Mr and Mrs T M Salvato welcomed a nine and a half pound baby boy this morning at Wilkerson Memorial clinic. Mr and Mrs W T Glass and children Carolyn and Joe returned home Monday after visiting relatives in Emory. J J Barta of Ennis, formerly of Bryan, was in Bryan on business over the weekend. I M Bond visited Bryan Monday from Rock Prairie. Adolph Kopecky Frank Zikes and Fritz Kindt of Kurten were Bryan business visitors Monday afternoon.
A group of U S Army engineers and Mineral Wells office staff inspected Texas A and M Civil Engineering testing methods for foundation materials. Led by Col Francis B Wilby and including Maj J G Drinkwater Capt David T Johnson and Capt Harry A Montgomery the visit focused on tests connected with the Possum Kingdom dam in Palo Pinto county.
Miss Winifred Jones a senior at Texas State College for Women will depart Feb 2 for a year as a foreign exchange student in nutrition at the University of Otago Dunedin New Zealand. The Lancaster Texas native sails from San Francisco aboard the S S Monterrey to Auckland then Dunedin under a reciprocal university fellowship. Miss Isabel Crowe the New Zealand student also attended the college in 1953 under the same program.
Spanish government announces it repulsed a strong insurgent drive to Madrid defenses and reports gains in the northern Bay of Biscay sector. Socialists seize Hospital Clinico in Madrid University. Britain and France weigh mediation ideas as Germany and Italy linked to fascist assault.
D L Donaho 45 a Franklin resident and World War veteran died at a Bryan hospital after a three week illness. Funeral services were held at Dr R M Searcy's residence with McCulloch Dansby in charge and were continued at Willow Hole church in Madison County. Interment was in Willow Hole cemetery. Surviving are his widow Annie Searcy Donaho and one son William, plus his mother and several siblings. Pallbearers included D Paul Dansby and J J Jones among others from Bryan and Franklin.
The Texas Highway Commission requires removal or setback of all billboards within 300 feet of the Highways 6 and 21 intersection before any beautification work can proceed. Bryan businessmen and Brazos County Chamber officials are urged to help remove or relocate signs to enable a safety oriented improvement spanning north to the Old San Antonio Trail.
S M Brown Bryan school superintendent was reelected to the executive committee with one member from each district. F L Henderson former state board of education member spoke at the Texas State Teachers Association meeting in Fort Worth during Thanksgiving. Attendance was among the largest in history. An amendment changing the organization’s setup was passed. The next meeting site is TBD.
Fire early Saturday destroyed Bert McIntosh’s negro rent house at 21st and Preston streets and damaged a neighboring property also owned by him. The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
Final arrangements for the safety lane campaign in Bryan were made with City Manager R G Williams by Sgt G E Schauer and statistician Carroll Monroe. The two day effort by Texas Highway Patrol will test car safety, issue blue and pink inspection stickers, and educate students at local schools and colleges.
City officials plan a Thursday night meeting after today’s charter amendment election to answer Rural Electrification Administration questions about rural distribution construction and possible rate schedules. A $256000 allotment covers about 256 miles of lines with survey and build options under review.
Minnie Shirley 38 died after a long illness at home in Reliance. She is survived by husband Louis Shirley and three sons Louis Jr Frank and Perry. Funeral services will be at Reliance church Tuesday with Rev Milton Lewis officiating. Interment in Reliance cemetery under McCulloch-Dansby direction.
Madisonville, Nov. 30 Judge S W Dean a veteran Nava sota jurist and legislator will retire at end of current term. Max M Rogers of Huntsville named to take his place. Dean served since 1908 in the Twelfth District, later returning to practice in Navasota, and also served in the Texas House during the 29th and 30th sessions.
New York dispatch reports a brisk cold wave across the eastern sector as fresh water shipping slowed and fire crews faced disruption. Temperatures plunged below freezing east of the Rockies causing general hardship and travel difficulties.
Martin Munoz faced a rough ride as he fled Traffic Officer J W Hamilton along the Southern Pacific road bed after a 25th street turn. The chase ended with Munoz jailed on a charge of driving a car while intoxicated as his Model T Ford bounced like an empty box car.
A large U S Army Keystone bomber nose sank in mud at Black's Airport while the tail rose skyward. The crew escaped unhurt after the crash which followed a Saturday landing from Maxwell Field Alabama en route to Randolph Field Texas for repairs.
Cattle shipments from this area are the largest in several years with one lot filling 31 railroad cars. Poor range conditions are cited as the main reason for the movement.
E R Bryant announces a Christmas bonus for J C Penney associates with over a year of service. All regular staff receive two weeks extra pay, shorter-tenured workers get proportional amounts, as Penney notes a record year and loyalty as the basis for the additional 1936 remuneration.
F. C. Fuller, chief of the Feed Control Service at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and a commissioned state official for the FDA, left Monday noon for Washington, D. C., to conduct official business.
Mike Clark and Willie Carter were arrested in Taylor for shoplifting. Officers recovered a large package of neckwear and other merchandise stolen from Bryan stores. they were jailed in the county jail after being brought to Bryan.
Three Texas A and M judging teams earned top honors at the Chicago International Livestock Exposition on Saturday. The Aggies placed second in the Midwest Intercollegiate Poultry Judging Contest and fifth in both the livestock judging contest and the International Hay and Gray Show contest. R L McClung of Alvord was the high point individual in poultry judging, with the poultry team coached by Ford Munnerlyn as the high team in market eggs and second in exhibition. Gilbert Nagel of Fredericksburg also stood out among team members.
The Brazos County Planning Board met to discuss a county home rule plan funded by tax dollars. The proposal aims to form a commission manager government without altering Bryan College Station or rural school setups. If pursued, petitions 300 signatures strong would trigger elections and a county charter convention to draft the charter.
Farmers Market directors organized to operate a proposed Bryan Farm Market with R. G. Williams as president and Mary Locke as vice president. A. N. Keller, Judge Ferguson, and Dr. E. B. Reynolds named to by laws and finance committees. Financing set around 2000 loan. total cost about 3000 funded by county, city, and chamber with up to 1000 each. Plans and specs to be drawn. bids expected next week and construction to start soon. Rules and product scope to be finalized later.
Tom Field manager of the Brazos Valley Cotton Cooperative Association Searcy Smith cotton buyer D L Wilson secretary of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce and Mrs Lee J Rountree traveled to Waco Friday morning to attend the cotton parley held there today.
