A. W. Kinnard Sr weighs whether health care is private enterprise or public duty. He recalls medical care as home based by mothers guiding families, honoring the mother figure behind Mother’s Day legacy, while noting industry shifts in a commercial society.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Looney Jr. return from Waco where they vacationed with Mrs. Looney’s parents Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Saunders. They are joined by Miss Ann Adine Held for a week’s visit. Miss Held formerly lived in Bryan. Mrs. Jack Howell and two children also return from Waco. Schlanky of Galveston attends funeral of friend Joe Groginsky today at 4 o’clock.
Judge W C Davis has accepted an invitation to deliver the graduating address at Millican public school Thursday evening May 24. The subject will be Things Worth While in Life.
Funeral services were held at Temple Freda for Joe Groginsky a Bryan businessman who died Monday night at Wilkerson Memorial Clinic after an emergency appendectomy. Rabbi Wolf Macht of Waco led the service and interment was in the Jewish City Cemetery. Groginsky a native of Russia born May 2 1865 came to America in youth and had been active in the community.
City manager R G Williams announced that the Municipal Utilities League will hold its annual convention in Bryan on June 18 and 19. Secretary T B Genner will visit Bryan soon to arrange details. The meeting will draw representatives from about 35 to 40 Texas municipalities and others interested in utilities operation.
Carlos G. Robles, uncle of six year old June Robles, denies rumors that kidnapers received ten thousand dollars in ransom before the girl was released from a desert confinement. The family had prepared to pay ten thousand if contact were made.
June Robles kidnapped April 25 was found alive in a desert hole 915 miles from Tucson. She was discovered Monday afternoon by Pima County Attorney Clarence Houston and Carlos Robles and described as quite ill. Continued on page 2.
The Steep Hollow Home Demonstration club met at the Steep Hollow church at 2 PM Friday to discuss county government. Mrs. John Hicks presided and Mrs. A. M. Harsfield read the minutes. members voted unanimously to hold a box supper at Sue Haswell Memorial Park on May 18.
Four rural schools in Brazos County shut down Thursday and Friday. Wixon hosted a Thursday night program led by teacher Miss Lola Rosner, while Stabler held a pupil picnic supervised by Miss Mildred Cloud. Rye closed Friday and Saturday noon for a school barbecue and a Saturday night dance with Texaco Ramblers, in attendance. Anton Zemorek led as principal with Miss Aggie Laskoski as assistant. Smetana closed Friday with Judge A S McSwain delivering the commencement address and Mrs W E Neeley presenting diplomas. Teachers at Smetana include FE J Watts principal and John Buchanan, B Lenderson, Ruby J Chessher, and Willie Crenshaw.
College Station May 14 The Agricultural Adjustment Administration says the Bankhead Act will be run by the same agencies that managed the cotton reduction program. County control associations will handle individual cotton allotments for the next year starting June 1. Texas may produce and sell 8,091,200 bales tax free with excess taxed at 50 percent of the average central market price, not below five cents per pound. The state quota is 10 million bales this year with allotments based on the 1928-32 five year average. Some counties will receive at least 90 percent of the state allotment. Tax exemption certificates will be issued for those with allotments, and noncontract signers may apply for similar certificates but receive no rental or parity payments.
The commencement exercises begin Sunday May 20 with the sermon at First Baptist Church by Rev. W. B. Breazeale of College Avenue Baptist. A special musical program is planned. Graduation will be held at the high school auditorium Friday night May 25.
The May term of district court opened Monday with Judge W C Davis presiding until Wednesday morning when court recessed after the death of his mother Mrs J G Davis of Shire in Houston. Grand jury led by Oak McKenzie convened. list includes Walter Armstrong foreman and others from Bryan, Shire, and surrounding areas. Bailiffs named for the term include J L Cobb door bailiff and riding officers Horace Reed C L Baker Ollie Orr Henry Koontz J L Hensarling H P Franklin Ross Bonano and Frank South. The number of cases slated for inquiry is reported smaller than usual and none are of major importance.
A Western Union worker in Dallas sends a dime to cover sodas he forgot to pay for after fueling and leaving. The station owner notes the gesture as proof there are still honest people despite skepticism.

Brazos County schools will close this week with Knob Prairie and Providence ending operations and three nine month schools remaining Millican Steele's Store and Harvey. Programs will be held on Friday and the district will finish with three operating institutions.
Jewel Lane, a Black man, was sentenced to two years for burglary in fall 1933 of a Negro house near Wellborn. Governor Miriam A. Ferguson granted him general parole.
Final adjustments on Bravos county cotton contracts completed on Friday. A total of 22 184 rented acres represent about 37 percent of planted cotton. Rental and parity payments will total about $150 000 with half cash rental this spring and half after land is checked. parity payment due in December.

The Brazos County Home Demonstration Council set final plans for a countywide box supper Friday at 8 p.m. at Sue Haswell Memorial Park. The event, hosted at Bryan city hall, will feature a Bryan Community band program, brief candidate talks, and box contributions from attendees.
Brazos County commissioners adopt a resolution to secure right of way for the old San Antonio Trail from Benchley to the Brazos River and form a regional committee to advance the project as part of Texas Centennial 1936 preparations. James Sullivan named chairman.
The Texas Highway Commission awarded several contracts including a 1.4 mile concrete pavement project on Highway 6 from College Station south, with Gaylord Construction of Houston low bidder at 79 605 dollars. The commission stated they have no funds beyond the original 24 million and no 8 200 000 grant exists, despite rumors.
A mob of about 500 striking longshoremen stormed a stockade housing 400 non-strikers in San Pedro California. Dick Parker was killed and about 20 people were seriously injured plus others hurt. John Knudsen and Glenn Rex were critically injured with gunshot and skull injuries as guards fired to disperse the riot.
Dr. Henry Harrison, delegate from the Brazos Robertson County Medical Association, will attend the State Medical Association meeting in San Antonio on May 14 15 and 16. As City Health Officer he will represent Bryan in the public health program and bring back to his own community the plans which the State Health Department are putting into effect throughout the state.
Judge W C Davis and his daughter Pauline attended the funeral for his mother Mars J G Davis, who died at the Kennard home in Houston. The service in Shire Baptist Church featured Rev Koonce and speakers Dr W H Andrew and Rev L Shaddik with prayers and hymns. Eight grandchildren served as pallbearers and Bryan area officials joined attendees.
Members of Groups 1 and 3 of the Methodist Missionary society invite the public to enter quilts old and new in a Friday and Saturday exhibition at the old Maniloff building on Main street. Prizes include prettiest quilt, best made quilt, ages 50 to 75, most historical, best appliqued quilt, best child’s quilt, prettiest unquilted quilt, handsomest bed spread, and best knitted afghan with amounts from 50 cents to 2 dollars. A judging committee has been named.
