In early days families built private libraries as self education sources but public schools and colleges now provide books. The public library remains essential as a lighthouse guiding social progress beyond recreation, prompting readers to rethink its purpose.
Women of Bryan await the Eagle's School of Cookery opening in the Webb building. Mrs. Martha McDonald will lead 2 to 4 pm sessions Thursday through Saturday with prize incentives, a question box, and demonstrations on budget friendly menus and recipes. Local clubs and merchants back the event.
Dr. J. W. Payne travels to Houston for an Extension program of the Texas Optometric Association at the West building clinic. Mrs. B. Hauser of Winston Salem NC visits Bryan, staying with Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Madeley in College community. Mrs. A. W. Buchanan learns her daughter Mrs. J. T. Sells of Bellflower CA will visit Bryan soon. Sells plans to come to Bryan soon after school dismisses in June or early July.
The Globe Drygoods Company store was closed Monday to take stock and rearrange merchandise ahead of a forthcoming sale. The stock, purchased by Eugene Edge and Son at a receiver sale for about half price, was approved by district court. The Edge brothers plan to pass the savings to Bryan buyers and trade territory users.
The 1936 Bronco yearbook at Stephen F. Austin high school distributed Monday is praised as the best yet. It features more pictures and action, with art, poems by Robert Beriskie, a memorial page for A. M. Waldrop, and staff notes including Ruth Neeley editor in chief.
Brazos County residents are summoned for petit jury service in the third week of district court. Named jurors include J. T. Cross Jr., C. E. Dodson, Henry Shirley, J. M. Barron, T. K. Lawrence, Ivan Langford, P. L. Boswell, H. T. Downard, W. B. Bradley, Cleve Boyder, E. W. Hooker, B. M. Price, and others listed.
A 640 acre land patent signed by Sam Houston grants land for David H. Love for his service at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. Issued in 1844, the patent prevents sale or mortgage during Love's lifetime and is now framed in Teague, owned by Mrs Finis Peyton, a niece of Mrs. Stuart of Bryan.
City and county lawmen, noting cotton choppers are in demand, checked idle negroes along Bryan streets. Many chose work over loafing, as the National Reemployment Service reported over 600 requisitions for choppers sourced from Waco Marlin Austin San Antonio Houston and other points. Police aim to reduce petty theft by removing idle laborers from the streets.
Preparations are complete for the twenty seventh annual Summer Cotton School to be held at Texas A and M College from June 2 to July 11. Prof J B Bagley heads the program covering grading stapling and cotton trade procedure under new universal standards to be adopted August 1.
Thieves hit the F. W. Scasta home on Highway 6, north of Bryan, taking 15 fryers and eight hens. Two weeks earlier they took a dozen or more chickens, and the prior Saturday allegedly robbed the Joe Wehrman hennery of about thirty birds. Police have a description and hope to capture the culprits.
Pete Palasota went to Houston Monday night subpoenaed as a witness in the Vince Boss murder trial. Albert, a Brenham cheese salesman, was found hacked and beaten in a truck compartment after Boss allegedly killed him during a trip from Hempstead toward Houston on March 21.
At Bellwood Lake on a night fishing party Mrs. Cecil Lyons was surprised when an 81 4 pound bass jumped into her lap during a trot line outing with Cecil Lyons and Mack Williams Tyler firemen. The fish was promptly cooked for a meal.

The Travis elementary school sixth graders held a final seventh grade program with Dr. R H Harrison awarding American Legion medals to Mary Elizabeth Hall and Sid Smith. Mrs A J Buchanan gave a U D C medal for the best essay to Rachel Wilson, first, with Lila Lee Vanderwerth second. Frances Phipps presented a pottery set to the school and Darwood Towns gifted Principal J Veron Brown a pair of leather boots in appreciation as Brown prepares for a leave next year.
The 48,000 employees of the National Railways halted their walkout as the Cardenas administration declared the strike unjustified and non-existent. Government action and a president appeal led to workers returning to posts, while military zones enforce the anti strike decision and a conciliation board warned of rights loss if not returning within 24 hours.
The May term criminal docket was set Tuesday by Judge W C Davis. Third week trials include Farris Curry burglary four charges Goree Turner burglary Seth Holmes Mack Alexander theft from person Andrew Armstrong hog theft Ed Chytil chicken theft Fourth week trials include J D Petty burglary and numerous misdemeanor cases involving carrying arms theft and receiving and concealing stolen property.
Edmund Gray was arrested Wednesday night by Officers Norwood Franks and Phillips for carrying a pistol. He was lodged in the county jail and released on bond Thursday morning.
The Sanders-McCullough Mortuary, Inc. announces a public inspection of its new Bryan Texas funeral home at 27th and Washington. Hours are Saturday 2 to 9 pm and Sunday 2 to 5 pm. The former Rohde house has been remodeled with white Nu-Enamel exterior and an interior chapel with blue and white decor, crystal chandeliers, heavy draperies, and gas furnace heating.
New Lions Head S. M. Brown, superintendent of Bryan city schools, was elected president of the Bryan Lions club Tuesday noon. He will succeed R. C. Franks, taking office at the first meeting in July.
Checks were awarded to 12 Bryan Community Band members at a banquet marking the end of a yearlong attendance contest. Winners attended most sessions, with Locke praised for organizing the band founded in 1928. Attendees included Wimberley, Sweeney, Nedbalek, Putz, Konecny, and Fulgham among others.
May 16. Two giant sweetgum logs felled by John Fuller logging contractor on Village Creek six miles south of Silsbee drew local attention when a logging truck stopped at a filling station. The logs measured 45 and 41 inches in diameter and 14 feet long. Logging is the area's main industry and such logs are rare sights on passing routes to the mill.
In Washington on May 20 the House investigation heard Dr. F E Townsend deny that his Townsend pension drive aimed at gaining cold cash or a hatful of money. He praised his followers who feel the same about the old parties and said a third party would form when opportunity comes. Representative Hoffman challenged Townsend as sailing under false colors in condemning parties and planning a third.
A. W. Ray, a federal employee, trapped what is described as the largest timber wolf taken in years on the Wicks place in southern Brazos County. The tan and brindle wolf measured 53 inches from nose to tail, stood 26 inches high at the shoulder, and weighed a good amount. Ray had tracked turkeys killed and wolf tracks before setting the successful trap early Tuesday morning.
The Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs reports Centennial headquarters are secured with help from Mrs. C. C. Jones and Mrs. D. S. Peden. The Transportation Building will host the offices facing the reflection pool. A tree dedication near the headquarters is planned for June 6 with Mrs. Franklin D. Brann and Mrs. James V. Brann in attendance.
