Mr and Mrs Philip A Salvaggio of Steeles Store spent the day with Pete Scarmado and family. The Pitts Bridge club met with all members present. The Trants and children joined an all day singing at Martins Prairie in Grimes county. Ivan Boyett remained in Houston with his ill brother T P Boyett at Baptist Hospital. Joseph A Canayespe of Bryan visited Brazos valley grandparents Pete and Mrs Scarmado.
Rabbi Henry Cohen confirmed four candidates Ruth Taubenhaus Natalie Block Alfred Schulman and Leon Maniloff at Temple Fredda in Galveston on Sunday evening. Rabbi Cohen paid tribute to Joe Groginsky and a reception followed at the Maniloff home with decorative gladiolas and refreshments.
Cotton leafworms have been found by Bureau of Entomology workers at Port Lavaca and Corpus Christi. Six fields nearby showed an average of 26 flea hoppers per 100 plants, with four fields warranting control measures. The maximum boll weevil infestation reached 1.0 percent.
The Middlewest received June showers easing May drought as rains fell across Kansas Nebraska and a snowstorm hit Leadville Colorado. President Roosevelt convened officials in Washington to discuss relief for distressed farmers and stockmen in affected areas. The Minnesota National Guard was mobilized to enforce a livestock embargo into the state for grazing.
Miss Betty Syptak of First Methodist church was named president for the next term ending Jan 1 by the Bryan Federation of Young People's societies at its Sunday evening meeting at College Avenue Baptist church. She is the first girl to hold the post. Earle Tardy presided over the brief business session.
Experts from Fort Worth overhaul Montgomery Ward Company in Bryan with first and second floor displays and mezzanine redone. About twenty counters added on the first floor to expand lines and displays. Work led by D. D. Pruitt P. E. Roberts and Bernard Richardson. completion aimed Friday.
About 120 guests attended a Friday evening barbecue at Bell Hill farm in the Brazos Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Seth Taylor and Boswell Porter hosted the event to celebrate the Taylors moving into their remodeled Bell Hill home. Guests came from Nava to ta, Brenham, Caldwell, Bryan, and Mumford.
Norman Oklahoma reports seven seismic oil exploration crewmembers killed in a roadside dynamite magazine explosion eight miles southeast of town. Investigators doubtful to determine cause as bodies lay mangled over a 200 yard area. Two trucks at the site were destroyed and a crater marked the blast.
The Texas A. and M. College board created the James Robert Astin student loan fund during its annual meeting closing session in College Station. The fund, to be administered by college officials, starts with $18,000 once executors notify that the Astin farm at Mumford has been sold.
Reliance residents plan a Monday night chicken barbecue on the schoolhouse lawn to raise funds for the local baseball team. An auction of cakes will accompany the meal with food donated by community members. candidates for district county and precinct offices will speak.
College Station June 5 Members of the State Veterinary Medical Society of Texas at Texas A and M College honored Dr Mark Francis veteran dean of the school of veterinary medicine and chief of the veterinary science division The eleventh semi annual gathering was designated the Mark Francis Meeting A sketch of Dr Francis life and work prepared by Dr A B E Marney of San Antonio was read by Dr H B Thaxton of Cherokee who recently graduated from A and M
Texas A and M College started the summer session with classroom work after a busy morning of registration. Most students completed registration today and credit course enrollment remains largely uncounted as the registrar's office finishes processing.
John William Nicol aged 58 died Tuesday at his Oak Grove avenue home after a short illness. He was born and raised in Bryan and managed his late parents estate after his youth. Surviving are three sisters and a brother. Services were held at 5 pm at McCulloch Dansby funeral chapel. Dr. Thomas Gordon Watts conducted.
The War Department telegram signed by the Adjutant General announces Allen Academy as an Honor Military School for 1934. Secretary of War extends congratulations. It is the highest rating for military schools nationwide and Allen is the only Texas school to hold it, an ongoing status for several years.
