A Bryan Booster column argues flea infested dogs should be dipped in county cattle dipping vats. Dr. C W Brown confirms no objection to dipping, noting fleas resist but repeated dips can curb infestation and spare dogs from constant scratching during hot summer days.
Mrs E H P Baine returns to her home in Waco after visiting Bryan at the home of Mr and Mrs E J Fountain. Her son Frank Baine a State University student has many Bryan friends and is noted for his good work. E W Helm VA representative from San Antonio visited Bryan to discuss hospitalization and benefits for World War veterans with the local Red Cross. Ei Edge made a business trip to Galveston today.
Squirrels of red, black and gray were plentiful Sunday as the opening day of the season drew praise from Nimrods. Shotguns and rifles echoed across the countryside with many bags reported and a large amount of squirrel stew and barbecue already eaten, hinting at more to come today.
Mrs. M. M. Erskine chairs the rehabilitation committee of the local American Legion Auxiliary and will lead the annual poppy sale. The event is tentatively set for Saturday May 28 with a quota of 3 000 poppies for Bryan and College this year.
The American Legion Brazos County Fair board met in Brazos County Chamber offices Friday night to appoint fair exhibit chairmen and form steering committees for county communities. Dr. D. H. Reid of Texas A&M Poultry Department added a $30 prize for the best two-breed exhibit by a 4-H member, with Barred Rocks Rhode Island Reds and White Leghorns eligible.
The semi annual Brazos County Singing Convention met Sunday in Kurten drawing many rural church singers from Brazos and nearby counties. Kurten hosted well and the crowd enjoyed a successful day. FE A Peters of Harvey, president, was absent due to illness. Officers for the coming year were elected.
F. D. Fuller of Texas A and M College, head of the feed control division, was chosen president of the South Central States Association of food feed drug and health officials at the close of a three day meeting in Birmingham Alabama.
Burglars broke into the Kurten post office on Wednesday night, loaded a 500 pound safe onto a truck, and fled toward the main highway. About 75 dollars in cash, stamps, and checks were taken. the ruined safe and papers were found by Sheriff J H Reed. Local and postal inspectors investigate. payments on stolen checks have been stopped.
Brazos county 4 H Club members led by County Agent C L Benson travel to Houston to attend the Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition. The group includes Morris Beal Sam Manning Elo Manning Lois McKalip Lottie Kre and Ima Fae Franklin. They praise fine animal and poultry exhibits and the event runs through the week.
The Bert Carroll store at Rock Prairie was entered Friday night by breaking a door. Some groceries were stolen. Constable Horace Reed investigated but found no clues to identify the burglar.
A Red Cross worker in Amarillo remarks on a geography error involving a Texas wheat shipment. A consignment bound for Longview was redirected to Amarillo, despite mills much closer to Longview, highlighting a misstep in routing.
Col C C Todd was elected governor of the Forty Seventh Rotary District without opposition at the Mineral Wells convention. Telegram from H H Williamson confirms the result just before press time.
The city has begun drilling a proposed new municipal well and has reached about 100 feet. Completion and operation are expected within ten days to two weeks if no untoward developments occur.
The many friends of John D Conlee regret to know of his continued illness at the family home 9821 East 21st Street. He has been confined to his home for weeks and is now unconscious and extremely weak with little hope for improvement. Mrs J D Conlee has been very ill but is somewhat improved today.
Funeral services were held for Joe Aricha at 3:30 p m at the John Moreal residence and at St Anthony’s church in Bryan. The 65 year old, born in Italy, died of bronchial pneumonia after influenza. Interment followed in the Catholic cemetery. Surviving are eight nieces and three nephews. McCulloch Dansby directed arrangements.
Leslie Moehlman and William Koc were arrested by Officer Cheatham on Sunday after being found in a home. Moehlman is under a suspended sentence from Judge W C Davis. They say entry was permitted and burglary is unlikely. a minor offense charge may be filed.
Dean Charles E. Friley of the Texas A and M College School of Arts and Sciences has accepted the Iowa State College Ames deanship in industrial science. He will assume the post Sept 1 after serving since 1924 as head of arts and sciences at Texas A and M.
