Bryan business secretary J. J. Dickerson of the Grimes County Mutual Insurance association in Navasota was here on business Monday. Mr. and Mrs. David Kern and daughter Mary Helen with son L B visited in the homes of Aug ust Kern and Mrs. Carolyn Kern Fox. Bobby Ann Buchanan, daughter of Dr. Webb Buchanan, leaves with her uncle S A Buchanan for Texarkana after a summer visit with relatives.
Normangee prepares for its Centennial celebration starting June 16 as two U S senators, a governor, and a former governor are billed as speakers. Senator Morris Sheppard, Senator Tom Connally, Governor James V Allred, and former Governor Pat M Neff join Congressmen Martin Dies and Nat Patton, State Senator Gordon Burns, and Attorney General William McCraw on a three day program.
Bryan and Brazos county shoppers rallied for Poppy Day with children selling all 2500 blooms in the morning instead of afternoon. The proceeds support welfare work, though exact takings were not yet determined, amid unusually strong public response.
The Rural Electrification Administration considers a Bryan Brazos county loan project. City departments review the application while officials request three years of annual city audit data. The Board of School Trustees seeks a manual training classroom at Kemp High. Reappointed trustees and a new Board of Equalization are named. A committee is authorized to close 20th Street from Tabor to Bryan avenues.
Mrs Lee J Rountree is elected president of the Bryan Business and Professional Women's Club with officers including Miss Minnie Mae Grubbs first vice president and Miss Wesa Weddington second vice president. Delegates to the Texas Federation convention in Houston are Myrtle Murray Kate Adele Hill and Wesa Weddington. Dinner was served indoors due to rain with members listed.
Memorial Day observances were held by the American Legion and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A service at the American Legion Home honored deceased veterans of World War I, the Spanish American War and the War Between the States. A procession to Bryan city cemetery followed with a wreath and flag decor at Col. Briscoe G. Baldwin’s grave as 135 Confederate dead were named among the graves in Bryan and Boonville cemeteries.
The Girl Scouts met at Sue Haswell Memorial Park at 3 PM Thursday with large attendance and two new members Wanda Warren and Margaret Darrow. They plan a camp at the Boy Scout camp near Sutton from June 9 to 16 and require registration by June 2. Mrs H O Taylor and Mrs D G Gibson head arrangements.
Representatives of Grimes County Mutual Insurance Associa tion will be in Bryan for the next thirty days. W. C. Rea Egan Dickenson and A. B. Syptak join in representing the Grimes County organization which has written over $250 000 in new business each month for the past year.
County Attorney Oak McKenzie left for a sanatorium near San Angelo on Thursday morning and plans to spend the summer there. He was driven out by his son Oak Jr.
A 1886 single line ran from the county clerk’s courthouse office to Sam Henderson’s corner office. No bell, only mouthpiece taps to signal. The Bryan Telephone Exchange opened in 1892 with magneto service evolving to battery in 1912.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church for Mrs Evelyn Stanford Searcy who died Saturday night after a brief illness. The service filled the church as admirers gathered. Pastors Jno L Wharton and W H Andrew prayed with the family before and during the service. Dr Wharton and Dr Andrew led the 4 oclock ceremony.
George G. Chance was named a member of Texas A and M College Extension Service’s state agricultural conservation and domestic allotment committee for 1936. He previously served on the cotton board and has acted as a temporary member of the committee handling agriculture program problems. Other members include A H Montgomery Larrouzet, J H Watson, W L Cage, H W Terry, L C Trousdale, George Slaughter and George Slaughter.
Report from Wynne prison farm says 125 chickens were stolen Monday night using gas to stupefy fowls. Sheriff R W Nunn noted similar large scale thefts nearby with over 40 taken near Marlin and numerous raids across Brazos county in recent weeks.
Brazos County Democratic Executive Committee chair W. S. Higgs announced the filed candidates for district offices in Brazos. Congress contenders include Luther A. Johnson Corsicana Tom White Ennis Noble Cook Thornton J C Burleson Waxahachie and George B Butler Bryan. State senate candidates are Albert Stone Brenham E M Crow Somerville and Alton York Giddings. State representative contenders are Ralph Barry Navasota B C Buck Thomas Shire W T McDonald and George Edge Bryan.
Mit Dansby was elected a member of the board of directors of the First State Bank and Trust Company to fill the term of his late father H P Dansby. A Bryan high school and A M College alumnus, he is a partner in McCulloch Dansby Co and a cattleman. Other directors include M Cole, W J Coulter, J N Dulaney, W S Higgs, C E Jones and R H Seale.
The Bryan chapter 222, Order of the Eastern Star invites the public to a 8 o’clock Tuesday installation at the Masonic Temple. Fanny Mary Smith is installed as worthy matron with Noah C. Cole as worthy patron and other officers named, plus installing officers Stella Allen Buchanan and Floy Erskin. The chapter received a dispensation from Worthy Grand Matron Rebecca Miles to present the ritual work to the public.
Allan Kraft relocates his radio and electric refrigerator shop from the Harrison building on East 26th Street to the Adams building on South Main Street, previously occupied by Sanders McCullough Mortuary Inc.
In Victoria British Columbia Smokey the pet cat died in a fire at the Sturrock Stables Willows race track yesterday after dashing back into the burning stable to shield her newborn kitten. The kitten survived with only slightly scorched fur.
Robert Lee Shirley of Reliance impressed onlookers with a 22 rifle feat. He shot five squirrels with five single shots and killed a six foot seven inch rattler with one head shot. His father Henry Shirley reported the tale in Bryan.
A Texas A and M board meeting approved the next year’s budget and a $20,218 contract for a Texas Forest Service office in Lufkin awarded to I W Baker. Additional funds were authorized to upgrade the college broadcasting station WTAW. Attendees included F M Law Walter G Lacy Vr T O Walton S G Bailey H C Schuhmacher Joseph Kopecky Edward J Kiest Roy B Davis Joe Utay.
Earl Graham Post No. 159 and the Legion fair board map an all day Fourth of July event at the Legion Home. Officials include Dr. Webb Buchanan and Anton Krenek among others. program features addresses by candidates, sports, a barbecue, a dance, and a new car giveaway.
The Forrest Field ceremony drew the largest crowd in Bryan as Stephen F. Austin High School awarded diplomas to its biggest graduating class. Honors went to Hazel Dawn Nunn for citizenship, Helen Miller as valedictorian, Alfred Schulman for boys with a scholarship, and Emogene Ballerstedt as second honor girl.
The Steep Hollow Cemetery Association held its annual meeting Sunday at the Steep Hollow Baptist church five miles east of Bryan. E. A. Peters of Harvey, son of late pioneers Charley Peters and wife, presided as president and the group reviewed the past year while planning to maintain the sacred site for another year. The day concluded with viewing the old church cemetery adorned by petunias cape jasimine and many roses. Caretaker Mrs. I. Mt. Cook and Sava Laity were noted for their year’s work.
