Bryan and Brazos County chamber directors announced plans for an on-up week in Bryan, with dates to be set soon. Citizens should start cleaning their premises now, collecting trash for pickup and removing eye-disturbing materials to improve appearance and sanitary conditions.
Mr and Mrs J L Sample of Tabor visited Bryan today. Mr and Mrs M B Easters came from their Kurten farm to Bryan for the day. Mrs Martin Stanley and Miss Sula Conn of Madisonville shopped in Bryan. Mr and Mrs Robert Young and their three children of Cross Grimes county were Bryan business visitors. J W Harris and John McCallum of Tabor were in Bryan on business.
Poppy Day is explained to Bryan and College students by a speakers committee under Mrs. M. M. Erskine. The red paper poppies symbolize World War I desolation and suffering and support disabled Texas veterans. the talk notes poppies sprang from French battlefields to remind of war’s toll.
Three African American men pleaded guilty to burglary in district court on Monday. Jack Woodward received two years in state prison on each count, Ed Brown two years, and Jesse Jackson two years suspended. They were linked to the Knox Williams commissary burglary at Millican. Charges against Central Bell and Major DuBois in a separate case were dismissed. Judge W C Davis then dismissed the petit jury for the remainder of the week.
The Texas Federation of Women's Clubs through its Division of Correction plans an inspection tour of the Texas Prison System for seven district chairmen. The program urges local clubs to study the prison system, address crime causes, secure speakers and articles, engage the press, and press legislators for needed reforms.
Four Brazos county residents were named as delegates to the Chicago Democratic convention by the Texas delegation in Houston. State Senator Charles S. Gainer was chosen as delegate at large and J L Brock J D Martin and Lamar Bethea were named alternate district delegates.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 5 p.m. for Annie Lillian Barron 39 of Burleson county wife of T. J. Barron who died at the family farm after a weeklong illness from pneumonia complications. Rev. Roy S. Holloman officiated at Minter Springs cemetery Brazos county with survivors including husband four sons three daughters and three brothers two sisters from Bryan Wellborn Houston.
Eugene Van Hook and Ella May Cooper of Brazos County filed notice Monday with County Clerk Jess B. McGee of intention to marry. The notice records a forthcoming marriage by the couple in the county government records.
Brazos county officials seek a successor to late D. J. McDonald as county superintendent of schools and discuss the term length. The commissioners court will not act immediately while awaiting Democratic executive committee guidance on a recent law.
Brazos county cattle horses and mules may be shipped outside Texas boundaries as tick eradication progresses. Dr. C W Brown of the U S department of agriculture says rail shipments require federal certificates while truck moves need state certificates. Rail lines Missouri Pacific and Southern Pacific have cleaned pens and set up inspection chutes for unrestricted movement. Cattle dipping exceeds 20 000 head weekly and stockmen praise community cooperation.
G. G. Wickline chief bridge engineer and J. E. Blair Division Engineer surveyed four completed bridges on Highway No. 21 in Brazos county. They inspected the Brazos and Little Brazos river bridges and two smaller spans. The river bridges are finished but the dumps remain incomplete.
T A Hensarling of Steep Hollow, visiting Bryan, says cattle could revive Brazos county fortunes. He recalls herding 1,300 head to Kansas City and predicts a stock raising revival, noting long Brazo history since 1870 and ties to A and M gates location.
Forrest Jones proclaims May 28 Poppy Day in Bryan urging citizens to wear veteran made American Legion poppies to honor the dead and support living veterans. Auxiliary volunteers will sell paper poppies on May 28 with funds for veterans welfare.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 o'clock from St Josephs Catholic church for Rosa Zulkowski aged 78. She died at the family farm in Goodson school community southwest of Bryan after a lingering illness. Rev J B Gleissner officiated at the church and graveside in Bryan Catholic cemetery. Surviving are one son Pete Zulkowski and five daughters Mrs William Bomanski Mrs Mary Karowski Mrs Watt Bomanski Mrs Anton Sadowski and Mrs Kiser Bomanski. She was born in Czecho Slovakia in 1854 and had lived in Brazos county over 50 years.
Jane Elliott of Bryan, a Baylor University junior, has been chosen secretary of the Alpha Omegas for the next term. Other officers include Oma Beth Kerr of Houston as president, Betty King of Waco as vice president, Floy Banks of Powell as treasurer, Maybell Rice of Waco as project treasurer, Elwyn Hatchett of Durant Ohio as alumni secretary, and Emma Frances Haney of Waco as reporter.
Plans are under way for Steep Hollow annual home coming on Sunday May 29. Former residents have been invited to arrive at 10 a m with baskets and stay for a picnic and community sing. C L Risinger is president and Mrs John Hicks is secretary of the Cemetery Association, aided by local leaders.