Mrs. E. N. Way 35 died at a local hospital shortly before midnight Sunday from a pulmonary infarct with pneumonia complications after a picnic. She had served as nurse at Wilkerson Clinic since June and earlier as attending nurse for Drs. Wilkerson and Sid Perry. Survived by her husband and Miss Gladys Holden. Funeral held at First Baptist Church at 3:30 pm with burial in City Cemetery. Rev. Roy S. Holloman and Rev. J. J. Pipkin in charge.
Henry Herndon a local Rhode Island Red breeder found an egg two inches in diameter in his yard. Inside the egg was another egg of normal size still in its shell. This is the first report of such a freak egg in the area, though the phenomenon is not unknown.
Miss Blanche Brown home demonstration agent visits Kings Highway to meet with the Girls 4-H Club. She plans a meeting this morning and another session later today.
The Commerce building at 26th and Main streets is being remodeled by R. W. Howell for Fidelity Finance and Brazos Mutual Insurance. A modern banking room with plate glass windows will be installed and the building fitted for banking. Expected completion is within thirty days.
Early tick eradication data for Brazos County indicate a larger cattle and work stock population than expected. Reports from the first 15 days show widespread dipping in the opening phase, with the April dip record confirming a substantial cattle area despite fever tick concerns.
Charley E. Locke died after months of illness at his Tabor home in Brazos County. Born September 3, 1886, he served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, deacon, school trustee, Mason, and community leader. Funeral at 4 p.m. from the Tabor home with Cottonwood Baptist pastor Rev. R. L. Brown. burial at Old Bickham cemetery. Survived by widow Eula, daughter Eula Beth Locke Caldwell, father Fred W. Locke, two brothers, six sisters, and many relatives.
Goree Turner was arrested this afternoon by Constable Horace Reed for attempting to steal articles from John Collette's store. He was jailed and will be brought before Justice J. T. McGee next week.
Jess Hensarling of Bryan was elected president at a Kurten gathering of the Brazos Singing Convention on Sunday. He has served in the group for many years.
Pro gressive agriculture and livestock films will be shown in Brazos County rural communities this month to support the tick eradication campaign. The schedule runs May 9 to May 31 with free admission under the Live Stock Sanitary Commission of Texas and the U S Bureau of Animal Industry. Ed F Pickering will supervise. Farmers and families are urged to attend at locations including Rye Steep Hollow Reliance Bowman Woodville Knobs Prairie Harvey Minter Springs Steele's Store Smetana Prospect Fickey Kurten Tabor Edge Peach Creek Millican King's Highway Leonard Templemen and more.
A No 30 shoe, the largest ever made by Peters Shoe Company of St. Louis, is exhibited in the Groginsky Guarantee Shoe Store window. It was built for Robert Wadlow, 13 year old Boy Scout of Alton Illinois. He weighs 335 pounds and is expected to grow taller and heavier.
The Pin Money grocery run by W. R. Thomas and Martin's meat market run by Clif Martin were relocated today to the Woodyard building at 24th and Main, previously used by J. Groginsky and Son. Stock has been moved and arrangements will be finished tonight so both will open Wednesday morning.
Primary conventions will be held in each election precinct at 2 o clock on Saturday May 7 for Democratic voters to elect delegates to the county convention W S Higgs announces. Precinct chairmen preside with officers elected delegates named by precinct and totals listed for Millican Wellborn College Station Steele Store Harvey Kurten Tabor Edge Smetana Bryan areas Reliance Allen Farm and Bryan venues.
Slight changes in temperatures were noted last week with a high of 91 degrees on Tuesday and a low of 55 on Thursday. Rainfall totaled 1.7 inches for the week with temperatures varying day to day.
Dr R H Harrison Jr has been elected delegate from the Brazos Robertson County Medical Society to represent the group at the State Medical Association of Texas meeting in Waco May 4 5 6 and 7 Mrs Harrison will accompany him and they plan to leave Bryan on Thursday morning
The Bryan Brazos County Chamber of Commerce will hold its spring membership meeting May 24 at the LaSalle Hotel. Bishop C. S. Quin, Episcopal bishop of Texas, will be the principal speaker. Dinner arrangements are handled by the Finance and Membership committees.
