The Brazos County Poultry Show will be held December 1 2 and 3 drawing attendees from across the country. This year's show plans many entries and an attractive prize list. Brazos County aims to become a leading poultry and turkey center with this event.
An American, W. Thompson, manager of a Copala mine in Guerrero state, was seized by 20 bandits. They demanded 5,000 pesos ransom after attacking his home and threatening death if authorities were alerted before payment. Thompson’s employee notified Mazatlan, and a messenger was sent to secure his release.
A new cold wave brought freezing temperatures and light snow flurries to Texas panhandle and central regions with frost forecast for central Texas. In the Midwest, another cold surge from the Rocky Mountains caused sharp temperature drops and fresh snow in Kansas and Missouri after prior snowfall across northern mountains.
The Brazos County Poultry Show at the Brazos County Woodyard on Br Smith’s street will feature birds from many places. Manager Eberstadt reports about 365 entries and a prize list to be distributed. Egg guessing contest and awards will cap the two day event with judging at 8 o clock Thursday.
Bryan residents hear of a Texas Editorial Association meeting in McAllen as A. D. Jackson reports a successful turnout. The county nurse office will weigh and measure preschool children on December 1 with free literature available for parents. Miss Marie Haines returns from Taos Artists Colony to College Park. The Rhodeses of San Antonio visited Bryan for Thanksgiving and extended their stay with local residents. Maude Moore becomes a North Zulch teacher after visiting Bryan.
Justice Siddons denies Edward Kidwell petition to intervene in contempt proceedings tied to the mistrial in the Fall Sinclair case. Kidwell sought permission to participate in the contempt actions in the District of Columbia Supreme Court.
The Dallas News reports the death of Mrs. Mamie Radford Evans at age 70 in Dallas. She was the daughter of pioneer merchant J. C. Radford of Bryan and survived by husband J Walton Evans, three daughters Annie Harriet Evans and Daisy Smith, and brothers Jim M. Radford and E. E. Radford. Funeral held in Abilene.
S. M. Marrs, superintendent, announced that Miss Irma Stokes of Morris county was appointed Third Assistant Superintendent of Public Construction. She succeeds Miss Mary Sanders Williamson, who became second assistant in the general reorganization.
Special to The Eagle reports New Orleans November 30. For Bryan and vicinity expect tonight partly cloudy and much colder. Thursday should be generally fair and colder with continued chilly conditions.
Rotary's luncheon at Long's Cafe featured a musical program of instrumental and vocal numbers plus an inspirational talk on friendship by D L Wilson. Kathleen Stewart played new and old piano pieces, Kathryn Hutton sang Love's Old Sweet Song and Mighty Lake Rose, with Mrs Ray Danforth on piano. New member W R Fairman was introduced and Houston insurer Henry George attended as a guest.
FE. D. Martin, superintendent of the A. and M. Consolidated school, spoke at Bryan high school's chapel on the topic Trend of Modern Education. He previously served as principal and this year was promoted, noted as one of the region’s youngest superintendents.
A. Bruton, 21, pleaded guilty to robbery with firearms for the Richland bank hold-up and was sentenced to death if convicted again for the Tehuacana bank robbery. The jury retired only four minutes.
The Brazos County Advisory Board of the Salvation Army met in Bryan with W. D. Pedigo to organize the annual fund drive. Committees will visit every citizen, soliciting contributions to support maternity homes hospitals and local aid programs, highlighting the Army as essential to human needs.
Santa Fe railroad will operate its own freight depot in Navasota starting Thursday. E. J. Valentine is named depot agent and C. I. Sheffield cashier, both formerly with Silsbee. Other positions are pending. Previously three roads shared one office. Santa Fe Mopac and Southern Pacific officials agreed on separate stations.
Violent earth shocks were felt in central Italy today in Rome and surrounding areas. No damage was reported.
Austin reports Representative R. R. Smith of Jordanton urged a special legislative session to curb executions of bank robbery suspects. He proposed Governor Moody contact bankers to end the Texas Bankers' association $10000 reward for dead bandits, arguing trials by jury must prevail.