The Brazos county community mourns Superintendent D. J. McDonald who died of a heart attack at his farm near Kurten on Sunday afternoon. He led the county schools for eight years and would have served another term. A native of Mississippi, he came to Texas in 1874 and trained at Southwestern University and Vanderbilt. He also served as a Methodist minister assisting rural groups.
The Bryan Community Band plans a tentative schedule of concerts across Bryan and Brazos County towns in cooperation with the Trade Extension committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Henry Locke will direct the band with transportation provided and modest accommodations sought. The tour includes Normangee May 27 Hearne June 10 Iola June 24 Franklin July 8 Bedias June 22 Edge August 5 North Zulch August 19 Wheelock September 2 Snook September 16.
Judge W. C. Davis adjourned district court out of respect to D. J. McDonald and paid an eloquent tribute to him as a public official and citizen. The remarks stressed his long service to the youth of Brazos County over many years.
Mrs Lee J Rountree representative of the 26th District Texas Legislature addressed the Prospect Wixon consolidated school graduating class Friday night. She quoted Milton urging education to prepare for private and public service and to seek the way of honor and the will to work for men. Continued on Page 3
The first Brazos Federation of Women's Clubs flower show at Sue Haswell Memorial Park awarded top honors to various contestants. Roses went to Mrs. R. M. Sherwood first and third, Ward Mooring won Gladiolus, and Mrs. Law Henderson led Sweet Peas. Nasturtiums favored Mrs. F. W. Hensel, with multiple other prizes listed for annuals and arrangements.
Hy A Schovassa post commander of Earl Graham Post No 159 along with Anton Krenek and Joe Viola of Bryan transported Sam Piccolo to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Waco for treatment. The facility opened on May 9 as one of the newest best hospitals in the United States.
Funeral services were held at Wheelock Methodist church for Sallie Dunn Mitchell 52, widow of Marsh Mitchell. She died Sunday morning in Bryan after a long illness. Survived by brothers and sisters in Wheelock, she and her husband raised several foster children. One adopted son, Jim Wyse, living in Panama, sent flowers, unable to attend. Attendees from Teague Luling Dallas and others joined the service.
The city of Bryan purchased $5,000 Pavement and Improvement bonds Series No. 1 at ninety cents on the dollar. These bonds invest the English fund, a perpetual fund, with the first due in 1944. This is the second $5,000 lot bought this year at the same price.
Dr. F L Thomas of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station reports a slight rise in boll weevil emergence in early May bringing total to 6 92 percent. Flea hoppers hatching declined noticeably in the past week and no crecehoa net injury complaints to cotton have been received.
Bryan Lions Club held its annual officer election. Fred Hale elected president. R V Armstrong and W E Wimberley named first and second vice presidents. Madison Bell chosen third vice president. R C Franks re elected secretary treasurer. Two delegates to Dallas state convention named H C Ferguson and Madison Bell. Past Deputy District Governor H C Copenhaver attended with his son Bill.
Members of Earl Graham Post No 159 American Legion plan Bryan Bra zos county s biggest Fourth of July event with addresses by state candidates. James V Allred and J H Cyclone Davis have accepted to speak and others are expected to attend. Plans include barbecue speechmaking carnival auto giveaway and an evening dance.
A. B. McSwain of Rock Prairie learns of the death of his brother Charles M. Mc Swain aged 78 in Jasper county Mississippi on May 20 after a period of paralysis. He could not attend the funeral but had visited Brazos County recently.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce will file a formal protest with the State Railroad Commission against Greyhound Bus Company plan to discontinue the 10 07 a m and 9 23 p m buses. The directors tasked Secretary W R McCullough to file immediately. The group also set dates for Hood s and Green s Brigades survivors reunion in Bryan for June 10 11 or 13 14, with about 25 veterans expected. City officials will lead a city clean up campaign, with details to be announced. The Trade Extension committee announced Bryan Community Band summer concerts, starting with Normanane Friday at 8 30, urging Bryan residents to attend. Fire Prevention and Red Cross plans, cannery projects, and burglary protection proposals were discussed with no actions taken. Directors present included J S Caldwell J F Casey J N Dulane y W F Gelber Tyler Haswell J Webb Howell O S Johnson Ed S Martin Oak McKenzie W S Mitchell and D L Weddington led by Vice President Johnson in President Stanford s absence.
Work on the new city well progresses favorably with indications it will yield 200 to 250 gallons per minute. A pump will be installed in a few days and a test may be made late this week.
All Bryan Protestant churches unite for baccalaureate services Sunday at 11 a.m. Bishop H A Boaz of Houston preaches to Allen Academy graduates at First Methodist Church while Rev L A Wilson of St Andrew's addresses Bryan High at First Baptist Church. Boaz heads Houston Methodist district. sermon topic is “Good Citizens.”
