The Dallas News reports city and county tax offices using advertising to collect delinquent taxes with success. Dallas nearly meets its annual target by Oct 1 while Brazos County planned to notify delinquent taxpayers of publication dates. The piece noted Dallas city and county efforts and hinted at continued gains.
Sacramento, Calif. May 29. Officers questioned three young men through the night about the death of Virginia L. Johnson, 22, whose kerosene drenched body was found in a garage. Fingerprints on a kerosene jug did not match, and District Attorney McAllister said the case remained unsolved with indications of possible homicide or suicide.
The two story Wick house for Mrs. Emma Mae Chambers in Cavitt addition is under construction. When finished it will add another attractive residence to Bryan’s new home district. Miss Oline Koenig will attend summer school at the State University in Austin and plans to leave Saturday. Mrs Edge and son Eugene are visiting in San Antonio with relatives. Mr Paul Dunkle and wife, who have spent the year in Bryan, plan to return to Denton after completing work at A and M College.
Robert and Sam Conley Negroes were charged with burglary in connection with theft of chickens. They received two year suspended sentences in district court on Monday.
Charges of overloading a motor truck were filed on Monday night against R L Gayler driver for the English Freight Lines of Houston. It is alleged the vehicle carried an excess load of 2600 pounds.
T Edwin Beard son of Mrs Tray Beard writes from San Diego Calif of his arrival at the Naval Training School. He left Bryan with his mother and relatives last Tuesday, reached Houston, then entered Company 34 14 for twelve weeks of intensive training. If still fit he will be assigned to duty on ship and is now rated Apprentice Seaman. Address Naval Training Station San Diego California Company 34 14. He invites letters from old Bryan friends.
Harvey school closed for the summer. Miss Jessie Gay Preston of Dublin has returned home. A picnic at Sue Haswell Memorial Park highlighted the last week’s activities.
Americ an Legion district convention is scheduled for June 16 and 17 in Bryan with M. M. Erskine as chairman. Ed S. Martin Lang Spell and A. N. Sturart aid the committee. Registration at the club house and LaSalle Hotel. Program includes screening, swimming, dancing, A. and M. College tour, religious message, district reports, state officer messages, musical entertainment, barbecue lunch, and discussions. Auxiliary meeting also set.
Austin reports broad coverage of Washington finance with Dr. J C Dolley noting no major acts passed in the last month yet administration measures progress. Proposals to authorize direct federal loans to industry move through committee with hints Congress may empower the RFC to lend up to 300 million and Fed banks to extend 101 million.
In New Orleans on May 29 Alf Capone former Chicago gangster chief was denied an appeal for release from the federal penitentiary at Atlanta by the United States district court of appeals Capone serving 10 years for income tax evasion sought a writ of habeas corpus arguing the offenses were barred by a three year statute of limitations.
Lions Club of Bryan elects Ss M Brown H R Brayton and Luke Patranella to the board replacing retiring members. Upcoming events include a State Convention program in Mineral Wells June 4 and 5 and a Court of Honor for Bryan Boy Scouts on June 8.
W. E. Saunders suffered painful bruises to a hip in a downtown fall Saturday. He was taken home and placed in bed as no bones were broken.
In Corbeil Ontario on May 28 26 year old Mrs Olivia Dionne gave birth to five baby girls. Attending physician Dr A R Dafoe warned the five may not survive though the infants showed strength later. Toronto CMA secretary Dr F C Routley noted the birth as Canadas first quintuple birth.
Members of the Auxiliary of Earl Graham Post American Legion reported a record poppy sale Saturday. The entire stock was sold for about $185, the first time in local history the poppies sold out, with thanks given to volunteers and participating citizens.
Judgment of 250 dollars plus costs was rendered by Judge W C Davis in the suit of W M Jones and wife against W S Tyler over the death of their son struck by the Tyler car. It is reported that the parties reached a satisfactory settlement.
Joe Stanley and Dorothy Fifer received a marriage license from County Clerk Goen, allowing the Bravos County couple to wed.
The Municipal Utilities League meets June 18 19 in Bryan with Bryan Mayor W. N. Stewart welcoming delegates. Sessions cover regulation of public utilities and utilities history. Speakers include Cecil R. Glass J L Wright and Edward Gosslin. attendees tour Hearne plant and enjoy banquet at Municipal Playgrounds Clubhouse.
Sheriff W D Arthur of Dickens County traveled to Bryan Saturday morning seeking the return of Robert Williams a black man indicted for hijacking by the May grand jury He is charged with three burglaries in Dickens County and escaped from jail in Dublin County Attorney Oak McKenzie says Williams will not be turned over until after his trial here during the current court term.
Robert Williams pleaded guilty in district court to the robbery with firearms of J. P. Abbott of College Park. He was sentenced to 85 years in state prison by the jury. Sam Conely and Williams admitted theft of chickens and received 25 days in jail.
A fire at the Ward Mooring place in Steele's Store, Brazos Valley, damaged four box cars, two loaded with alfalfa meal, and totally destroyed the alfalfa warehouse with 12 000 bales of hay and meal. The bedgin of the blaze started at the loading platform at 12 30 pm Friday, the gin later saved by Bryan fire department. Bryan Hospital to reopen June 10 under Catholic Sisters of Charity with four charity beds to aid those unable to pay.
R. C. Franks, agent for Southland Life, reports strong optimism among agents after the 25th and Silver anniversary convention at the Baker Hotel in Dallas. The May 21 to 23 gathering featured high attendance and upbeat outlook as agents exceed last year's production, signaling Texas may be turning the corner from a low mood.
W. E. Lige Thompson has been indicted on four counts for obtaining money by false pretenses. County Attorney Oak McKenzie plans to try the case at the current term. Tom Hudson, a negro, also faces trial for false swearing and obtaining money by false pretenses.
Lawrence A. Block son of Mr and Mrs Harry Block was ordained as a rabbi Saturday at the annual commencement of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati His ordination was performed by his mother and he will move to Mason City Iowa where he already has a congregation to lead.
London officials hint Britain would pay a token sum on the war debt by June 15 if the United States participates in a conference to settle the debt. If President Roosevelt rules out token payments, Parliament may block any settlement. London circles expect a conference to resolve the entire issue.
Theft of a tank of gas damaged a county road tractor parked on the San Antonio Prairie in Precinct No. 3. Sheriff J. H. Reed reported no crew or suspects located last Friday.
F. E. Lichte, Lipscomb county agent, is in Bryan for his daughter Bessie May Lichte’s graduation from Stephen F. Austin high school and to visit family. Lipscomb, a northeast Panhandle county with 4,200 people, faces severe drought. $282000 in drought relief has been spent, and no soaking rain has fallen in about three years. He remains committed to his work in the wheat area despite hardships.
Mrs. M. B. Parker will operate the Bryan club house when the Municipal Playgrounds building opens. The committee announced plans for sandwiches and short orders, Sunday dinners, soft drinks, dances, and private events. Major repairs are nearly finished.
A group of A and M College cadets plans a yearlong series of musical dramatic and cultural events for the Bryan College community with financial pledges to fund bookings. Professor Dan Secates heads the appeal urging residents to buy at least one season ticket by October 8 1934 as Bryan women continue the effort.
