German Note Favours Continued U S Ties

Washington May 6 The official German note shows no material change from the unofficial report and strengthens belief that a diplomatic break may be avoided for now. President Wilson and his cabinet study the text and expect no break unless new violations of international law occur. US may reply brief to say relations remain intact if submarine orders are observed.

Verdun Battles Extend as German Forces Resume Offensive

London reports heavy fighting in the Verdun region with German divisions attacking Hill 304 near Avecourt and bombarding trenches. Paris notes the bombardment forced partial French trench evacuations while other German attempts were thwarted. Dublin adds that James M. Sullivan may be released from Dublin Castle and Major John McBride has been executed. Joseph Plunkett married shortly before his execution.

Mrs Alice Williams died at her New Waverly home at 5 yesterday afternoon. Remains will be shipped to this city for burial. Funeral from the residence of Mr and Mrs B W Buchanan tomorrow at 10 o'clock. She was born in Madison County, aged 63 years 7 months, and leaves many friends and relatives here.

Mexican Bandits Raid Texas Town

Nine American soldiers patrolling Glen Springs Texas were nearly wiped out in a raid by Villista bandits across the border. The town was looted and a boy killed with a civilian missing. The same band reportedly raided Boquillas and abducted a storekeeper named Deemers before crossing back. Four missing soldiers were later accounted for, leaving three dead and three wounded.
