A. W. Kinnard Sr contemplates large questions of life and society. He urges using libraries and journals for uncolored social criticism as he introduces the concept of Social Security and the pursuit of a liberty loving,God serving society.
Bryan residents J. J. Tobias Aubrey Tobias and W. H. Burt traveled from Steep Hollow. Megargle public schools official G. W. Branson and wife visited Bryan to tour A M College and arrange for their five senior students to enroll next September. Funeral service attendance for J. O. Ford at Hollis cemetery was noted with local residents among the mourners. Mrs. Pat Burns returning home after hospital stay following surgery.
Ernest Sample of College Avenue Baptist church was elected president of the Bryan Federation of Young People's Societies, succeeding Grover White Jr of First Methodist. Miss Louise Moehlman, Miss Edith Jones, John Sidney Smith named vice president secretary treasurer and reporter respectively. The new officers begin in September after a summer break. A Free Will Baptist program with accordion and trumpet solos accompanied the session.
Bryan and Brazos County chamber directors met to plan three key highway efforts. They aim to secure right of way for the SP underpass, recondition Old Highway 6 south, and obtain a right of way for the Old San Antonio Trail west of No 6. A Texas Highway Commission route from Somerville to Texas A&M was discussed with steps to secure funding for a survey and resolve right of way issues.
Deputy state game warden Sam Cavitt spoke to the Bryan Lions Club on wildlife work and urged joining the Texas Wildlife Association. The club reelected directors and announced an Amateur Show on June 9 with winners from prior shows competing for a final prize. New member Julius B. Lauterstein was introduced.
Jack Doane sustained bruises but no broken bones after his car skidded and rolled over on College road just before noon Monday. He was transported to St. Josephs hospital for care.
Rain soaked Forrest Field and threatening weather force a postponement of Steph en E. Austin high school's open air commencement and pageant An Empire on Parade from this evening to 8 o clock next Monday. Superintendent M Brown cites field drying time and other Bryan College Station events as reasons.
COLLEGE STATION May 23 The state soil conservation committee after an all day session announced the final date for signing work sheets by Texas farmers in the new agricultural program has been extended to June 10. The committee said the extension follows a more flexible and understandable program for producers, allowing more time to complete the work sheets.
Applicants for student engineer berths under civil service must be at least 25 years old. Examinations will be held at a date yet to be announced. Applications must be on file in New Orleans by June 11. Details available at the Bryan post office.
Mr and Mrs Guy Blanton formerly of Harvey now in Enci nal visit Harvey with Mr and Mrs Evander Hensarling. Blanton leases 30 000 acres with a Brazos county group leasing 5 000 acres for the hunting season from Nov 15 to Dec 31. Only six hunters allowed at a time.
Residents of Brazos county are summoned for petit jury service during the fourth week of district court. They must report at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the courthouse. Names on the panel include W. O. Postmaster Wilson Bradley notes a 15 percent gain in Bryan post office sales for the first quarter of 1936 over 1935. Receipts reached just over 10 000 dollars, with about 2 500 dollars more than a year earlier. Money orders rose 59 percent, registered packages 22 percent, insured packages 10 percent, COD receipts 44 percent, and money orders paid locally up 59 percent along with postal savings increases.
At the Texas Democratic convention in San Antonio on May 26 Congressman Sam Rayburn lauded Roosevelt and Garner as the nation’s greatest team. He defended New Deal programs and criticized critics while noting harmony among candidates campaigning to unseat Mrs. Clara Driscoll Sevier as national committeewoman. Garner faced reelection without opposition and Elliott, Roosevelt, and Gov. Allred drew cheers.
J O Ford 62 of Mec ca Madison county died at his farm near Norman gee after a sudden heart attack. Survived by widow three sons and one daughter and a brother with relatives in Brazos and Madison counties. Funeral Tuesday at 10 a m at the home with interment in Hollis cemetery.
A Spitz owned by Mrs. G. E. Adams was killed Sunday after an Austin exam confirmed rabies. The dog bit eight others, all of whom will be observed. Mrs. Ross Jones will undergo anti rabies treatment. The bitten dogs belong to W. M. Black, Ross Hall, J. W. Fuller, Guy Harris, Pelham Barron, W. J. Zak, Ross Jones and J. W. Hamilton.
Hundreds visited the new Sanders-McCullough Mortuary plant over Saturday and Sunday despite bad weather. Visitors from Bryan College Station Navasota Hearne Houston and Dallas area attended while officials thanked guests and invited others to tour the facility any time.
Dr. Charles R. Allen known as the father of vocational education will lead a six week summer school lecture series at Texas A&M College. He will discuss the New Curriculum and share his national impact in vocational education. He holds degrees from MIT and Stout Institute and has held roles with Massachusetts and the Emergency Fleet Corporation.
Brazos District of the Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America outlined a year long program including senior and rural scouting, a troop field day and aquatic day. A $1250 budget was accepted for a one week fund drive starting June 22, with Jno M Lawrence Jr. to appoint assistants and donations already pledged by Travis Bryan and family.
The Bryan school board approved a 1000 appropriation toward Stephen F. Austin high school band uniforms. It also decided to add a shopwork department at Kemp high school, with a one room wooden building to be erected on Kemp school grounds. Repairs for summer are approved and a Band Mothers' Club aims to raise funds.
A. L. Watson, a carpenter for Henry Womble, was robbed by a man described as about 5 feet 10 inches tall, 175 pounds, in dark clothes and hat, who brandished a revolver on Saturday night near the McDowell gun and escaped with $73. Police seek the suspect.
Automotive dealers from several towns near Bryan met Thursday night at 8 at the La Salle hotel ballroom to view a sound picture film on the progress of the automobile and the airplane from early to present models. Herb Davis of Thompson Products Cleveland addressed the gathering. Noble Davis Henderson welcomed the dealers.
The L S Ross Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Bryan and College held its annual essay contest for grade schools. Sixty-one essays were submitted on Sidney Lanier, with prizes awarded at four schools including Travis elementary Bowie elementary St Josephs Parochial and A and M Consolidated.
Charles Cade announces J. E. Tatum as new manager succeeding N. C. Baker. Tatum, formerly in charge of parts, began his duties last week at the Bryan Motor Company.
Brazos and nearby counties list Gold Star 4-H Club girls honored for 1936 records. Millie Churik Elsie Novasad Dorothy Marie Sramek Eva Kapchin Milam Estelle Cryer Ruth Jennings Florence Johns Maris Mertz Lydia Schroeder Edna Eickenhorst Nelda Schwarze will receive gold pins at the 1936 Centennial Year Farmers Short Course at Texas A&M in July.
Washington reports two aging leaders, John Keifer of Chicago and Rev Clinton Wunder of New York, did not appear for questioning under subpoena after Dr. F E Townsend urged refusal. Chairman Bell said the committee kept Townsend's defiant stance in closed session and added Rep McGroarty, a former Townsend bloc leader, to the hearing.
Mrs Offa Williams pieced a five point star quilt in Centennial colors and sent it as a gift to Gov and Mrs James V Allred last Saturday. The gift recalls her first capitol visit in 1930 though no reply has yet reached Mrs Williams.

Deputy Sheriffs Henry Koontz and Offa Williams tow a Ford V-8 sedan found at the Sam Dunn place on the old San Antonio road. The driver reportedly jumped from the vehicle saying he would return, but did not. License tied to Marion county with 1986 tags over last year’s.
On Saturday afternoon the Bryan Eagle School of Cookery held its closing session. A total of 203 women received prizes including 48 pound sacks of Sweet Roses flour from H.
