A. W. Kinnard Sr reflects on Mother’s Day and the idealized mother figure from childhood memories. The piece describes a grandmotherly image, a First Lady’s commemorative stamp, and the author’s nostalgic reminiscence of a mother who ruled with knitting, songs, and admonitions.
W F Gatlin of Enterprise is recuperating and progressing well after a serious October automobile crash. He was known in Bryan as a young telephone worker treated at Wilkerson clinic for a spine injury. Guests of Long Spell include Reid Perkins H Thad Childre Horace R Smith and R C Price from Greensboro N C and Dallas and Houston. Dr M Francis and his wife visited Bryan today from A and M College campus.
M E Wallace Jr completed a derrick on a well to be drilled on M S Broad land eight miles north of Bryan. Machinery will be installed Tuesday and drilling to start by week’s end for Buck Wallace No 1, financed by former associates of the driller.
Six oil companies including Pure Oil and Magnolia were enjoined by Judge W C Davis from dumping salt water into Plummers Creek, tributary of the Navasota river, after evidence showed thousands of fish killed and water made unsuitable for livestock and irrigation. The petition was signed by James Wv.
Adeline Easter an aged former slave and longtime resident of the Chatham homestead on the old Tabor road died in a early morning fire that consumed her home. Alec Leviston escaped with only his clothes after the roof began to collapse as he slept on the gallery. Authorities believe she died at the doorway while trying to escape possibly after knocking over an oil lamp. Funeral plans pending relatives in Fort Worth Oklahoma and Luther Hall great nephew requested body be held.
George E B Hadley learned by telegram from Pittsburg California that his only brother John G Hadley aged 61 had died. John had lived abroad 35 years seeking health and left no relatives in Bryan besides his brother.
M P Scarmado of Pitts Bridge Burleson county brought pests to the county agent claiming they harmed cotton by sucking stalks dry. County Agent Benson showed the insects to Dr F L Thomas entomologist at College Station who labeled the insect the false chinch bug and noted it usually attacks cotton after weeds and grass are cleared. It would affect the field but likely cause little overall damage.
The state department accredited Stephen F. Austin high school for its commercial arithmetic course without samples. Miss Eula Nagle teaches the course after Miss Clara Calhoun left midterm for a Germany consular post. Bryan school has taught it two years and all courses at Stephen F. Austin are now accredited. A public speaking course will debut next fall under Miss Pearl Rucker.
Walter L. Williams and Ruby Ruth Robertson of Brazys County have been issued a marriage license by County Clerk Clyde Goen. The couple intends to marry.
L. L. Griffin of Bryan civil engineer leaves for Denver to join the U S chief engineer's office of the Interior Department. The unit focuses on reclamation in Colorado, reclaiming waste lands and river bottoms. Griffin, a former Texas A and M student, has 14 years in civil engineering with Southern Pacific and Shell Petroleum.
Henry Ross and County Agent C L Benson organized a series of county meetings to educate farmers on the cotton situation. The first session at Kings Highway used government charts to show yield, production, surplus, and price trends, and explained Bankhead Act acreage reductions. A Prospect meeting followed with similar chart talks, and Smetana is set for the next gathering this Thursday. The sessions are free and aim to better inform farmers about government efforts to restore price relationships and lift farmer income.
Fire Monday afternoon damaged the roof of a tenant house on South Bryan avenue occupied by Taliferro Valdez and owned by the Stec estate. Damage was about 50 dollars due to an overheated flue. Monday night fire burned seat covers from the car of C Williams on East 50th street.
The petit jury for the second week of district court was dismissed after all litigants agreed to trial before the court only, waiving a jury.
Bryan Knights of Columbus hosted a Sunday initiation for 16 candidates into the first second and third degrees. Dr L I Malinak William Gebhard W Convery Joe Hamilton led the ceremony with about 300 Knights from Houston Galveston Taylor Cameron and Caldwell present. Candidates from Cameron included Johnnie Boriskie Marcel Konecny Henry Visoski Alphonse Habarta Paul Holubec Johnnie Zemanek George Walek Anton Fuschak Herman Boerdecker Paul Michalka Anton Putz and Paul Scanlan.
C M Elwell district supervisor will deliver three commencement addresses over two nights. He opens at Franklin High School Thursday then speaks Friday at Leona and Madisonville with times 8 30 and 9 50 PM.
The former Boze Bakery, once at the Red and White Store, has moved next door to D. Mike's Grocery and operates independently as American Beauty Bakery. With new equipment it invites former patrons and new customers to visit the updated location.
