Questions on Safe Dairy Investment for Farmers
A local farmer asks how much to invest in a dairy herd and equipment and what risks of overproduction may arise in three years. The article argues profitability depends on pasture, roughage, grain, and management, citing Bermuda grass, sudan grass, and alfalfa hay, with proven cost reductions and milk gains from pasture changes. It notes national dairy production and import/export trends and advises starting small, using high grade sires, and focusing on feeding, breeding, and marketing to improve profits.