Between 75 and 160 workers lay pipelines for Community Gas Company aiming to supply Bry an with natural gas by February 1. Soon 150 to 200 more men will join for extensions. City Manager J. Bryan Miller says owners not yet lined up can get gas if all nearby property owners sign. Call city hall for details.
C B Martin appointed director of Extension Service at A and M College Texas effective December 1 succeeding Charles H Alvord who has led since 1925. Martin formerly directed the Southern region for the National Extension Office USDA Washington D C since 1921 and will arrive in College Station soon. He is South Carolina native and helped shape extension work there and in Washington.
Leonard Wood a Black man charged with murder of a Fleming mine foreman was seized near Jenkins and shot to death on Cumberland Mountain shortly after midnight authorities reported the mob action occurred Sunday night with no immediate arrests.
The College Station Parent-Teacher Association will meet Friday at 3 15 P M. A home and school program will be given and full attendance is urged. Hosts are Mesdames J A Clutter R E Karper M E Campbell and B D Marburger. Program includes Home Music by Mrs Carl Sprague The Home and Its Relation to the School by Mrs O W Silvey The Relation Between Parent and Teacher by Miss Louise Pipkin What is Being Done in Other Schools by Dr D C McIntosh and a School Exhibit by the third and fourth grades.
A strong earth shock was felt today at Ovalle in Chile with houses rocked but no casualties reported. No injuries or damage reported beyond shaken buildings and minor alarm.
The LaSalle hotel in Bryan now stands three stories high as construction rushes ahead. Dupree Fountain, slated to manage the property, has been in town several weeks observing the rapid growth. Officials originally aimed for an April completion but March seems possible given the current pace.
Mrs J E Astin hosted the Bryan Presidents Club at her College Avenue home for a Tuesday luncheon at one o clock. Guests included Mrs M Hetty Curry of Houston and Mrs A M Waldrop. awards were given for best flag report and each guest received a souvenir picture from the trip.
Edwin Mix, 73, father of film cow puncher Tom Mix, died at his DuBois home from a heart attack last night.
Brazos Union Lodge A F and A M No 129 hosts a Musical Masters degree Friday at 8 00 pm in lodge rooms with a quartet and a skilled team led by H E Randolph postmaster The program promises local and visiting Masons a memorable evening and a likely crowded house given the 500 members in the lodge and the strong esoteric work involved.
Hugh Wilson, American delegate to the preparatory disarmament commission, said the United States cannot cooperate with labor's special committee. He added the U S will consider the security committee recommendations when submitted to the preparatory commission.
Mr and Mrs E W Markle entertained Sunday evening with a yellow themed three course dinner. Guests included Mr and Mrs J B Stevenson Sr Mr and Mrs N F Rohde and their daughter Shila Rhode plus the Markle hosts.
Fort Worth reports show State Senator Robert A Stuart assailing Governor Moody and the Texas Highway Commission for failing to fulfill pledges and create a connected Texas highway system. He called for resignation of the tied hands of the commission and backed a nine member elected commission to ensure accountability.
In Geneva on November 30 Soviet Russia proposed a radical disarmament move at the opening session of the disarmament commission. Maxim Litvinoff called for the dissolution of all land, sea, and air forces and for no form of such forces to exist, concealed or otherwise.
The Colleged Thursday noon service for J. B. Bagley is noted along with a college band. Program includes 7:00 Improvements in Cotton Marketing by Dr. W. P. Lee, 7:15 Principles of Radio Broadcasting by C. C. Yates, and 7:30 mixed quartet performances led by Miss Mildred Salley and Miss Catherine Hutton with Cadet Criswell and others.
Mrs W B Potter of Bowie will be the honored guest at a Wichita Falls luncheon Thursday hosted by local women's clubs. The event honors Mrs Potter and Dr Dorothy Scarborough. Potter recently elected president of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs and also serves as president of the Texas Woman's Press Association.
The Christmas holidays for Bryan public schools begin Wednesday afternoon December 21 and classes resume Monday January 2 1928. The fall term is praised as highly successful with strong student scholarship.
A span of the toll bridge over the Red River six miles north of Cainesville was destroyed by fire today, damaging the Oklahoma approach and flooring. No injuries reported.
