austin driver, Doyl Griffith. The accident on the east side of the campus fractured his skull and he died at a local hospital shortly after 1 o clock.
Cotton futures close 10 points lower while local spot quotations fall from 17 8-4 to 17 1-4 cents per pound reflecting softer market activity.
Shanghai October 3 700 Marines embarked on Transport Henderson sailing for California. Admiral Mark Bristol had recommended reducing the China force from 3800 Marines as conditions were not requiring that level of deployment.
At the University of Texas a board meeting considered abolishing fraternities after Nolte McElroy of Houston died from an electrical shock during initiation at Delta Kappa Epsilon. President Benedict may form a committee to study fraternities and sororities. Some urged immediate system changes. others proposed building three large dormitories funded by incoming rentals.
In Austin on October 3, Miss Helen Paxton of Abilene sister of Mrs Dan Moody wife of the governor married Weaver Moore of Houston at 8 p m in the governor’s mansion. Over 200 guests attended the ceremony with Mrs George Lee Paxton Jr as matron of honor and Richard Burns of Houston as best man. Dr Lee R Scarbrough pastor and uncle of the bride officiated. The couple planned a Pacific coast wedding trip via scenic points.
For Bryan and vicinity the forecast calls for tonight and Thursday partly cloudy with probable showers.
New Haven Conn Oct 3 Mrs Margaret Veno injured in an automobile crash with a car driven by John Coolidge last week was reported to have taken a turn for the worse. President Coolidge's physician Major James Conegal called for aid. Alfred Veno who drove the other car is recovering from a fractured skull. If Mrs Veno worsens the case may be reopened.
Brazos county reports 15 721 bales of cotton received from Parker Warehouse 6099 Farmers Union Warehouse 8558 Eden's gin 2078 round bales and 25 square bales with 2078 round bales equal to 1039 square bales indicating a likely large yield between 24000 and 26000 bales.
STEAMSHIP AMERICA reports distress and sinking in a northwest gale. Captain George Fried says the vessel is steering toward the Dutch steamship Celaend, located about 1,000 miles east of New Fou. Celaend departed Rotterdam for Boston on Sept 25.
Mike Bukowski wed Miss Annie He bron at the courthouse as his seduction trial was called and then squashed by Justice Joe T. McGee. Tomorrow in district court Lee Cortemeglia faces a liquor possession for sale case with County Attorney Neeley and Henderson against defense by Judge Bethea.
Lt.-Col. C. J. Nelson head of the military department at Texas A and M College is promoted to colonel in an announcement from the War Department. A campus surprise party at his residence featured the silver eagle insignia presentation by Mrs. Nelson as President Walton and staff looked on. Nelson has a long Army career including World War service and prior teaching duties at Auburn and Fort Sam Houston.
