The A and M College board awarded contracts for the new science hall at North Texas Agricultural College. The Fort Worth firm R F Ball Construction Company won the general contract, A S Pearce and Son of Dallas the heating and plumbing, and J N Johnson & Company of Dallas the electrical wiring. All bids were the lowest, with $110,000 Legislatures appropriated for the project, expected to finish by August 1.
The New York Court of Appeals fixed the week starting January 9 for the electric chair executions at Sing Sing prison of Ruth Snyder and Henry Judd Gray for the murder of Ruth's husband Albert Snyder.
Rev. R. S. Marshall a leading young Methodist preacher from Nacogdoches and former Cameron Hearne and Teague pastor is assigned to the Bryan church. He is about 38, married with a family, Mason and Lions member, Southwestern University graduate, and noted for broad learning and popularity. The Bryan congregation also bids farewell to Dr. H. H. McCain after three faithful years at Central church Houston and lists spring pastoral reassignments across several Texas churches and stations.
Julius Corte who died Sunday in Houston was remembered at a Monday 10 AM service led by Rev Basil Bravi of Bryan at Saint Marys Catholic church. Interment followed in the Catholic cemetery. He was father to Frank Corte of Hearne with relatives in the area mourning.
At the Tuesday board meeting the First Methodist church announced the standing committees for the year led by Chairman C. M. Bethany. Finance and Assessment includes Do. R. Publicity includes R. C. Franks Jno. M. Lawrence Jr. Ushers feature J. H. Beard R. M. Dansby and all Junior Stewards. Inter Church Relations lists A. M. Waldrop Wilson Bradley. Resolutions include W. H. Lawrence R. C. Franks. Brotherhood (Fraternity and Social Service) lists Jno. W. Black J. W. Hall and J. D. Martin.
The First Methodist church board of stewards agrees to purchase Mrs Mabel Castles property next to the church to use as a parsonage and to build a Sunday School annex on part of the site. The deal takes effect January first as part of a growth plan begun by the Wesley Brotherhood during Dr John W Black presidency.
In Miles on November 21 bankers credit the slogan the cow the sow and the hen for regional diversification. Until last year cotton dominated the area and most farms grew little foodstuff. After profits from diversified crops, farmers sought loans showing evidence of broader production and growing bank balances.
A large barn owned by M. E. Wallace burned Friday night around 10:30. A Ford truck a Hupmobile and considerable feed were inside the barn which was fully engulfed when discovered. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Rotary speaker W H Holzman of the A and M College Fiscal department told Bryan and College residents that about 3 000 people rely on the college for daily bread. The college handled 5 280 000 dollars in the past fiscal year and enrolls 2 447 students this term, with a growing physical plant valued near 9 000 000 dollars when including branch campuses.
A hen at the Dullaney Poultry Farm in Marlin has produced 329 eggs over an 865 day period, marking a remarkable lay record for the local farm and poultry keeper.
The Woman's Missionary Union of the First Baptist church sent a full barrel of homemade cookies to the Buckner Orphan Home in Dallas. Circles of the union prepared and packed the cakes by 10 a.m. Tuesday, shipping them in time for Thanksgiving Day to comfort the orphan children, a yearly Bryan Baptist tradition.
Fort Worth has led U S cities in meeting labor issues and supplying occupations since 1900. The chamber survey shows about 32 000 wage earners in the area earning 46 million dollars annually and only three minor strikes from 1900 to 1927. It notes a continual building program since World War I with over 20 million dollars in construction and an 85 percent white, 7 percent Black, 3 percent Mexican workforce with other foreign born groups making up the rest. Labor leader C W Woodman calls Fort Worth's labor condition ideal.
About twenty Bryan Baptists motored to Iola Tuesday for the first Woman's Council meeting of the consolidated Creath Brazos Association held at the Iola church. Officers were elected for the year including Mrs D D Jolly as president and Mrs T R Butte as first vice president. A nominating committee from each county was appointed and travel funds were approved for the president. The next W M U meeting will be January 17 1928 in Madisonville and a missions school will be held in Bryan in January.
Bryan Woman's Club meets at Carnegie Library with high attendance as out of town guests fill Bryan homes. Mrs. Raysor, delegate to the Texas Federation in El Paso, delivers a glowing report and news on the federation program.
A San Angelo craftsman, W. T. Conner, built a table from 175 varieties of native Texas wood. The piece contains 875 wood pieces, was cut with a pocket knife and a 10 cent hand saw, and took 18 months to complete.
The 13 month old Bonny Anxiety X Hereford steer bred and owned by Texas A and M College won grand championship at the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City. D W Williams sold it for 910 dollars, with Nuers Brothers as buyers. The steer was fed since calfhood by Charles Watson and remains bred at A and M.
The Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Foundation awards $250,000 to the University of Texas for social science research. Funds will promote cross department cooperation, develop young faculty, and support new studies justifying the grant. Beneficiaries include professors in economics history and theology among others.
