Funeral services for Mrs. Ora Brummette Swift of Bryan were held Monday at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal church on West 26th Street. She died Sunday at 5:35 a.m. at her Sterling avenue home after a lingering illness. Rev. L A Wilson and Rev. S Moylan Bird conducted the rites with Mrs. T K Lawrence at the organ as the vested choir sang the hymns.
The Brazos county grand jury reported twenty true bills with nineteen felonies and one misdemeanor. Indictments include two murder charges involving African Americans. Several defendants are at liberty or on light bonds. arrests and bond actions are pending. County Attorney Oak McKenzie will release names after arrest and arraignments before Judge W C Davis next week.
Will Henderson of Kurten learned of his sister Mrs. Nannie Lloyd death in Junta Colorado on May 12. Funeral services were held May 13. Mrs. Lloyd, born in Brazos county Kurten, moved to Colorado about 15 years ago and was known locally.
The Bryan Brazos County Chamber of Commerce Health Committee proposed a county clean-up week to work with city authorities. George A. Adams announced the plan, with a conference held with State Health Board official H. O. Wilson on sanitation and mosquito control. Four of five state board points were adopted including demonstration houses, sanitation, rural school health education, and disease reporting. publicity via truck exhibit and films was postponed due to weather. City officials including J. S. Caldwell pledged cooperation. A Greyhound service change was rejected pending further discussion with the City Development committee.
Brazos county flocks remain active after seven months of the 15th Texas National Egg Laying contest staged at College Station. The Golden Rule Poultry farm owns the high pen and high hen for Barred Rocks and the top Rhode Island Red monthly score, while Herndon Reds lead the Rhode Island Red class overall. W A Seidel White Leghorn pen leads the race by points, with George C England pen second in points but first by eggs.
About 500 people attended the Grimes County All Day Singing Convention Sunday at the Baptist Church in Martins Prairie. The gathering drew representatives from many counties as folk shared songs of praise and inspiration.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 4 PM for former county and city official Judge L D McGee at First Christian Church. Rev Arthur A Hyde led the rites with Rev J W Holsapple of Temple and family friends in attendance.
Brazos county farmers and farm women filled the Farmers Market space early Saturday with a broad display of vegetables and farm products. The crowd and crowded booths highlighted improved grading display and quality versus last year, prompting thoughts of expanding facilities or separating cooperative stalls from individual sellers. Transactions used tag-based receipts managed by Mrs. J. W. Hamilton, cashier and manager, with ten to twelve cooperative members’ products sold today.
The Brazos county Junior Garden Club, led by Mrs. Thomas Lundin, will participate in the county flower show at Sue Hasn't Memorial Park Friday and Saturday. Affiliated with the American Junior Garden Club, the group emphasizes a national program and aims to foster appreciation and effort among children.
In Fort Smith Arkansas a prisoner fined 36 by Municipal Judge James A Gallaher for drunkenness quips that he will bean it out with 36 days of good eating. The judge denies the offer and discharges the defendant.
Wade Cox’s car stolen from a Main street parking space Thursday afternoon was found Friday on Hearne road, stripped of its tires. Police are seeking two or three men seen entering the vehicle and driving it away.

W. S. Howell of Bryan, president of Brazos Mutual Insurance Company, was elected to the board of directors of the Texas Association of Mutual Life Insurance Officials at its Dallas meeting. All old officials were re-elected and five new members chosen. Senator Morris Sheppard was cited as backing federal action against birth and marriage insurance schemes.
Hon A S Ware was principal speaker at Providence school Saturday night and presented diplomas to Olga Hudetts and Gladys Lightsey from the seventh grade. Following the talk a program of readings music and song was given by the pupils before a crowded house.
County Agent C L Benson reports April activities including 30 farm visits 60 farmer office calls 50 phone calls 150 record books with letters to 4 H club members 16 meetings with 670 total attendance and cattle vaccination on three farms to curb black leg. Demonstrations total four with five men from College and Extension Service aiding travel of 1150 miles across twelve county communities. Cost to each farmer under one and a half cents per thousand dollars of taxable property.
Millican Farm Women’s Club discussed buying a pressure cooker and sealer for cooperative canning. Miss Blanche Brown demonstrated canning English peas at the meeting held at Mrs. Robert Fuqua’s home. The next gathering is May 24 at Mrs. Paul McSwain’s home and full attendance is urged.
Rev. Jno L Whorton pastor of First Baptist has accepted invites to deliver commencement sermons. He will preach at Eagle Lake High School on Sunday night May 22 and at Calvert High School on Sunday May 29.
W C Marshall explained to C H Winkler Chapter FFA at Texas A and M College how a one-variety cotton community would standardize seed and cotton type across a locale. The plan aims for uniform staple, higher lint per seed cotton, better quality and improved ginner service and cooperation.
Bryan Assembly No 129 and the American Legion Auxiliary plan Poppy Day on May 28 in Bryan and at A and M College. Rainbow members will wear red paper poppies and assist fund relief for World War I veterans and families. Mrs. M M Erskine leads. assistants include Mrs. Schulman and Mrs. Martinsen. publicity by Mrs. Schulman.
Attorney General ruling forwarded by L W Rogers to Otto Plagens states county superintendents and county boards may withhold per capita funds from districts not complying with the tuition law. It also says districts failing to certify pupils as beneficiaries may be dismissed from schools.
Six members of the Prospect Home Demonstration Club met at Mrs. Philip Trant’s home as Miss Blanche Brown led a canning demonstration of English peas snap beans and other vegetables. The next meeting will be May 27 at Mrs. J W Sylvester’s home with a program on dishes using tomato juice and tomato products.
City Manager R G Williams announced that recent water main extensions totaled 11 879 feet at a cost of 10 983 81 dollars, under a 16 000 dollar limit. Sections on College Avenue Northwest Northeast and a Baker Street line near the high school were completed with competitive bids and favorable labor rates.
The Brazos county district court docket includes eleven May grand jury cases set for trial this week by Judge W C Davis. Indictments yield two murder cases among the eleven, with further trials planned for the next five weeks. Also listed are burglary cattle theft hog theft assault and other charges against multiple defendants with dates through May 31.
L S Reed son of Sheriff J H Reed of Van Buren Ark was severely beaten by Jesse Stein a negro after responding to a call with Constable Horace Reed at a northwest city home. Reed suffered scalp wounds a broken nose and a badly bunged eye. Stein was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder.
Sylvester Stein and his brother were arrested after Jesse Stein attacked L. S. Reed, son of Sheriff J. H. Reed. Reed's condition is improving and a preliminary examination will be scheduled as soon as possible pending his recovery. Deputy Sheriff C L Baker aided in the arrest.
Miss Katherine Maxson led the Bryan Girl Scout banquet at the La Salle Hotel closing a year of local activities. Miss Maxson presided over the court of honor with Misses Julia Schovassa and Olene King aiding in Girl Scout work under the American Legion Auxiliary sponsorship.
