A local column notes that since two state highway patrolmen were assigned to Bryan and College Station about 60 days ago there have been fewer serious accidents and no casual ties on highways. Dispatches from Austin suggest patrolmen aim to protect careful drivers rather than target reckless ones. Continued on page 3.
Saturday's market drew early visitors who noted greater volume and variety of vegetables and products, with high quality and careful preparation. The women's cooperative section began operating under full organization with plans for a year round market offering garden orchard and poultry products weekly.
Mrs. J. L. Brock of Bryan has been elected a sustaining member of the National Organization for Public Health Nursing for two years The nationwide ballot selected five sustaining members who advise national public health efforts The group meets annually in New York and Mrs. Brock plans to attend the upcoming fall meeting in the coming season.
Wayne Davis stands indicted for murder in the killing of his son-in-law Willie Lovell last January. The May 26 start date was set at the last term of court. Witnesses are to appear in district court or face a $100 fine as announced by Judge W. C. Davis. Attorney Lamar Bethea defends Davis. county attorney Oak McKen handles the prosecution.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce adopts resolutions opposing Army officer reductions and lower cadet pay at Texas A and M College and cuts to ROTC funding. Telegrams will be sent to Senators Sheppard and Connally and Reps Johnson and Patman urging action. The board notes these cuts would harm the College and opposes making military training optional. The Hood's Brigade reunion June 26 27 in Bryan is noted as a future event.
About 100 Knox county farmers filed for federal crop production loans, far below expectations as the final two days failed to generate the anticipated rush.
East Texas farms lure the unemployed back to work as houses regain life and gardens reappear. Managers note repaired roofs, new fences, and livestock as families on these farms pursue harvests of vegetables fruits milk eggs and pork under a new regime of press on.
The Steeles Store school held closing exercises for the primary and first six grades Friday night to a full house with eager applause. Graduation for seventh grade and high school will follow Friday night, June 3, with diplomas awarded to seventh graders and high school graduates.
Brazos County Federation committee led by Mrs. W. S. Howell met at the Sue Haswell Park auditorium to finalize plans for a two day flower show. The event, closing the federation year of work, is set for Friday and Saturday May 29 and 21 at the park.
The Brazos County Red Cross executive committee met Friday with Chairman Bethany presiding. April activities totaled 101 aid cases with 59 new and 42 carried over, plus seed distributions aiding 112 families (606 people). Lifesaving and swimming programs plan further training and new test cohorts at A and M College, country club pool, and the college pool after August 1.
Alumni and friends of Southwestern University plan a banquet Thursday night at the First Methodist church annex. Plates are 75 cents each and a robust supper is promised. A program is being prepared and will be announced later.
Joh Pace a farmer from the Little Brazos area displayed a 25 pound yellow catfish in Bryan today claiming he caught it with hook and line last night in the Little Brazos river.
Kerrville May 11 The rancher John Henderson of Honey Creek reports his 30 young turkeys being taken by a bullfrog that crept from the creek. He fired at the frog and killed it on the next appearance after missing the first shot.
A Millican Rhode Island Red owned by Mrs. J. C. McFerren produced a remarkable triple egg while hens in Brazos County are said to be working overtime to lift spirits in the drought hit agricultural area. The egg, found at the Eagle office, had an outer soft shell containing another egg in a hard shell and a third egg in a soft shell. The outer diameter exceeded three inches and the shells varied in texture.
American Legion Auxiliary members briefed on Poppy Day aims and school talks in Bryan and College. May 28 is set for the annual poppy sale with Mrs M M Erskine leading the rehabilitation committee. Decoration Day events and Girl Scout banquet planning were also discussed alongside a joint social hour with Earl Graham Post members.
The 46th annual State Fair of Texas in Dallas will run from October 8 through October 23. Otto Herold, both past and new president of the Exposition, announced the schedule.
The Bryan city commission will hold its regular monthly meeting Friday night. The Board of Equalization will be named to review tax renditions in preparation for the coming fiscal year tax roll. Other routine matters will also be discussed.
O W Sherrill praised the Dallas office for lending 3 500 000 dollars to farmers in three Southwestern states within 60 days at the lowest cost per capita in the nation. He spoke at Texas A and M College to 50 field inspectors and county agents, noting 8 834 loans averaging under 100 dollars each.
Brazos county delegates were elected to the state convention to be held in Houston on May 24. The county group endorsed John Nance Garner for the Democratic presidential nomination, supported the unit rule, and backed resolutions urging revenue only tariffs, wealth redistribution, and stronger anti trust enforcement.
Dr. Jessie Whitacre reported to Brazos County Health Committee that rural Texas children suffer diet deficiencies due to lack of foods like butter tomatoes and oranges leading to defective teeth. The meeting noted 214 Brazos County children have completed diphtheria immunization as part of ongoing public health work.
The May term civil docket fixed by Judge W C Davis outlines non jury weeks one and three for criminal cases. Week two lists May 16 and 17 with multiple civil suits and defendants. Weeks five and six in June include bank and insurance court actions and miscellaneous civil disputes.
Dr. F L Thomas of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station reports record high boll weevil emergence at College Station. He notes 6.42 percent emerged in March and April, with historical figures from 1925 to 1926 showing rising trends and new records.
City expenditures for ten months ending May 1 ran 79.5 percent of the general fund, with nine months at 72 percent and a last month gain of 8 percent. A 20 percent reserve was kept for uncollectible revenue, and for each dollar of estimated revenue only 80 cents was budgeted. The city is about $5,000 better off than a year ago, with $4,000 borrowed last year and about $1,000 in the general fund at month’s start.
Texas clubwomen plan a two day tour of the state prison system starting from Houston tonight. They will visit Central Prison Farm at Sugar Land with guidance from Lee Simmons, E. H. Astin, and Florence Floore. Participants include Mrs Lee J. Rountree of Bryan and district chairmen W D McFarlane Graham Ford Simpson Farda Bull Saylor and Jack Saylor.
Residents of Brazos county were drawn for petit jury service in district court for the second week. Names include R F Crenshaw, R J Halbrook, John Blaisenz, C H Warren, A D Kopecky, D A Phillips, T H Haltom, and many others.
Enrique Ramerez and Gauda Iloupe Hernandez of Robertson county filed notice of intention to marry with County Clerk Jess B. McGee on Saturday.
Cadets wore sweet peas and carnations on their uniforms as nearly thirty girls pinned the flowers before a chapel service led by Mrs. Lee J. Rountree. The event featured talks by Morris and Curtis, and awards and club elections as part of weekend activities at the college.
Judge W. Davis at the May term opening cautioned grand juries to avoid indictments lacking admissible evidence. He cited a recent court of criminal appeals ruling criticizing counties for bringing in numerous indictments without solid proof, which led to dismissals and weaker cases.
