The People's Column calls for nationwide Fire Prevention Week with emphasis on eliminating fire hazards. Residents and property owners are asked to review hazard letters mailed to them and return them to city hall by Saturday. Bryan has made a good start in reducing fire losses this year and urged continued care and cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and city authorities.
Nat Washer of San Antonio was elected chairman of Texas new state board of education in its first meeting. Mrs. Noyes Smith of Austin is vice chairwoman, with 8. M. N. Marrs as ex officio secretary. The nine members will study school finance, establish institutions, and plan athletic needs and textbook adoption. Bryan lawyer F. L. Henderson serves on the board.
Ageeots C H Pugh and H H Young of Houston visited Bryan today with former Bryan ties and cordial welcomes. T B Warden of Houston, Gulf Coast Good Roads Association engineer, met Jno M Lawrence to offer help for Brazos county road plans. Mr and Mrs L V Polk of San Antonio and Mrs H E Watkins of Houston visit their mother Mrs C F Brown and Mrs Mayon Ricks.
First and second year vocational agriculture students at Bryan High School will compete for prizes at the American Legion Fair in Bryan on October 31 to November 2. W. E. Leverkuhn announces score cards will judge entries with cash awards and trophies totaling $30 first year and $10 first year second place, shared prizes from Rotary and Lions clubs, plus recognition planned for the third year next season.
A special meeting of all officers and teachers of the First Baptist Sunday School and all organized Bible class leaders will be held tonight at 7 30 at the church. The meeting is called by educational director H P Black.
Candy Armstrong pleaded guilty in district court to stealing turkeys and was fined $50 by District Judge W. C. Davis. Quincey Armstrong, indicted in the same case, was freed as the case against him was dismissed.
Atlanta dispatch reports the tropical gale near the Virginia Capes adds six deaths to seven from the Bahamas last week. Fatalities include a drowned man, a carpenter crushed by a falling building, a woman electrocuted, a man killed by a downed wire, and two more deaths on highways.
Nacogdoches Texas October 2 Senator W E Thomason announced that the Old San Antonio Road association has been called to meet in Nacogdoches the week of the county fair with the date set for Thursday October 24 Nat Patton of Crockett serves as association president and issued the call.
The Bryan Chamber of Commerce Fire Prevention Committee will meet in city hall Thursday at 10 to plan next Tuesday's efforts focused on fire safety in schools and clubs. Eugene J. Sanders, head of state fire prevention on the fire insurance commission, will speak to the chamber, students, Lions, and other groups.
Engineers say the levee leak danger north of Augusta is checked and flood waters from the Savannah River would be limited to 100 blocks in the lower section. Residents were urged to move to higher ground as waters backed up four miles below town.
L. D. Gaffey of Denison has single handedly planned and erects a concrete two story building 50 by 120 feet. After nine years of labor he expects to finish the first floor soon and complete the structure within two more years. He performs masonry carpentry plumbing and electrical work unaided.
The $1,130,000 Webb county concreted highway from Laredo city limits east over four miles to the Webb Duval line will be completed soon, according to contractor Henry B. Zachry.
A mysterious blaze consumed a two story frame building used as a private sanitarium in Dallas last night. City officials opened an investigation and reported no patients were on site at the time of the fire.
The Pastors Association and families held a barbecue supper at Sue Haswell Memorial Park in College Station with six o clock seating under Roy S Holloman and Rev M Hollis. The event featured barbecued pork beef and lamb fruit salad pickles potato chips bread and ice cream and served as the first dinner sponsored by the pastors organization. Earl Graham Post 159 American Legion will hold its monthly meeting Friday night at the First Methodist church. Plans for the Brazos county fair October 31 to November 2 will be discussed and committees named. Judge A S McSwain urges Legionnaires to attend.
Bryan fans urged to buy football tickets from A and M athletics manager James Sullivan before Thursday. A special Southern Pacific train with about six coaches will run from Bryan and College Station to New Orleans, departing Thursday evening and returning after Oct. 6, carrying coaches players and other college officials.
The national Grain Marketing Corporation, a proposed 20 million dollar firm, may form within a week to cooperate with the federal farm board and extend marketing aid to grain farmers. William Settle, chairman of the organizing committee, announced the plan in Chicago.
The cotton market closed lower with futures down 15 to 20 points. New crop cotton traded around 18 to 19 cents per pound.

Port Arthur Oct 2 Sabine Towing Company reports tug Bafshe disabled in gulf hurricane. Two hydro planes will search for seven man crews on drifting barges cut loose as engines failed. Bafshe located and to be towed to Mobile for repairs.
The 45th Brazos County Singing Convention will be held at Reliance church on Sunday October 6. Led by Jess E. Hensarling of Bryan, the event gathers Gospel hymn choirs from Brazos and neighboring counties with visitors from Houston Navasota Madisonville Iola Normangee Brenham and others. A morning and evening service of song will precede a noon basket lunch for attendees.
New York City detectives and telephone experts found that all wires into Mayor James J. Walker’s city hall office were tapped. The padlock on the main terminal box was broken, and a short wire linked the mayoral lines to an abandoned line to the aldermanic chamber, with insulation cut along the way.
A. K. Short of the Federal Land Bank urged Texans to unite for soil and water conservation to avoid fertility loss. He spoke to Lions Club members in Bryan during a Chamber of Commerce meeting outlining plans for county wide discussions and noting improvements in Bryan including a new municipal building and stadium under construction.

At the Marion Manufacturing Company cotton mill two men were killed and 15 wounded in a clash between union and non union workers. The United Textile Workers had formed a picket line outside the gate after a strike settlement.
In Borger on October 2 a four hour mill court of inquiry began into county and city officials amid the slaying of District Attorney John Holmes. The court weighed other charges against a peace officer as Brigadier General J Walters and Governor Dan Moody express concern about intimidation and fear to testify.
Brenham report says G G McNeese district manager of Southwest B Telephone Co. suffered a neck fracture after striking a chair. He remained active for a month before X rays showed the break. Doctor expects recovery with a brace over about two months.
Oct 2. R. Mondrews presents the Masons Lodge with three gavels carved from the post of an ancient beam brought from Virginia over a century ago. The gavels are made of solid inlaid wood.
