In Chicago, a wooden coach at the end of an eight car express was struck by a steel North Shore train. Nine killed and about 65 injured, two critical. Motorman in custody as investigation begins. The collision occurred near Granville station as the northbound train overtook the Loyola express.
Miss Julia LaFevre of Houston visits A. D. Jackson home then attends a Texas A and M College dance. She travels to Austin to see the Aggie Steer game while relatives plan gatherings around the Aggies versus Longhorns at Memorial Stadium.
A 50 pound Narragansett gobbler, blue ribbon winner from the Wallis ranch at the Turkey Trot show, is en route to Washington as a gift to President Roosevelt. The Cuero based bird was among the show’s finest and a map of Texas featuring Cuero as turkey capital backs the address.
During the Thanksgiving program at Travis school two girls and two boys won gold star badges for an essay contest. Dale Buchanan Jean Johnson Billy Andrew and John Hugghins received the awards under the Humane Education program started by county health nurse Mrs J H Sheton and Miss Jewell Stewart's class led the project.
George M. Brandon of Dallas arrived for Thanksgiving with his mother at the La Salle Hotel. On Thursday they will drive to Austin to see the Turkey Day game with Brandon backing Texas and Coulter backing A and M in the Gridiron Classic.
Frost is clear tonight in New Orleans tomorrow. East Texas shows fair conditions with freezing temperatures in the northeast and frost in the south. West Texas will be fair and colder in the extreme southeast tonight.
Nueces County leads Texas counties in cotton ginnings with 83 345 running bales as of Nov 1, ahead of Ellis 74 962 and Hill 62 551. All counties except Nueces showed higher ginnings than the 1985 period, while Nueces fell from 86 056 last year.
The Bryan Pastors' Association sponsors the annual union Thanksgiving service this evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Free Will Baptist church with Rev. L. A. Wilson of St. Andrew's Episcopal delivering the sermon. Pastors and choir members from other churches are to take part and the public is invited.
Fear for Col. Charles A. Lindberghs safety eased when a woman at his Kent home said he was safe after an overnight unreported flight from Ireland to England. It later emerged he landed near Chester yesterday and drove off quietly, presumably toward his home.
The Lone Pine Girl Scout troop No. 1 met on Tuesday for a regular meeting at Stephen F. Austin High School. They discussed Thanksgiving activities and welcomed two new members Lynette Edge and Rachel Wilson. A court of honor followed with Ruth Watts Joan Davis Virginia Lee Fairies as patrol leaders and other officers listed.
J Frank Dobie of the University of Texas has released The Flavor of Texas a large book of nearly three hundred pages. It features anecdotes about prominent pioneers who helped shape Texas and its progress in modern leadership.
The rector Rev. L. A. Wilson announces a Holy Communion celebration with special Thanksgiving prayers at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The public is cordially invited to attend this service at St. Andrew's Church.
At 8 o clock Thursday morning the College Avenue Baptist church invites the community to a prayer and praise service led by Rev. V. P Breazeale. Soft music greets arrivals, then silent prayer followed by several songs. The gathering is open to all, with special invitation to strangers in town.
Dr. T. D. Brooks of A and M College spoke at the Bryan Rotary Club Thanksgiving program. He traced Thanksgiving from the Mayflower voyage in 1620, through 1789 and 1864 proclamations, and urged gratitude for public schools, crops, religious and social freedoms, and democratic ideals.
The Texas Supreme Court reversed lower courts and sent the case back for another hearing. Fort Worth sought to condemn Lone Star Gas Company distribution for city takeover, but the court found the district court erred in denying an injunction and held the condemnation law inadequate for procedure.
Dallas county grand jury indicted Joe Francis brother in law of Clyde and Buck Barrow in a $102 robbery of J. F. Cole on November 7. Marvin Stark paroled convict was also indicted in the crime.
Firemen were called to the rear section of the Edge Apartments this afternoon to contain a grass fire. The blaze was extinguished with no damage reported and no injuries.
Betty Jo Cook, Travis elementary pupil, received a certificate and a $50 check for winning the Texas Centennial Historical contest. Principal Sam Crenshaw announced the prize at the school this morning. Teachers Lelia Griffin and Mary Jewel Stewart received honorable mention certificates. A bronze Texas Centennial Seal plaque was sent to the school. Four seventh grade students earned medals for humane stories, including Dale Buchanan, Jean Barry, John Huggins, and Bill.
In San Perlita on November 25 Ranger Captain William McMurray authorized Willacy County residents to search King Ranch for Luther Blanton and son John missing since last Wednesday after a lagoon hunt. Residents had threatened force but agreed to authorities’ plan and allowed Rangers to proceed without interference.
Fort Worth obituary notes Rev. R. B. Morgan died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday aged 65. A Texas native educated at Baylor, he pastored Everman Enon, Glenwood Grapevine Hebron and Memphis churches. Services were led by J. L. Ward at Grapevine Baptist Church.
In New Orleans Navy records a blaze on the steamship Scan tic last night is believed to have killed nine workmen. One charred body surfaced today and remains unidentified.
Mrs. R A Harrison and Mrs. Henry S Locke of the WPA work with Brazos County Health Board nurse and Red Cross officer joining Bryan and Brazos County delegates in Mexia for a Texas Social Workers gathering. Speakers included Miss Eleanor A Schopke former New York relief supervisor Dr Robert Montgomery economist and Mrs Elizabeth Wyatt director of training for child welfare.
AUSTIN Nov 25 C A McGraw chief of the bureau of identification of the Department of Public Safety notes the rapid identification of a suspect as proof of cooperation with sheriffs and police departments. The bureau, about 15 months old, holds around 30 000 fingerprints and twice as many index cards. It receives roughly 200 cards daily from Texas lawmen.
Osie Parks and Charlie M. Shelton Ed W. Gaida and Marilyn Mueller Albert Dominick and Louise Hownik received marriage licenses as announced.