Dr. W. H. Andrew pastor of the First Baptist church was elected president of the Bryan Lions Club in the annual elections. He will assume leadership July 1 and has served as second vice president this term. New officers include E. J. Howell first vice president Coulter Smith second vice president S. M. Brown third vice president E. R. Bryant Lion Ta rner Roland Dansby Tail Twister R. C. Franks re elected secretary and treasurer after eight years service.
Jance A Block son of Mr and Mrs Harry J Block is among 16 sons of the Hebrew Union of Cincinnati who will work as Rabbi at the commencement exercises in the cold Saturday May 26 His graduation will send him to Mason City Iowa where he will lead a congregation and begin rabbinical duties at once Mrs Block will travel to Cincinnati for the graduation of her son.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors spent most of Tuesday morning on road matters. James Sullivan announced plans to push right of way for Old San Antonio Trail from Benchley to Brazos River. W W J Coulter reported on pursuing federal designation for Highway 21 and a Memphis to Laredo route linking to Mexico City highway. The groups planned the year’s committee work and urged attendance at Farmers Field Day June 28 and the college commencement. Directors urged voting for the city charter amendment in today’s election.
A prize educational trip to Chicago awaits the top 4 H livestock record in the state this year. The winner attends the 15th National Club Congress during December with the International Livestock Exhibition, enjoys a luncheon at Armour and Company, tours the packing plant, and joins fellow champions from other states. Selection is by the state club leader with county agents.
Rummaging in a Bryan attic, residents found a June 3 1892 Bryan High School graduation programme. It notes total graduates 85 with 81 white and 4 colored, lists 20 named honorees and the invocation by Dr H V Philpott at Grand Opera House Bryan Texas.
The American Legion Americanization program will award one boy and one girl in Bowio Travis and A and M Consolidated elementary schools. Winners chosen by students and staff for courage character service companionship and scholarship receive a bronze pin a three inch bronze plaque and a certificate bearing the Legion seal. Presentations will be at Travis Bowie and Consolidated by Dr. R Henry Harrison Hiram Downard and Col. C C Todd respectively.
The Woman's Missionary Society of Millican Methodist Church led by Mrs. R. E. Dunlap announces a barbecue for Tuesday night May 29. All candidates are invited to attend and speak.
The Minter Springs Community Sunday School hosts a barbecue at the Minter Springs school Friday night May 26. Proceeds go to the Sunday School and church, with candidates invited to speak per superintendent F A Whitmore.
Leslie D. Williams of Bastrop was chosen president of a temporary Brazos County group pushing federal designation of Highway 21 from Shreveport to Laredo. J. N. Raney, Madisonville, named secretary. James Sullivan, vice president. About 75 attendees from counties along No 21 supported federal designation to improve and maintain the route to connect with the new Mexico City highway.
Preparations under Mrs J Brock county relief administrator and with Mrs Alma Metcalfe to reestablish the county cannery closed in February. Canning equipment will fill the old Fire Station on 26th Street with a large supply of cans on hand. A toll system basis of operation will be announced next week allowing farmers to bring produce for processing in return for a percentage directing relief food. The cannery is seen as a permanent institution for individual and community canning long term.
Raymond Moore son of Mr and Mrs W E Moore and a Texas A and M College student was advised he passed the mental examination for Annapolis. He took the test as first alternate under appointment by Congressman Luther A Johnson. It is not yet known if the success will lead to a Navy career.
J E Wittman Jr the grandson of Mr and Mrs John Wittman of Bryan will graduate from John H Reagan Senior High School in Houston in June He serves as advertising manager for The Pennant senior class yearbook and is active in many school activities
In a Washington message dated May 22 President Roosevelt urged Congress to declare a policy of increasing the proportion of silver in the nation's monetary stocks to one fourth silver and three fourths gold. He said the policy would be mandatory and authorized him to buy silver as needed to reach the goal.
Committees from Earl Graham Post American Legion and L. S. Ross Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy met Monday to perfect plans for joint Memorial Day services on May 27. H. T. Downard and Mrs. Albert Buchanan lead plans. graves will be decorated May 26 by American Legion Auxiliary and UDC committees at Bryan city cemetery Catholic cemetery and old Boonville cemetery.
Abraham Murphy, a negro from the Allen Farm area, was indicted for murder by the February grand jury in the death of Austin Smith, also a negro. Murphy, captured with Sheriff J. H. Reed and Constable Horace Reed, had fled after allegedly striking Smith with an iron rod. Smith died from his injuries. Murphy was arrested after a tip from J L Hazlett of Houston County and is expected to be tried at the current court term in Bryan.
Baccalaureate sermons for Allen Academy and Stephen F. Austin High graduates were preached at First Methodist and First Baptist churches. Rev. R. E. S. Bledsoe spoke on The Positive Attitude Toward Life. Music featured a male quartet and solos. ceremonies opened Bryan school commencement week.