Alvie Adams son of Mr and Mrs T A Adams received word Thursday he has been made assistant superintendent of construction work by C M Davis Fort Worth contractor near Lampasas where five new bridges are being built He will leave Sunday and report Monday Mr Adams a 1929 Stephen F Austin HS and 1922 A and M College graduate has been graduate assistant in civil engineering at A and M and did graduate work this year Mr Davis a Texas Section ASCE president leads the firm.
Emmitt L. McClure, long time Bryan insurance man and Brazos Mutual salesman manager, resigns to become president of Central Union Life Insurance Company of Houston. He will remain based in Bryan and continues as a state insurance examiner.
Two billboards rented by the Palace Theater were torn down late Monday in protest at the Barrow Parker films. A witness reported a yellow car with an X license plate driven by the saboteur, but no description was provided.
Temperatures stayed mostly high last week with a peak of 96 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday and a low of 62 degrees on Monday. Rainfall amounted to 0.04 inch on Sunday as readings varied from 89 to 96 across five days.
Robertson county went wet by three votes in the election held last Saturday. Hearne Calvert and Bremond all gave a net majority while the rest of the county reduced the margin to a total of three.
Honor graduates at the University of Texas include Miss Mary Jane Nall of Bryan and Miss Gussie Branch of Austin. Nall earned a bachelor of arts degree and Branch a bachelor of journalism.
D L Wilson secretary of the Chamber of Commerce Henry Ross Bryan high school vocational agriculture teacher and County Agent C L Benson spoke at the Edge farmers meeting Friday night Ross outlined the government cot ton production plan under the volunteer method with charts showing how acreage yield carryover and consumption affect prices. He will discuss the Bankhead act as a supplement to the plan at a future meeting. Wilson urged rural rehabilitation and Benson advised farmers with cotton contracts to monitor their transactions to avoid trouble from potential investigations.
Drilling on the Back Wallace well on M. S. Broach farm eight miles north of Bryan began Friday. Geological reports are favorable and extensive study by former Texas A and M geologist Dr. Salisbury supports the project. Cores will be taken to the bottom and coring starts once surface casing is set.
The Business and Professional Women's club will hold July and August meetings, deviating from the usual vacation. Miss Stella Stuart explained emblem significance while Miss Kate Adelle Hill presided and urged members to accept emblem obligations. A nominating committee of Mrs. Minnie Fisher Cunningham, Mrs. M. L. Hayes and Mrs. Dora Barnes will propose officers for the June 28 vote, and a club collect dedication will hang with Rotary and Lions mottoes.
June 5 report states the commutation of the life imprisonment sentence of J R Silver, 36, from Tarrant county for robbery with firearms to permit release from the state penitentiary on July 11, 1936. The clemency proclamation dated June 1 surfaced late. Silver took part in a robbery in which Rosco Wilson, treasurer at a Fort Worth theater, was killed.
Chief of Police K. T. Tillis received a letter from L. G. Phares head of the state patrol confirming a $100 contribution from Bryan residents to the reward fund for police officers who killed Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker in Louisiana last week.
A letter dated January 31 from Guy Hutcheson, electrical engineering graduate and radio engineer with Admiral Byrd, arrives at College Station. He describes Ruppert’s arrival in the Bay of Whales seeking docking site and notes a 45‑man crew and supplies to be left before returning to New Zealand. He asks for letters to reach him via Byrd Antarctic Expedition No. 2, via Postmaster, New York City.
Local grower C. M. Cummings displayed two bunches of home grown tomatoes on Friday the larger bunch containing 12 well matured tomatoes. Credit for the notable showing goes to Harvey S. Dorman a graduate student in horticulture at A and M College whose work aided the crop. Dorman has a brother overseeing 200 acres at Highland city garden supported by Houston.
Dr. P. Seardine the Italian consul at Houston addressed Steeles Store’s Friday night graduation on the Heritage of the Italian People. Father Basil Bravi offered the invocation and diplomas were given by county superintendent Mrs. W. E. Neeley. Ten graders Frances Note Tony Note and Margaret Banana named among graduates. Steeles State was the last school in the county to close.
